i love my new pup...a cairn terrier i got from a local puppy store....i went in 'green' in regard to puppy mills... the owner mentioned how they dont get their dogs from puppy mills though..
well...i dont regret getting her for a single minute but she does have dirty dog syndrome...has no problem wallowing in her mess in her crate...realizing she may in fact have been a puppy mill pup after all...
just out of curiosity i'd like to look up her breeder...i have her name and town and a id number (fed id# ?? )
any way i can get further info on a breeder?

Did you really think that any store is going to say yep, we get our puppies from puppy mills? Come on!

What is the point of looking for her breeder? Doesn't it speak volumes that the breeder cared so little about the puppy that s/he has no idea who bought it, where it went or what was going to happen to it? That's really the bottom line on breeders that sell through pet stores. S/he didn't know what was going to happen to it and s/he didn't care. So, what do you think you're now going to find? The health testing that was done? Ya, right. The extensive pedigree of champions? Ya, right. Temperament testing? Ya, right.

The "id number" is probably the USDA license number of the breeder, yet another major indication of puppy milling.

Love your dog, realize that buying from any pet store is a HUGE mistake, spay/neuter the puppy and forget about some farfetched notion of finding a breeder and making a connection.

I would have a Luvs moment. "Live and learn and then just Luv/get Luvs", which in this case will be a metaphor for the housebreaking you've got ahead of you, lol!

I've got a Cairn in my puppy class right now; once she gets the edge ran off, she's a joy to work with. Very smart and quick to pick things up, but a holy terror before hand. ;)

^I think that was harsh.

She's just curious, not trying to make some 'connection' with her breeder.

I would want to know too.

I doubt if you'll ever find the original breeder .... and you may not want to . Just love your pup and move on .

I agree with grammy. Certain things are better left unknown. You'll probably find a puppy mill, and then what will you do?

If you called her, it's very unlikely she'd remember the specific puppy or dog. She probably couldn't tell you even when dogs produced it. :(

Even if you did call her, it is likely she'd probably lie to you (just as the pet store did). No one would want to admit that they run a puppy mill, and certainly not to someone who's just purchased a dog that came from their breeding facility.

Just enjoy your pet for what it is, and remember to spay or neuter as soon as possible. :)

thanks tucker...i agree, maryanddobe's reply is harsh :(
i never said i wanted to make a 'connection' with the breeder...and fyi, i didnt ask the petshop owner ..he offered me the info ... stating the pup came from a reputable breeder...not a mill...shes my first dog...I never even heard of a puppy mill!
honestly i didnt ask him because the kids and i fell in love with her immediately....she was coming home with us...
my only reason for checking the background of this 'breeder' was to nail the petshop owner, if in fact he was bs'ing me.
a friend refered him to me and she also referring other people to him soooo..yeah if he's scamming (and im sure he is...) i'd like to make it known to the other people i work with before they trust his word...

and Zoom hehe..yup..im prepared and im dilagent..doing my homework and am off all summer to work with her... but on the bright side the pup has an iron bladder and can hold it for hours...

lappielover..i was given a united all breed registry and pedigree application with info on her 'family tree' including #'s and going back 4 generations...

anyway..the pups breeder is stated as Kathy L. Brown..located in Novinger MO..... if anyone knows of her...
ps...im willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt and thats partially why i wanna find out more about her... I should add that casey is amazingly lovable and gentle...i'll find out tonight after her 1st check up what the vet says..

Honestly, no reputable breeder would even so much as think about putting their puppies in a petstore, let alone actually do it.

Casey sounds like a very sweet puppy though, and good luck with her! She's very fortunate to have found a home such as yours.

Tolller_08 is right. There is no way any good breeder would sell their dogs to a pet store. The guy is lying, but how are you going to "nail" him on it? You can't. Educate your friends to NEVER buy from a pet store, and learn about how to identify a good breeder so you can in turn teach them to identify good breeders. That's all you can do.

Anyway, a quick search turns up this webpage for Kathy Brown in MO - though the location is different on the main page, all her listings give her location as Novinger, MO. She had past listings for Cairn Terriers that came up in webcache but are no longer accessible or active listings.
http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/dogs/breeders/620952/11015.aspx
The rest of her listings pretty much tell the whole story. "Peke-shih-malt?" Disgusting.

Edit: I also found her home address, but I'm pretty sure I can't post that here. It's not hard to locate, though. Google is your friend.

Of course the pet store owner will say she came from a good breeder. Nobody wants to hear that the dog they're buying was bred by the scum of the earth.

This particular puppymill once supplied a store in my hometown with puppies.

Yes, that's what I was attempting to get at. Again, this may sound harsh, but a "pedigree" from a puppy mill means very little, simply due to the fact that you really don't know if those dogs even existed or whether the pedigree was forged.

Many times, a puppy miller will use the same pedigree for any dog it sells of a certain breed, knowing full well that no one will ever be the wiser.

I am sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news. However, since you are curious about these things, I feel that I should be honest, even if it is not what you want or expect to hear.

Yikes! So she's a confirmed puppy mill? Wow... Looks like that pet store owner isn't that careful about where his puppies come from.

Just to reiterate no good breeder ever ever sells to pet stores. Not only do you have no control over who buys your puppies, and you can't take them back if they don't work out, and you will never know if they ended up in the pound etc.. Most breed clubs have a code of ethics the breeders must sign, and one thing that is very clear is that you cannot place puppies through a pet store. But all this aside it makes very little business sense.

If you feed good quality kibble to the mom and dad, take them for all their vet appts and do even the bare minimum of testing, birth the pups with human and if needed vet, attention, raise the pups in home with a proper whelping box, feed them proper food etc etc it costs (if everything goes well) about 500 per pup for my breed if the litter is 3-4. Now what if there is a pup that needs more vet care? Mom with not enough milk (been there done that)?? The cost of one litter was close to 700 a pup. This doesn't include my time.

Now a pet store pays at most 300 for a pup from a 'breeder' and then marks it up according to what the market will bear. So how can anyone who even pretends to breed dogs properly (heck even forgetting ethically) sell to a pet store.... just food for thought.

They will also never know what health, temperament, conformational, genetic, inherited problems they created and they will never make changes or corrections to their breeding programs because they simply don't know what they've done. They can ignorantly go on their merry way being responsible to no one, not the buyers and certainly not to their puppies.

Responsible breeders follow up on their puppies. They *want* to know what they've created. They *want* information so they can breed better dogs.

you guys are sooo helpful...im getting quite an education...thank you for all the insight....
the pedigree deal doesnt really concern me since she will be spayed and the buck stops here...shes strickly a family pup to enjoy and love...
but now that i know so much more then i did a few days ago...i will pass along a cautionary plea to folks to avoid not only this petshop but to finding a good breeder...
the more i learn about puppy milling the more im horrified by such a thing...i think my doggie hit the jackpot though because the kids are making up for lost time in the loving department ..

Oh, I thought it must since you brought up that you had her pedigree from four generations back. Sorry for the confusion! :)

And good for you for spaying her. :)

I am glad to hear that you are learning and that your puppy found a wonderful home.

If you can handle it, google puppy mills and you will find pictures of what 99% of them look like. They are horrifying.

Good luck with your new puppy.
