Just what the title says, are they OK outside on their own or do they want back inside?

One of my dogs, Sheeba, is OK outside on her own. She'll go lie down outside in the sun and be happy.

But my other dog, Leo, is the complete opposite. He will NOT go outside on his own. Every time you let him out, if you close the door behind him, he's right back at the door waiting to come in. You have to knock on the glass to let him know you're there before he'll go to the bathroom.

Edit: In fact, one time I was laying on the couch and watching the door. The door wasn't fully closed all the way but it wasn't ajar or anything, just not fully into the door jamb. Leo comes up to the door, nudges it open, and then runs off and lays down in the yard. It's like he couldn't stand the door being closed but once it was open (even partially; he could've opened it the rest of the way had he wanted to) he was perfectly fine. Crazy dog.

If you let him outside and you're standing there at the door (and he knows you're standing there) he'll go around and explore the yard, sniff around, chase animals, play in the pool, lay down, etc. But if you leave and he happens to look back at the glass and you're not there, it's a beeline to the door.

Same deal with going outside with him. If you're out working in the yard, he's happy to be outside. LOVES to be outside with you and if you open any door in the house, he'll come storming from wherever he was to come outside with you. But if you leave (go through a gate from back to front) or go inside, BAM, he's whining, worrying, etc and won't stop til you come back. It's completely ridiculous.

I guess it's (severe) separation anxiety, I don't know. Never had a dog that acted this way. So I was curious whether ya'lls dogs were like this or were fine outside on their own?

By the by Sheeba is a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix and Leo is a purebred Labrador.

Both are fine. Lizzie will either stalk squirrels, get in the pool, lie down in the cool dirt.

Blaze is fine as along as you've exercised him before you went in. Other wise he likes to bark at things, but I wouldn't expect anything different from a Border Collie.

If I don't go outside with them, the schnauzers will go out, do their business. Maybe go by the woods to poop, and then sit on the porch for me to let them in. The poodles are better, if I have them on the duo drag line they'll run off and play.

I'm hoping once I get my fence up they'll all be happy going outside and playing without me there.

Yup. Voodoo especially loves his sunbathing. I swear that dog is solar-powered.

Eh. They like it better if the door is open so they can choose to go out themselves. They mostly sunbathe. If the door is closed, they wait at the door like post puppies because they think something exciting might happen without them. lol

I am sure they would be but it is not an option. In this world where people put poison out so they can rob your house, where dogs are stolen, where kids can unlock your gate so they can play with your dog, it just isn't safe. IF they go out, i go out. WE spend some nice times sitting out there and watching the wild life. Alot of the time in the winter i am wrapped up in a blanket wishing like heck they would hurry up.

Tyr hates it. He will go out and run from one side of the yard to the other peeing on his favorite trees. When he's done pottying, he stares at the door. The corgis aren't all that happy about being out alone either. Plus if I leave them out, after they stare at the door and figure out that I'm not joining them, they'll go off eating goose poop and drinking out of the disgusting pond and Morgan tends to wander off towards where the beavers live, so I don't allow them to stay out without me. Nyx has never had the opportunity to be out alone.

If I am home they will not go outside and hang out. But my parents say that if they come down to let them out of my apartment when I'm NOT home they are content to hang out in the yard for about a half hour or so without complaint.

Nope, none of mine want to be outside if you're not there with them. They're never let outside alone anyways since they can get through our fence pretty easily. On the rare occasion we've accidentally locked one outside and not noticed, I've found a very sad papillon on the porch, waiting to come in.

Not that I ever leave her outside by herself, but when I've tried to run back inside real quick to grab something, she follows. If left outside unattended, she just stands there and waits for me to come back.

Sometimes i have the front door open where i can see Victor. HE loves to survey his kingdom. He will sit without moving a hair for an hour or more at a time. Pepper does this too. They sit so still the squirrels and birds forget they are there. YOu can see the squirrel getting closer and closer. VIctor's skin will begin to ripple with anticipation. THis is one of my favorites of him while he is doing this. bringing back memories - Dog and Puppy Pictures AS long as i can see him we are all good.

Kaiden loves hanging outside.. much prefers it to inside. Dekka NO WAY.. where I am-she is. Snip will chill in the yard if he has other dogs. Bounce and Dash can go either way. Sport prefers people.. but will hang out in the yard.

As for leaving dogs out.. I live in the country and my yard has no gates.

None of mine like to be out alone. If I close the door I usually have to tell them to get off the porch because they are so worried they are gonna be left out there.

Right now Keiko won't go off the porch unless im outside too. I understand though its a new place, new yard, new dogs.

I know Sierra will be in HEAVEN once we get a place with a yard!! When we're staying at Matt's dads, she loves to be on the tie out just hanging out outside. I check up on her often, but usually have to bring her in myself, she doesn't ask.

Belle would LIVE outside if we let her lol. She will stay out all day long everyday. she loves having a yard. she likes to explore the yard, lounge in the sun, walk the perimeter, and make sure no critter dares to enter her yard lol. She loves the sights, the smells and all the noises. There are times that I let her out in the evening and then go to bed and remember OMG... belle is still outside. LOL.

Beezer likes to hang out outside for a while but he needs to come and check to make sure I'm still here every once in a while and then he will bark at the door when he's had enough of being alone.

hell nope,
ruby jasper and ruby woudl throw hissy fits if i left them out alone, ruby panniks if she cant see me for more than 5 mins IN the house and Jasper has decided i cant even go potty without him supervising.

the chis will also panic.

but not like it matters much, i knwo the wilflife in the area, dodger is small enough for a hawk to off with, rosie and vixie are a little havy for a hawk but we have eagles in the area who would happily take a 5lber.
we also have bobcat in the area and the most dangerous are the coyotes, there NOT shy and will take housecats and dogs, pretty much anything under 12lbs or so.

3 houses down from my parents their 11lb pug was taken by a pair of young coyotes right in the middle of the day too.

since my dogs are all under 10lbs, not worth the risk even if they did like being out there alone.

the cocker will go out unsupervised to pee/poop but then hes at the door scratching to come back in....if your out with him though he LOVES being outside.

We also have a lot of wildlife here too... Just the other day I saw a coyote in our neighborhood, and when Summer and I walk we see deer just a few feet away quite often. We have bobcats, foxes, hawks of several species, owls, even supposedly a mountain lion but I've never seen it... Even with that people leave their dogs outside ALL the time. With my small dogs I would never risk it here. I've heard of yorkies being carried away by owls nearby. Great Horned Owls can take many dogs and cats and we hear them a lot on our property.

I wouldn't risk it with a big dog (except maybe a LGD) either. My next door neighbor's golden was attacked by the coyotes while they were inside and she was in the yard. The coyotes here are bold and don't seem to have a problem attacking a 75 lb dog.

I don't usually leave Auggie outside alone, but if I let him out to play for a few while I'm washing dishes in the kitchen and watching him through the window, he either just lays down in the sun on the deck... or he stands at the door and complains to be let back in. =P
