Both of my dogs have plain black collars. I have 2 reflective collars I use on river trips courtesy of Smkie for them but for the most part they have the plain black collars. In fact Blue has had the same collar since he was a 5 week old puppy.

Am I missing a part of being a dog owner by not being fascinated by collars?

Mods, please move this to the appropriate area.

I think I'm there with you. Maybe it's because my dogs have long hair and you can't really see their collars well. I have the same collars for each dog which for the most part haven't changed since they were 7 months old with the exception of Misty who destroys collars and Willow who manages to get them smelling so bad it'd gag Oscar the Grouch.

With longer haired dogs if you can't see it then you aren't missing anything lol.

I like nice collars, as in nice quality even if you can't see them. But if you can see them its fun to have something nice and complementary to the dog. Once I do find a collar I like I don't tend to collect more, but thats just me.

So if your dog's collars make you happy... then you do 'get' it. Even if the happy is just because they are utilitarian and useful.

I'm not into collars the way some people are. I tend to find a collar I like, and keep that one on Caleb until another one comes along that I like (which is usually years). The exception is over the summer when he does a lot of swimming, or when we're at my sister's. Then I switch to his biothane one.

I like collars. But unfortunately, I have no money to spend on them, and Suzie has long fur. I made her a nice mar-tangle though, so she does have a pretty color, you just can't see it :p

Izzie's out in the public a lot being adored so i like to have her wearing something pretty, and fancy collars ARE pretty. Though i've slowed down a ton since we got her Paco Collar, nothing can really top it but there are times when another collar is more suited to the situation (like her christmas collar, different colours to match holidays like red for canada day, etc.)

I love collars of all colours and varieties. When I see a fabric I like, I make a new collar. If a fabric is on sale even, I'll make new collars. Having said that, my dogs have had their rolled leather collars since they were young and usually wear those or nothing at all so I just have a collection of collars lying around. So my fixation seems to lean more towards the act of making the collar as opposed to using it.

I have thought about it actually. I have collar decision to make and am torn.

I want them to have pretty collars and all , but really to spend more on a collar to get drooled on and eaten than i do a pair of shoes for myself and the 4 kids (hell it is cheaper for 5 pairs of tennis shoes from walmart than 1 "custom" collar form alot of collar places around) , i just cant do it.

Sheens collar is an old belt i cut down right now. when he gets finished growing then i will get both of them a new collar. and the only reason isabell will get a new one is that i feel guilty if i get sheen something and not her. lol

I do not spend alot on clothes , it is not necassary or even a good example to set for the kids. we are a large family and fugality counts.

I never even knew there was such a varity of collars until i got on various dog forums , now seems like everyone and there mom is making collars. maybe i should put the kids to work and underprice everyone else and make millions! lol

I think every person is different :) I have a collar obsession lol and get each dog a new one every few months, and at the end of the yr donate alot to our local rescue/shelters.

Having longer haired dogs makes it harder :( since you can't see the collar as much.

Not me. I don't get the obsession either. Xena is pretty enough without having to try to decorate her ;)

I don't what it is... I love shopping for collars. I keep Jackson short so you can see them really well and he always gets compliments on his collars. We are always in public together and doing different things, etc. I guess since I don't really have anything for myself to shop for, I enjoy buying things for my dog. I am not big on clothes and stuff, so don't spend a whole lot on stuff like that for myself, so I do my splurging on my dog. I guess kind of like some people shop for their kids... my godmother barely buys clothes for herself but she goes crazy on her 6 year old daughter!

*shrugs* I dunno, LOL. I couldn't really explain it to you. For the first year of Jackson's life, he just had two nylon collars from Petsmart. They were the very typical and he had one of the cheap tags from their machine. I don't think I really started shopping for collars a lot until I joined chaz, LOL! At night, if I am bored and there's nothing to watch on TV, I enjoy browsing different collars. Kind of like Mandy, since I got my Paco though, I haven't wanted to spend $$ on anything else because I love it so much.

