We had a very very scary moment with Ben this morning. My mother and I go walking at 5.30 every morning. Mainly to avoid the heat and cars.

We were leaving this morning and the dogs and us were standing on the pavement getting leashes on etc.
The next thing, a man with two off leash dogs, a Lab mix and a Ridgeback, came around the corner.
These two dogs spotted Ben and took off after him. :yikes:

There was no playful or mock intent in them either. They were out to kill him. He, very luckily, ran! My mother and I took off after the dogs yelling, my mother was getting her pepper spray out. Ben kept running in circles, evading the dogs, the Lab managed to grab a mouthful of hair but Ben ripped out.

My father heard the commotion and opened the side gate, Ben dashed inside and my fathers quick thinking kicked in and he planted his foot full force into the Labbies face. The dogs turned back and trotted off to their owner who just carried on his jog.

It scares me that I could very easily have lost my baby boy! Lesson learned, we will no longer get the dogs ready on the pavement. They will be leashed BEFORE we go outside. The thing is, we have NEVER encountered anyone out at that time of the morning.

I know where this man lives and I will be dropping by and speaking to him about his aggressive dogs being off leash.

How terrifying. Glad Ben is okay.

I was out walking Buster today and had these agro kelpies come out at me AGAIN (this is about the 4th time) I'm over it, they are getting a letter in their box tomorow, I knwo they have a fence, they just don't always keep their dogs in it, which I really don't understand.
I understand some people will always allow their dogs offleash, and so long as they are "under effective control" it doesn't worry me in the slightest. But nothing annoys me more then when people allow their badly behaved dogs to roam free.

It was very very scary.
It really is something us small dog owners have to be extra vigilant about. Our little guys can simply be ripped in two!

I cannot imagine letting my big dogs run free like that, even though they aren't prone to go after small dogs! That's . . . well, you know what it is.

I'm glad Ben's okay. Hopefully he won't have any long term fears from it.

OMG! I'm glad Ben is the resourceful type and was able to evade those dogs. I can't believe that guy didn't even try to get his dogs, just carried on like nothing was happening. Let us know how your talk with him goes.

OMG! How frightening. Poor Ben. Lucky Ben. That idiot! Those dogs will kill someone's dog some day. Yup....better carry a weapon of some kind next time.

My sister was walking with her daughter and granddaughter who was in a stroller and her Sheltie, Murphy on a leash along her road. All of a sudden an off leash Pitbull came charging up to them and Murphy took off, ripping the leash out of my sister's hands. That dog was on his tail but Murphy out-ran him. My sister said the dog was acting vicious and before Murphy ran, my sister tried to hit him because he was so close to the stroller. I'm not sure if he got hold of Murphy and then lost his grip or what. (didn't get the whole story) She really hurt her hand trying to fend him off. He wasn't at all trying to attack the humans, just trying to get Murphy. My sister and my niece were terrified. Finally, that dog gave up the chase I guess and Murphy came back. (I didn't get the total details of the end of the story.)

But yeah, that and your experience sounds just horrifying. Gosh! People can make me so mad!

I'm sure glad Ben got through it all right and hope he wasn't traumatized so much that it causes any problems with other dogs.

I know what you mean. I never had a problem with this one loose dog the first year we lived here and I would walk my two dogs every day. The following year suddenly for no reason at all the loose dog started charging us and there have been small confrontations. It isn't fair to me or my dogs, who I always leash, to have this dog suddenly turn on us and the owners do nothing but call the dog back every day, doing nothing about it. I have actually turned around so as to avoid the dog somedays. I shouldn't have to cut my walk or change my route because they chose not to be responsbile for their dog. Not to mention having to watch out for this dog when I'm driving. My husband is going to make a point to talk to these people. We are not the only ones who have to fear hitting the dog, other neighbors have mentioned it as a problem too. I would be interested in hearing how your talk goes. Please let us know.

I will do. He is not a particularly friendly man so I am hoping it will go ok.

I'm glad Ben got out of the way! It's a good thing paps are so fast and agile. I too have had a close call with a dane (though it was leashed, but not under control). Incidents like that are terrifying.

I kept thinking it was a good thing they didn't go for Lilly. There is no way she could have got out of the way with her stiff little legs and square body!
