I only needed Barbie or a knock off to ride my toy horses..

But I wouldn't ban them. Might use them as a discussion point as the child grows. But if you are worried about 'realistic' body images you better not let her play with Dora! There is no way that kid could stand up either! Great big swollen head.. ittty bitty neck..

At that age, I totally didn't want boobs- especially Barbie sized boobs! LOL. I don't recall ever wanting to look like Barbie. I only cared about being able to dress them and act out scenes with my friends.

Oh and I had dolphin toys from Sea World that I totally played with with my mermaid barbies. It was so much fun. :D

I also loved dinosaurs.

You know as a kid I never had an issue with Barbie. I never aspired to be like her, in fact I thought she would look better with brown hair like me, lol.

It seems to me that adults just are over thinking things like Barbie and assume that children will feel bad about themselves later in life. Honestly what kid thinks like that? As a kid I just knew that Barbies were fun to dress up, and fun to play with alongside my beanie babies and pokemon figurines. But I guess while we're at it I shouldn't have had beanie babies because it taught me that animals are toys and I shouldn't have been into pokemon because it teaches me to fight animals for fun.

Oooh yeah!!! I loooved playmobile so much! Especially my zoo set. I have so many boxes upon boxes of them in storage right now
Playmobil was the best! I was never into Lego but could play with Playmobil all day long. And animal toys. Those were good times. :)

Barbies were alright -they certainly weren't my favourite- although I did LOVE the Spice Girls barbies (I may or may not have had them all ;) ). I definitely didn't pick up on any sort of body issues because of barbie, I didn't even really think anything of it. It was just Barbie. Her legs couldn't bend anyway.

Haha, I love those.

Barbie is just way too sexual for me. I don't understand why she has to be that way. I definitely noticed this as a kid. I definitely thought I would look like a bombshell. I just kind of expected it. I also really noticed the scant clothing. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "skanky" but it is definitely a very "grown up" style of dress. I really did want to look and dress like that and I really did have self esteem issues. But i was OBSESSED with playing Barbies.

I don't think putting a lot of thought into a child's toys and tv shows necessarily equals over thinking it. Kids notice a lot more than some adults credit them for.

I don't plan to make it a big issue. We just wont buy them or have them. I think the other dolls will suffice. They are adorable and come with accessories and tons of clothes.

I guess this opinion is more unpopular than I realized.

That's not the same thing to me. It's obvious that Barbie is the epitome of what the supposed ideal woman should be. From the beginning she has been all about having a perfect body. One of the early play sets came with a scale permanently marked "110" lbs and another came with a fake plastic "book" titled "How to lose weight" and the back said "don't eat". Now, I know she isn't that bad now days but she hasn't improved much. Not enough for me.

See, everyone has their rules for their own reasons. I feel like I am allowed one "ban" even if it seems unreasonable. I have met parents who have tons of "bans". Princesses of any kind, any mainstream characters, plastic toys, battery operated toys, etc. all banned from the same house. I felt like I was being pretty reasonable! Lol A lot of us have our certain toys or characters that we just can't stand for one reson or another.