I don't really "get" one dog having 50 different collars...but I also don't "get" why some people have 2000 dvds on the shelf, or a binder full of baseball cards, or 3 computers, or an extra car. I'm sure plenty of people don't "get" why I have 7 pairs of boots, or why I spend a lot of time fostering dogs, or why I have photographs and books everywhere.

It's just a hobby, something people like to collect, for a number of different reasons.

That said, I like collars, and I want my dogs to have nice collars, and I like the historical and artisan aspect of leatherwork. Also, I like the collars to sort of reflect the dog's personality a bit...especially working with bully breeds. If my pit bull has a collar with rocketships or flowers or peace signs on it, it looks way more approachable and friendly than a dog with a spiked collar or even a plain leather or nylon collar...and if I'm taking my dog to be an ambassador at some kind of community event, say, or to watch my friend's kid play soccer, I want to come across as non-threatening and friendly.

The same way putting a "tougher" collar on my dog to walk around a sketchy area at night might prevent people from approaching us.

Same thing I think some people are missing about dresses or apple technology
and same thing people think I'm missing about video games or sports

It's called PERSONAL TASTE. key word.. PERSONAL.
Some people like collars, some don't. Some like shoes, some don't.
Don't get it? Fine. but it doesn't mean people who do are frivolous or anything else IMO. They are simply choosing to spend their money on something they like where you would rather spend yours elsewhere.

Romeo has 2 collars I think. A paco collar and another cheap one for days at the beach. so I don't really "do" the whole collar thing
but I totally understand those who do. Collars are a cute and fun way to add a personal loving touch to your dog (not to mention the utility of many of these collars)

People buy 100000 outfits for their babies. Do you think baby cares? no. Do you think it matters? no. Do you think the baby is more/less cute with them? no.
People do it because it's fun and it's just one way of how they show their love to somebody they love.

For me it's finding something special for the grrrls. (Bimmer is a total guy and has enough "wild" in him that the rolled collar made out of great leather is just right for him and it doesn't bother him like a regular collar -- he always just took those off, lol, got Buffy to help him with the difficult buckles  )

Tallulah's collar is perfection for her (it should be, lol, it IS the Tallulah collar that was designed for her) and as snotty as I can be about leather, it is amazing.

I'm working on pieces for a collar for Kharma that will be one of a kind, and be HER, and before too much longer they'll each have the right tags. One of the reasons I started making them was because, frankly, I didn't see anything out there that was even remotely special enough for these three.

I don't really care about collars. Chloe has had the same collar since...forever. And before that, she just had a plain rolled leather collar.

But, she also has long hair so it is kind of pointless to get pretty collars for her. Although now that I've found a short cut I like on her, I do want to get her a pink spiked leather collar, just for the heck of it. I don't, however, have the $50 to spend to get her said collar.

I think if I had a short haired dog that looked good in wide leather collars, I'd be more prone to spending major bucks on the various nifty awesome leather collars...as it is, though, I could care less.

Rose only gets a new collar when hers gets gross because she's rolled on something nasty. Right now she doesn't even have a new collar - after her red martingale died I just put a cheap spare leather pink collar on her that I brought home used from work after it had been "abandoned" there for a few months.

Fran expressed my opinion already :)

I don't "get" why some people are obsessed with cars and car accessories. If my car starts and gets me from point A to point B, I'm fine.

I don't get how some people are obsessed with those little Hummel figures, or Precious Moments figures. IMO they are useless little dust collectors, but I have a friend and an Aunt who would argue differently. And guess what? They don't understand how some people like football, jewelry, and dogs! You know, some people like ME! But they love me anyhow, LOL

I liken it to the question of why women like shoes so much. I like collars, but right now collars for the dog are like shoes for me. I can't afford fancy, pretty ones. I spent a decent amount of money on a solid, sturdy collar for Eve and that's that, for now.

perfectly said since it is my thoughts too. yep. personal preference, not only in collars for ones dog, but for everything else in life ;)
