Lizzybeth, oh, that is like a double edged sword! My 4 1/2 yr old has been begging me for a chihuahua of her very own. She said "if I am good for 3 days can I get a chihuahua?" Ha, as if.

Boxers, definitely. Juno's whole butt starts wiggling when she sees kids. And she loves hanging out with my mom's daycare--maybe because they're prone to drop food for her lol but wherever they are, that's where she wants to be. Plus she is tolerant of anything they may do to her.

I dont think is normal for chis. but romeo absolutely LOVES kids.

maybe its because they are like more.. his size? lol I dunno. or most likely because hes noticed that children are more willing to share snacks

Wile E. (my chihuahua nephew) LOVES kids for the reason they're more his size. He goes nuts when he sees kids and just wants to play and love on them.

the rott isn't considered a bully breed (mostly because it isn't directly realted) but it's original function was as a bulldog (not a drover although they can be trained to do it just as some ABs & APBTs have). in fact the proper german name was rottweiler metzgerhund, metzger is german for butcher. like every other butcher's dog it was expected to catch & hold large unruly animals like bulls & hogs. like all bulldogs a good one is actually very easy handling & likes people when not working & when working is focused & hard. a good rottie should be 100% functionally interchangeable w/a good AB.

PS. the B&T color throws people off, if you see a solid red one (same color as a fawn bullmastiff) they look more like a bulldog than people realize.

Golden Retrievers, they're the only breed that I've personally experienced enjoying children (but then, I don't have a ton of experience so there're probably others :p)

I know Labs are the stereotype now for family friendly, and Enzo definitely ADORES children, so I can't dispute that one, but Ozzy loves little little kids as well. Hes a JRT/Aussie mix, and while Enzo loves everyone she meets with equal abandon/enthusiasm, Oz really only butt wiggles for little kids. Kids that are screamers though, not so much.

Boxers, Pits, Boxers, Boxers....lol

My 8 mo. old is the ruler of the three monsters in our house, they let her get away with murder! Halo tries to feed her and clean her, harry is her BEST buddy, and loki is her great protector...

The breed is noted as wonderful with kids, often stoic when being "abused" by them!
LOL

Pitties IMO are some of the greatest "babysitters" as well. Of course all dogs well socialized and such...not just some random dog you see on the street..lol

Pops, thanks for that info on rottweilers, I had no idea and that is so interesting! They were my dream dog when I was little, my aunt had one named Bear and he was the neatest dog. I think finding out about the origin of breeds is so fascinating.

Thanks for all your answers!!!

Berners have an affinity for children that is pretty much only surpassed by the Newfie. Bodi will seek out children at the park, at our Summer BBQ's, doing his Therapy Dog work at children's hospitals, anywhere - he will roll over on his back and wait (tail wagging) for belly rubs from as many kids that can lay on him.

Our collie mix ADORES children. He loves to play with them all the time and his whole body wiggles with tail. Our lurcher doesn't like children at all. She just walks off when they arrive.

All I know is that my APBTs are downright gluttons for punishment. For instance, working with kids that have never been around dogs is a job....teaching them how to properly pet a dog, etc. But my dogs could care less if the kid trips and falls and then kicks 'em in the head. They love to be around kids and will just sit there and enjoy the bad with the good.

My other breeds, on the other hand, have the sense to make themselves scarce if they want to.

My Shih Tzu adores children. I never knew children until I had my own and her breeder was an old lady, but she always adored every child we met at the park or store or anywhere

Both my chi mixes like children

My pit bull ADORES them and I know for a fact she was not exposed to them until she was about a year old.

My cavalier king charles spaniel simply loves children, must be natural to him as I personally do not really like kids and will not stay long in their company so he has never been properly socialized to them. Doesn't matter though, he loves everyone and especially children of all ages regardless if he's seen them before or not.

Fozzie is the BEST, most bomb-proof kid's dog that I know. He will let any child do anything to him without even flinching. Not only that, but he's very gentle with them... he never gets too excited or jumps on kids. Plenty of dogs love children but still aren't safe around them - I think that makes a big difference.

Fozzie was around my neices and my little brother growing up, but I didn't necessarily seek out children for him to meet. I think his breeding/temperament has lots & lots to do with it! On the other hand, I have seeked out countless kids to desensitize/socilaize Gonzo with him, and he's still nervous around some children.

Huskies are usually REALLY good with kids, and so are well bred, properly raised Cardigans in my experience. :) So he has that going for him.

Good posts !! Do you think that the ones who seek out kids were visited a lot as pups ?
