LOL, I think it's more likely that there's a lack of interest in seeing Canadian channels so they don't really try to provide them. We also study a lot of American history, etc, in the education system here, and I don't know if that's true of American students.

I can honestly say we didn't have Canadian Geography in school.

See, I don't get that. We're your neighbour and ally. We studied world geography in school which included the states, European countries, Africa... my favourite chapter was Brazil. I've always wanted to go there since we studied it in ... grade 8? lol

Granted it was almost 10 years ago, but as far as I remember there was no real "Canadian Geography". We studied Africa, South America, Europe, etc. I just don't remember Canada. Never really thought about it.

I don't remember who posted it, but not everyone thinks Canadians live in Igloos or ride sleds to work. IMO that's just stupid. Yes, there are some morons in the U.S. but I'm pretty sure there are some in Canada as well. You might not know any personally, but their out there. They always are.
I could see someone asking if you ride a sled and you live in Alaska, because there are some natives there that still do. But Canada, that's stupid.

It's been said before and it'll be said again. Each country has it's pluses and minuses. You can't judge another country by what a few ignorant people say. You have to see more of the country, more people, places, government issues, etc. What we are doing here, simply going back and forth about what WE think is good or bad, doesn't mean anything. It takes more than a few people on a forum to get an accurate, not so personal view of a country (or countries).

I don't get that either, Saje. I think in some respects the US just very much takes Canada for granted, kwim? And when we actually stand up and don't agree to go along with something they are proposing I think they sorta go "eh?" and it shocks them, LOL.

I want to go to Chile, LOL!

I said that. And it really did happen to me! Of course I know not all Americans think that, but I find it funny that even a few of them do.

I think, though, that fallacies about Canada ARE more common in the USA because you don't study us in school, or see our television news, or read our papers. How can one know that Canadians don't live in igloos or ride sleds if you don't know anything about Canada?

I've met many American who are quite informed about Canada, and who have been here. But I've also met some who really, really don't know, and honestly who don't seem to care to know. There is a tendency, I think, among some Americans (and I am clearly not saying all, but some) to be rather country-centric and not care much about what is happening in countries other than the USA. And honestly, I think that is to their detriment.

Well no offense to anyone, but knowing a lot about a city is not the most important thing in life. I will admit, people who mix up such simple things do make themselves look like idiots...to those of us who have lived there for a while and know a lot about the place. But it's not a big deal. Americans are not complete idiots, and Canadians are not better than Americans.

Check out the site Saje posted. It tells you that Canada goes back as far as possible in regards to felony, theft, DUI's, etc. If you have any of them in your record you aren't allowed into Canada without a "rehab" program.
Actually, being a legal immigrant in the US I also know that they also have the same rule. Even if I break the law while I'm a legal resident, regardless of the act, and found guilty and it goes on my permanent record I have a good chance of being deported out of the country.

I love both countries, well in the areas I've lived, and can understand why Canadians can get touchy about certain remarks that some US citizens have against their country. Canada is a distinct and unique beautiful country with proud citizens with diverse cultures, and for the longest time they've felt like most Americans, not all but lots, would consider Canada as though it was their 51s state. At the same time I've also seen how Americans are treated like "big mouth know it all" by some Canadians, I realized it even more so now that I live in the states. I don't have too look far to see it, my Canadian relatives are the worst. :D

Chile was interesting. I think it's a lot like Canada in that it a fairly young country living to a big and (formerly) powerful neighbour (Argentina). They have a hard time identifying what it means to be "Chilean" or what Chilean food is lol. At the moment it's got the best economy in S. America. so things aren't as cheap as Peru, Bolivia... but at the same time you get all the ammenities. They get quite annoyed when American's go there and treat them like they are a third world, under-educated country. It's not like North America but why should it be? People there go to university and work hard. There are a lot of engineers. Or maybe that's just because I worked at an institute where they train mostly engineers and math people lol here: http://www.ipvg.cl/

Hmm, my dh the engineer, LOL, was offered a job on Chile at one point. We decided not to go due to some personal reasons (ill health in my elderly parents) but perhaps we'll end up there some day. I know a few Chileans now living in Canada, and they are wonderful people!

I don't think anyone has said that. I think what has been pointed out is that your average Canadian just knows more about America than your average American knows about Canada. There are reasons for that, but I think it is probably quite true.

What's really sad is when you live in a state your whole life and you don't even know the capital! That, IMO, is worse than not knowing about Canada.

I'm sorry, I just don't see how anyone could think that Canadians ride in sleds or live in Igloos. Even only visiting 2 provinces and knowing about the border and NOT studying Canada in school...I've never thought that. Geez, some Americans are REALLY giving us a bad name.

I wonder if the Amish know how Canada is? I mean, they are surprised by how we live and what we do. Do they study Canada? Would they know you don't live in Igloos? Amish are Americans to, but they haven't been sucked into the society like the rest of us have been.
LOL, now I'm curious.

Good question, about the Amish. I'm sure if they don't know much about the USA they probably know (and care) less about Canada, LOL. We actually have a comparison to the Amish here (in Western Canada), a group known as the Hutterites. They've embraced technology a little more than the Amish (they drive, for instance) but are still a rural, agriculture-based religious sect.

As for the Americans giving others Americans a bad name - well, really, they just don't know. Maybe they should, and maybe they should be trying to learn, but they honestly don't know.

Funny story, some friends were driving from Canada to Texas, and since it was winter in Canada they still had the electrical cord from their block heater hanging out their hood. They were stopped by a state trooper/officer who asked them if their car was one of those electric ones, LOL!

We have Amish people in Canada too! :) They come into my town all the time with their horse and carrige. The Canadian Amish people of course would know but American Amish, hmm, I wouldn't say that they DON'T know, but I would be curious as to how they found out. lol

Very true, and I think they are in Ontario, with very small numbers in their group. I would imagine the closest Western Canadian comparison is the Hutterites, as I mentioned above.:)
