I doubt if you'll ever find the original breeder .... and you may not want to . Just love your pup and move on .
I agree, just love and take care of this puppy the best you can. This puppy was lucky to get you. Yes the PMer profited from you inexperience but that is water under the bridge....the puppy is the here and now.

Good luck.

It's almost guaranteed that your puppy came from a puppy mill...about 90-95% of puppies in pet stores are products of such large-scale breeding operations. Please don't beat yourself up...you now know what you didn't know then, and quite frankly, you'll probably never know your pup's exact lines, parentage, etc., because chances are, the miller doesn't know either.

What I am curious about, however, is the health guarantee or warrantee provided to you by the pet store. Most of these "guarantees" that pet shops offer are completely bogus, and do NOTHING to protect you in the event your pup has a hidden genetic issue or health problem that's yet to surface...it is MANY a pet store pup's owner, who has purchased an $800-$1200 puppy, only to have it turn into a $6000 puppy, once all of the health issues have been addressed...this is also another testament to puppy mills, and the complete absence of veterinary care, or pre-breeding health screenings in these places. Very sad.

We all want you to love and enjoy the heck out of your new puppy, irregardless of where he came from, because he, like every dog, deserves a loving home. But if you do decide on another dog or pet in the future, I'd encourage you to adopt. Not only will you be saving a life, but adoption decreases the whole "supply and demand" concept that keeps the puppy mills running.

The pet store here will tell you that their dogs come from good breeders. When you ask for names, they wont give you any. Their dogs actually come from a FLEA MARKET. yes, these people go to a local flea market that is known for selling sick, way too young dogs (4 weeks and less), they buy them for $25, take them back to the store, bathe them, put a cute ribbon on them and charge $800+

I am glad that you found a dog you like, but I hope next time you will consider adoption or buying from a good breeder :)

its absolutely despicable...the conditions these pups must come from...:( .. im getting such an education... i never how extreme and how prevalent these conditions are...
to consider ALL puppies sold in ALL petshops sold ACROSS the board come from these backgrounds ??? mindblowing and repulsive...
im in total puppy love with my new pup BUT jeeeez she will eat her own poop and poop in her own bed (if i let her)!!! it grosses me out but imagine the conditions she came from..
where are the regulations?? ..... i always considered dog breeding to have high standards and a reputable business... (and i know there are tons upon tons of breeders that are) but this other seedy side is very disturbing..

It's a sad fact that the majority (yes majority) of breeders are disreputable. It can be difficult (but rewarding and worth the time) to find a good, reputable one...which is most likely why most people don't bother. :(

I would also like to point out that a large number of puppymills and backyard breeders (byb = small scale irresponsible breeder) are actually very clean places who give the animals the minimum care needed by law. However, clean or not these are NOT good places and should, of course, be stopped.
But that's unlikely to happen since people keep buying from them (and celebs love to gloat about the fact that they buy from mills, thereby making it seem "ok" to do so ).

I'm so glad your pup found a great home, with such a responsible person. The best thing you can do for your pup is educate others about puppymills and byb. Backyard breeders can actually fool a lot of people because they can be really nice people with nice clean homes who seem to (and sometimes DO) love their dogs. They're just uneducated themselves or hungry for money...and so no thought is put into the dogs welfare or breeding in general.

Sorry, I'm rabbiting on. LOL I'll stop now. By the way...are we going to see pictures of your new furbaby? Cairns are such adorable little terrors...errr...I mean Terriers. ;)

Yes it's a sad fact that pet store pups come from puppy mills. I'm a breeder myself and I would never ever consider putting one of my puppies in a situation where I know for sure it could end up in unknown hands. Reputable dog breeders choose puppy owners --- if not you, it could have been an abusive person or another puppy miller themselves that bought your cairn pup -- and that is why caring breeders choose their own homes. Your pup is lucky to have found a good owner but I'm sure many pups are not so lucky.

I'm happy to hear that your pup found a great home :)

I didn't know about puppy mills either, until after I bought my first dog. He came from a horrible backyard breeder (possibly a puppy broker). He lived in a rubbermaid tub full of cedar shavings, and was filthy when I bought him. You'll be happy to hear that he was very trainable... perfectly potty trained by the time he was 4'ish months old.

Sadly, many people do not know about puppy mills. Just educate everyone you know, and buy from a reputable breeder from now on.

Good luck with your puppy. I'd love to see pics :D

Btw, If I bought a puppy from a petstore, I would also want to know where he came from. Not to "spark a connection," but just out of curiosity.

Too true. :)

Casey, I am so glad you've done the right thing by spaying her and doing your research. If all people were like you there wouldn't be a litter of byb Cairn puppies next door, whose mother was ALSO a puppymill puppy. :( I just.. I can't even put it into words for you.. how happy I am... the little things like this are so important.
