Anyone else find it kind of annoying when people abbreviate their dog's breed? I'm pretty good at breeds, and the more common ones - JRT, GSD, APBT, etc. - are easy. But every once in a while people will come out with something very random - GWP, PWC, ACD - and I just can't figure what in the world they're talking about. I understand if you've mentioned your breed name once in the thread before and now want to abbreviate it, that's easy to figure out. But to just throw in some letters and assume everyone knows what it is.... Is this annoying to anyone else???

I don't find it annoying at all. I abbreviate/shorten Dance's breed name all the time as I don't feel like typing out the entire thing if I don't have to. In the past there have been a couple that I didn't know, but then I usually just google it or come up with the answer myself after thinking about it for a bit.

Depends, I understand why they do it, the only one that I have heard which has thrown me was PBGV Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen and I see why they would not want to say that and just abbreviate.

I wouldn't say annoying, but I do find it frustrating. Let's just say it's very "user unfriendly". I've many times wished posters would just take a few extra seconds and type out the breed name. Once you do that once in a given post you could thereafter abbreviate. My impression is that board veterans are primarily communicating with other board veterans. Certainly their perogative, but sometimes us newcomers and breed illiterate people feel a little excluded.

I find it easier than typing mighty unruly terrible titan, so I say MUTT instead.

Sometimes it makes me work my brain a bit, but I am ok with it.... ( I do it for my JRTs.. LOL )

I actually tend to think in abbreviations for most breeds. I don't think "german shepherd," I think "gee-ess-dee."
So, nope - not annoying.

If you aren't sure you can always ask what it means. => Any abbreviation anywhere is the same thing. Nobody will be mean or think you're stupid for asking for clarification.

As long as it isn't dumb. Like BH for basset hound. just type basset. or GR. Golden will do. but PWD, GSP, FCR, etc. i don't mind. I figure it out or don't bother or just ask.

I say "BC" a lot... so I suppose I'm guilty! It just gets redundant typing "Border Collie" "Border Collie" "Border Collie" over and over. Dx

I don't mind it. I actually like trying to figure out abbreviations that I don't get at first. But I'm a weirdo, FYI! hehe

It doesn't bother me ,,, sometimes I'm stumped and have to think !! I've never written GR .... always have said Golden or Golden Retriever .... if I saw LR , it would strain my brain !!! Why not Lab ?? I've learned many over my years here , but still wonder on some .
