We recently adopted two puppies-

they're papillion mixes (with what- I have NO clue), and they're about 16 weeks. We're working on house training. They had started crate-training at their foster home, and we're doing great with that! So- the question: We've been through more treats than I knew existed- meat? cheese? processed pork-chop looking treats? They do nothing for them. AT ALL. I got frustrated with my inability to satisfy them and opened a can of low-sodium sliced carrots. You'd have thought that I'd hung the moon. :lol-sign: They went nuts! I've been using them for a few days as potty treats, and to start encouraging them to use the doggy door. Neither one has had a reaction (yet), and they work. They're still small (about 5 lbs), and I smoosh a tiny bit of carrot and let them lick my fingers. Can you think of anything wrong with this?

*we adopted them both because we wanted them to have a playmate while we are at work- it's more work, but twice the love!*

Thanks in advance- you guys are great

Milo loves nothing more than a raw baby carrot for his after dinner treat. It's never caused him any problem, although his system doesn't really digest it the same way ours does. But, I've never detected that it does him any bad. People think it's hilarious to see the little dog chewing on a carrot. Especially my vegetarian boyfriend!

My vet recommended carrots as treats when Charlie needed to lose a few pounds. Charlie loves them.

i see no reason not to use them, my guys love carrots.

whenever i use stuff that's canned like that, even if it's "low-sodium" i prefer to rinse it. i'm not sure how much sodium a dog should get, but i'd rather not risk him getting too much.

Thanks for the replies! I'd much rather treat them with carrots than Beggin' Strips! Who knew that their high value, special treat could be a veggie? Malmo- I'm going to pick up some raw carrots this afternoon!

Aw, your little puppies are so cute! I've heard of giving raw baby carrots to dogs, but I'm not sure about canned. :)

Watch that they are chewing well when they eat raw carrots. The cooked ones will probably pass through the digestive tract easier... But, Milo loves to chomp and chew on things and he eats raw meat for meals. Carrots are just his special treat. Heh.

PS: The puppies ARE totally adorable.

Sure, carrots are great anytime. Cute puppies by the way.:D I wonder what type of cheese you were offering? I give mine mozerella, not the kind for pizza but the natural one in a ball that comes in a baggy with liquid, he loves it and goes to town for obeying just to get this. Stay away from commercial pork things.

I've had a couple dogs in my obedience classes that were treated using carrots...some because of food allergies (one was seriously allergic to MEAT) and the other just because his buddy was on carrots because of allergies.

hey, if it works, don't knock it!

My dogs love carrots but sometimes the Chihuahuas get a little indigeestion. They really should be grated. Dogs have a shorter digestive tract and aren't really that well designed to metabolize hard, crunchy veggies. Apparently, they don't get much nutrition out of them if they're whole. If they're slightly cooked and smooshy, like you described, it's probably better than a whole carrot.

Lyric, my Dobe is on a special liver friendly diet which I got from a nutritionist and raw carrots are part of it, but they're grated up....almost liquified in the food processor.

But if your little guys aren't having any diarrhea or anything, carrots are a good treat. I also use tiny pieces of chicken breast or mozerella cheese. There are lots of neat homemade treat recipies. I think there's a thread somewhere about that. Or you can look online too.

Your babies are adorable.....really super cute. Hope to see more pictures.

My dogs LOVE carrots. They were especially a blessing when Maisey was teething. Nothing like a big cold carrot to chew on.

Aww...

Thanks, guys- I think they're adorable, too! They really are doing well. We're working on "Sit" and they are starting puppy training classes on the 13th. Hopefully they'll be ahead of the curve!

Here's a few pics to keep you guys satisfied-

Yeah cute pupies!!

And for the carrots, I find wierd that some dogs like them  , the dogs I had hated them, mostly Oso.

If you gave them one in his bowl he compleatly ignore it.

I often feed veg in with my lots dinner most skirt around it unless mashed a bit but one of mine will leave everything else, meat, fish, cheese whatever just to get to the carrots or whatever veg I put in. Im sure she'd turn veggie if she could :lol-sign:

My zoi will eat carrots but you can tell he hates it - just so no one else will get it :lol-sign:
