I used to say I wasn't a hound person, then I got Maisy
Then I used to say I wasn't a northern breed person, and I got Squash
Then I used to say I wasn't a herder person, and I got Toast

I'm still pretty sure I'm not a terrier person, though god only knows at this rate.
I can loan you Hank. :p

Anything that has a curly coat. I can't stand it. I can't stand super super tight curly hair on people either, I don't know why it makes me uncomfortable. That being said when poodles are cut down really really short until they don't look curly, I'm ok with.

Anything that has a continuously growing coat. I don't like the feel of it and it bothers me too.

Anything with a wire coat. Don't like the texture.

Anything that has very short legs. I would consider a Corgi potentially but mostly super stubby legs to me is just kind of wrong. The way they run and the motion to me is off and I worry about back injuries, especially when they try to jump.

I love most dogs but ones I don't feel like I can own: Chihuahuas (my aunt has one, he's the clingiest dog ever and it's annoying; Shih Tzus, panting, hair, short legs, Shibas and any other very independent dogs. I would much rather have a love everyone and loves to interact dog than a dog that blows me off.

Other than that, I try to stay away from breeds that are known for dog reactivity and aggression. I don't want to deal with crate and rotate.

Whatever breeds are left, I could likely be persuaded to own, although I do have breeds I'm more inclined towards.

Pretty much anything that is not a herder, lol.
Basically this.

Though, they are a few dogs outside of herders I enjoy, & have considered-Goldens, Springer Spainel, & few more sporters, Sighthounds, & Papillons.

Breeds that aren't my cup of tea:
• Husky-Beautiful dogs, but temperament-wise, they just aren't for me. There was a time where I really considered owning one, due to looks, but I admire them from afar.
• Nordic Breeds. (Besides Samoyed.)
• Bulldog-Health Problems
• American Pit Bull Terrier- Dog Aggression
• Pekingese- No, just... No.
• Maltese
• Bloodhound,& many other Scenthounds
• Doodles, but I do poodles.

EDIT:

I don't know if you are often trying to be funny in your posts regarding him or what, but your disdain for your dog kind of disgusts me.
Agreed.

Seriously, Are you just kidding around? Or not?

(Please tell your joking. Please.)

To be honest, I have a hard time liking a lot of dogs that aren't mine or my friends'. Sounds weird as I am definitely a dog person and love dogs.
I was going to post something similar, but couldn't figure out how to word it that didn't make me sound awful. I've said (to people who get it) that I'm not so much a dog person, it's just that I love MY dogs. But that isn't exactly it, because I have other dogs I completely adore. And dogs fascinate me and I love learning about them and being a geek about them and reading about everyone's dogs here and on Facebook.

But I don't fall all over every dog I meet. Mostly I'd like other dogs to leave me alone unless I initiate contact. There was some stupid "how much of a dog person are you" quiz on Facebook a while ago, and a lot of the people were posting "Oh my god, of course I got 100% how could anyone not?!" and I got like 83%. Because I didn't answer questions like "what do you do when you see a dog tied outside a store?" with 'go over and love on it'.

I had three terriers and vowed to never get a terrier again. Ever.

Then Crossbone happened who is most likely part terrier and he's BestDogEver. He convinced me that going full terrier was a good idea...I'll check back in in a couple years :p

I like athletic, small, crazy dogs. I can see myself with only Rat Terriers or rescued Feist/terrier mixes. Still would love a 25lb herder..

chihauahuas
I am not a lapdog person, and I live in a climate where it regularly drops below freezing.
I want to say that you would never catch me owning a chihuahua. They're small, they're usually mouthy (vocal), they're just not really what I would even look for in a dog....
I've never met a chihuahua I'd live with. They've all either been outright aggressive or they're too pokey and licky and clingy. I also don't like their voices.
Chihuahuas are just too small. I'd worry about stepping on it.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

It's compensation for the fact that I hold the same opinion on chihuahuas as many other people here, yet feel compelled to furnish mine with a heated bed on the couch and a wardrobe larger than my husband's, brush his teeth daily, pander to his insanely picky palate, and let him sleep nestled against me under the covers every night. Consider it cognitive dissonance, part of me is perpetually looking on in horror as I become one of those lapdog owners. The rest of me is busy painting his toenails.

I didn't plan on owning a chihuahua. I didn't plan on owning the world's most spoildest pursedog. First I tried treating him like an actual dog, which resulted in him dropping weight to the point of looking skeletal while emitting a continuous high-pitched whining noise for weeks on end. This is where we ended up. I did agility foundation classes with him. I did obedience classes with him. I seriously considered trying flyball with him. He's just utterly unmotivated by things other than heat, and is really only good for sitting on my lap. He's a kickass lapdog.

He's fun to dress up, and his primary duty is to follow me around and make it look like I'm totally not talking to myself. To me that makes him quite a lot like a stuffed animal.

I grew up with mini schnauzers and thought "terriers, meh". Ok, but not my type. But then I made a friend who is a die hard JRT person and her dogs are awesome. I'm not crazy about the little size or wirey coat, but man they are just awesome little dogs.

Also the noise that comes out of mini schnauzers is a deal breaker.
This. I shudder every time the rescue I volunteer at gets a mini schnauzer, because basically all of them that have ever come in have emitted some terrible noise or another. And one of the owners of the shelter is obsessed with them, so she tries to bring as many up from California as possible. :yikes:

We had 4 over the years and while none of them ever made crazy noises, the barking was just awful. So. Much. Barking.

The barking is terrible, but the ones I have encountered at the rescue make this god-awful shrieking sound. Whenever we bring one to an adoption event at Petsmart, they do it frequently and people always end up coming over to our table because they think it is a) a dog in pain, b) a baby shrieking and in pain, or c) a large dog fight.

It's pretty bad.

Watson has an "OMG IM SO EXCITED!" shriek that is way worse than any single noise the schnauzers ever made. But overall they made way more noise than he ever has. Glad I never heard schnauzer screaming!

He first time his breeder heard Watson shriek as an adult she looked horrified and said "Did I breed that?!" Haha

I don't think I can really say that _____ breed is not my thing. I really believe it's all individual dogs. I've met wonderful dogs of all types, and not so wonderful of the same. I thought I would NEVER EVER own a Lab, yet fell in LOVE with one of the search dogs at work and would have taken him in a heartbeat if I wanted to live the SAR handler life that he deserves to live. Same with Dachshunds. There is one that I train who is AWESOME. Seriously. Going to make a great agility dog if his people decide to pursue it. Just a couple of examples :p

The only thing I can say for certain is that the breeds that largely appeal to me are Spitz breeds. I anticipate those breeds being the only ones I actively go looking to own.

I don't think I'd rule out any breed entirely. I have definite preferences, but I can live with a pretty wide range of temperaments. As long as they don't want to eat Lola we're pretty good.
