Hi I am new to this site. We lost our Jack Russell recently to cancer and I am looking for a new dog. I am trying to decide between two rescue dogs. One is a Jack Russell and one is a Norfolk Terrier. Any input?

have you met the dogs? What are their personalities like? What are you looking for in a dog?

So sorry about your JRT. :(

Kudos for rescuing! I think a visit to each of these dogs, as well as reading up the breed that you're not familiar with would be a good idea. I'm not familiar with either breed, but many others are. Good luck on your journey!

Oh and it's breed, not bread. ;) :p

as breeds go JRTs are far far far more terrier than norfolks. Now that will vary by individual. I would meet both dogs and simply pick the one you like the best.

I have met both and that is why I am so confused. I loved both. The Jack Russell looks so much like our dog we lost. I was never a dog person yet when Mylo came to us, I was totally turned into one. He was part of the family and when we lost him it was sudden and I was devistated. I think about him everyday and miss him so much. The Jack Russell at the rescue place is 6. That is why I am worried. I am so afraid of losing another dog. He is so full of life though. Also I know its weird but if I get one that looks like our last one, is that like marrying someone who looks like your ex?

No, it's not weird to get another dog that looked a lot like your old one. That's why a lot of people tend to stay with the same breed. Plus your first dog probably looked appealing to you, so this one would probably be appealing too even if you weren't comparing him to your first.

Six years old is not very old for a JRT. Small breeds can live a long time, I think 12 or 15 years is pretty common. Of course my chihuahua is going to live to 30. :) Good luck choosing!

I am sorry for the loss of you dog. Kudos to you for looking at rescues as well.
Most Jrts live to be 15-16+ yrs young. Having said that, as Dekka already stated Jrts generally have far more natural prey drives than Norfolks, so that has to be considered.
Don't rush it, spend some time with the dogs, ask if you can try each of them on a trial basis for a week or weekend. The more time you spend with each of them, especially away from the rescue, the more you will have a better idea of each dogs temperament and personality.

Good luck and we look forward to see photos.

Sorry for your loss. I would choose the JR but I guess I am partial. That said I got a different breed after I lost my last dog. She was a shih tzu...quite a difference in energy levels :)
