Poor thing, this is ridiculous. This is the 7th or 8th dog we've had dropped off here since we've lived here. This area gets LOTS of drop offs, it's very remote, and they think because it's a church, someone will have the heart to take it in. Well thankfully we do, otherwise these poor babies would starve out here!

Someone dropped a basset hound/beagle mix (looks like to me, anyway) here almost a week ago. At first I thought maybe he was just passing through, but he's been laying at our doorstep every morning when we take Chloe out, so I'm pretty sure someone dropped him. It's the same every time. The poor little guy. :(

He's ADORABLE, and I wish I could keep him myself, but I've found someone who's willing to take him and work with him, and give him a forever home if I can CATCH HIM. He's very sweet, but very scared. I haven't been able to touch him at all, but he will come very close, but then dart away. I've tried to feed him from my hand, but he'll come really close, smell my hand, but won't come closer than 5ft or so. We started feeding him last night when we realized he was a stray or drop off (doubtfully a stray/lost dog (although I posted a found dog ad on craigslist), there aren't many houses out here he could've wandered from).

Anyway, here are some photos of him. Gorgeous dog, and such sweet eyes! Chloe loves him, and wants to play with him, but he's scared to death of her, and runs off when I take her out to use the bathroom (at least he's not aggressive towards her).

Awww, he's really, really cute!

Isn't disgusting how people can just drop a dog off like that? I don't understand it. At the very least if they don't want the dog anymore they could take it to an animal shelter.

Awww, poor boy! I hope he comes around soon - it took a couple of months to get a hand on Murphy and Mick. I'm glad you found someone willing to take him - hope they have a fenced yard!

He has such a sad face. Looks like he's been through a lot. Hopefully you're able to catch him and he's able to experience what love can really be about. Poor thing.

Poor thing. I don't understand how people can just drop their animals off wherever, just thinking "Oh, someone will find him." The least they could do is try and find another home for them - anywhere would be better than living in the streets.

Thanks for trying to help him. The same thing happens to us; we're just north of you.

Thanks for all the catching vibes!!

I'm thinking that he might've been a hunting dog or something, that either was gun-shy or just got too old, and was dumped because he was considered "useless". He has absolutely no fear of trucks, and acted like he wanted to get in the back of the truck we're borrowing to move, when we pulled in the driveway. And someone was here with a trailer yesterday, and he almost jumped right into it. Which means maybe he's used to loading up into a truck.

There are a LOT of hunters around here and we've had 2 or 3 beagles dropped here before. It's possible that he was hunting with someone and just got separated and lost, but I doubt he'd be so scared of people. Who knows, it doesn't really matter how he got here, he's here, and he's actually making a lot of progress!!

The vibes might be working! He ate ham out of my hand today, and was very sweet! No food aggression whatsoever. He was wagging his tail, licking my hand, and even let me pet him for a few seconds. He's still scared, and doesn't really like to come up to people, but will do it for food. He's coming around really quickly, but we're leaving TODAY. We'll be back tomorrow because that's when the movers will be moving the rest of our stuff to the house, but that's it. After tomorrow we'll only be back here sundays and wednesdays for church.

So I've talked with the lady who wants to take him, and we're trying to work something out to get the dog to her. I've asked her what she thought about getting a humane trap to catch him with, and haven't gotten a reply yet. I hate to stress him or make him any more fearful of people than he already is, but I don't want to just leave him here either. And the whole thing would probably be very quick since he's so motivated by food, he'd probably just walk right into the trap, and be on his way to his new home.

The other option is to have her come out for a few hours every day to try to gain his trust on her own, and then try to get him into her car. That's a little more extreme in the sense that she's gonna have to commit to coming all the way out here (not sure how far she is from me) every day, and spend a lot of time trying to get him, but if she'd rather do that than use the trap, then that's fine. Whatever works, I'm happy with. I just hope everything works out. I feel terrible leaving, this all happened at the worst time possible. =/

Honestly, a humane trap sounds like the more humane option. He could easily get killed being loose like that. Yes it might spook him, but better he be a bit fearful than be dead.

I've been able to catch some strays by dropping food all the way up to my car (I have a wagon) and then putting some in the back of my car. Most of them are hungry and just jump right in.

There is a no-kill shelter I volunteer at several times a year. It's over an hour to get there. Anyway, they are in the country and have a very long drive. There is a donation box at the front of the drive. You'd be amazed at how many times they open that thing up in the morning to find dogs. I'm glad they are taking them to a shelter but come on, people!
