So, I have no impulse control when it comes to puppies I really want. And just for the record, if anyone has puppy fever and thinks a temporary puppy will cure it, be prepared for it not to work. If anything, my temporary puppy just made me want my own puppy of my favourite breed to do with what I want lol.

One of these little girls will be joining my home this summer and I can't even tell you how excited I am. I haven't been this excited for a puppy in a long time. The wait to find out which one will be mine is killing me and it's only day three. I hope that one of the tri girls (one red tri and one black tri) will end up being the right one, but I am trying not to be colour blind. After all, I didn't want a "boring black puppy" when I got Journey and now black is my favourite haha.

AHHH!! These must be the puppies Fran mentioned, and holy crow I am SO happy for you. Not at all surprised, of course, because we all knew it was going to happen soon (with your puppy fever and how much you love Oracle <3). Super excited and definitely hoping you get another black tri, I love them so much more than reds. Though if you get a red puppy I'm sure we'll all be in love, too :)

I don't normally have puppy fever, but one of my co-workers recently got a Malinois puppy that is ridiculous. One of the most social and confident puppies I've ever met. They're doing my puppy class and I get to see him a couple days a week.

I don't want a Mal, and I don't want a puppy, but he is amazing. I want him.
fjal;dfjasfjsd;ljewj I want that puppy and all the adorable pictures are not helping. I am ready for my puppy now, someone please give me a puppy. I am really excited to be able to get a Malinois puppy in the future.

It's 101 Dalmatians Syndrome. I just know it.

Eh, to be fair though, I'm assuming Lauren's Facebook feed involves dog people who know what they're doing, and aren't getting the breed based on mainstream media appeal...

Yeah I just found a cattle x rat up for adoption in northern Texas. I kinda want.

EDIT: Yeah I have a lot of dog friends. I'm mostly blaming Sara, Karen, and Adrianne. :p

A lot of people think this... but honestly Mals are pretty popular right now I doubt everyone is going out to get a Mal after the movie. That's JMO though and hope they don't become more popular or end up in shelters/rescues after the movie. Not everyone needs a Mal or is a proper owner for one.

I want to see this movie though only because I saw it in a preview for a movie I saw in March and tbh I think it looks like a great movie. I like Mals but definitely not the dog for me.

I've seen the registration info on dalmatians and they didn't actually increase in popularity because of 101 Dalmatians. The spike was before the movie and was probably the reason they made the movie in the first place, and registration was already well on the decline by the time it came out.

I think a few people might get malis because of the movie, but I think their popularity (at least among sports people not involved in IPO) was on the increase well before this new movie or the Bin Laden raid.

registrations may or may not be a good indicator. when things are popular, it's not exactly the people doing it "right" that increase their production, a good portion are those just looking to cash in on the popularity. I'd venture a guess that a lot don't register anything, just produce puppies.

anyway, 10 years ago hardly anybody outside a working dog camp knew what a Mal was, now I can find them in rescues pretty easily. What do the numbers say? I have no idea, but my eyes tell me lots more people are interested in them these days and I haven't seen signs of it slowing yet.

Right, but I don't think it's related to the new movie coming out. I think the increase in popularity of mals started before the movie was even a thing.

ETA: Here's the dalmatian data: http://www.border-wars.com/2013/05/dont-blame-disney-for-dalmatians.html

One of my church friends has a mal. They wanted a GSD but thought the mal would be healthier because they didn't like the 'sloped back'. Thy kind of figured it was similar. Honestly the dog is not that bad and they do fine with him as just a pet. But I see more and more mals and dutchies at pet stores and parks. I do see a few at dog events but they seem to have grown in popularity even amongst pet folk.

If I go shepherd though I want a terv.

That's very interesting about the Dalmatians. I always have thought that movie was why they became popular, not the movie coming out because they were popular.

Not many people outside of "dog people" or law enforcement know what a malinois is around here. I usually just say shepherd or Belgian shepherd if people ask what he is to avoid going through the "A what? A what?" three or four times. ;)

I do encounter people in surprising places that know them, though. A couple of times former protection sports guys working at businesses where I had taken him to do some socialization work. And once just a random woman working in her yard asked me if he was a malinois, after we got to chatting it turned out she had a Terv.

I've seen very few belgians around here. I know a bunch of tervs, but only because most of a litter was in our show handling class and I see them at shows, and the owners of the parents show up in seminars and other classes from time to time. So I really just know one family of tervs. They are all super cute though and I want to steal them.

I saw a malinois in agility classes - he was in the advanced class that ran after us so I didn't get to see him work.

Otherwise I don't think people know what they are here, other than "those police dogs", and they might think they are just small and odd looking GSDs :p

Oh yeah, I didn't think you were being super serious about it, but I know people who are. I've heard malinois people online saying that their breed will go downhill after the movie about the military dog comes out and everybody wants one. Maybe true, maybe not. And I've heard it in my own breed two. A bunch of breeders didn't want that Animal Planet show "Too Cute" to follow around a litter of Welshies because they would spike in popularity and it would be so bad for the breed (which I think is silly - not that many people are going to watch that show and run out to buy every breed they feature).

I'm sure there is some small spike right after these types of movies come out, but I haven't seen the data that it's a multi-year spike that sends the breed spiraling downwards. Probably more correlation than causation I think

There are a couple of Mals where I live and I love every one of them. They all have great handlers are are just super badass dogs. I definitely want one down the line when I'm better at training and know more trainers in the area I can take classes with. I love that drive and energy- Hugo gets tired of working before I do.

Tons of tervs here in sports. But I basically only see tervs and groens in sports and mals at the dog park or petsmart. Kind of odd. I saw a dutchie at lure coursing (and many tervs). I'll probably have some form of Belgian someday. I enjoy them a lot.

Deacon is home. Chase is uncertain about the new addition, sort of likes him, but is kind of stressed when Deacon cries or barks. Chase is resource guarding his food, but if I put Deacon in the crate he cries which means Chase is worried about the puppy and not eating. So basically I have to hold Deacon so I can watch Chase eat as he will not eat if I'm not watching. But here is a pic, it sucks as I took it with my cell.

I picked my puppy! Introducing, Hazel, previously Crescent!

She is such a fun little puppy. She's bold, confident, fearless, and loves to rough house with the boys. She was about middle for handler focus. One pup was super duper handler focused and adorable and engaging, but she had some minor structural faults that made her not a good agility prospect. The other nice girl was so independent that she didn't even care we were in the room. Hazel/Crescent was interested in people and coming to us, and also happy to explore and climb on all of the things. There was actually another puppy I liked slightly more for temperament, because she was super handler focused and engaging, but she had some little structural issues that would make doing agility unwise. Whoever gets her is going to be very lucky!

As far as conformation, I think she's finishable but it's not going to be as easy as it was with Watson if I decide to pursue it. Structurally she and another female were pretty much on par, but the other puppy had more bone so most breeders would have picked her. But that other puppy was the super independent one, so not the pup for me! Hazel/Crescent has some little faults that will hurt her in the show ring, but nothing that should hinder a sports career. Please ignore her ridiculous tail in the stacked picture - I should have held it out straight but I was just happy she stopped wiggling and stood still so I didn't want to touch her and mess it up. lol

The temperaments in the litter were fantastic. Every single puppy was bold and confident and didn't show any concern with loud noises or other startling things. As far as future show prospects, one and maybe two of the boys were the best picks, but we're not sure anybody will show them. They will all make really nice pets with stable temperaments, though the three hooligan boys will definitely give their owners some some headaches and tooth marks! Haha
