And you call yourself a vet?

I went to my cousin's vet with her for the new cat she adopted from a nearby rescue. While I was in there, I decided to ask the vet about feeding my dog pork. I thought I remembered hearing that it was harmful to dogs, but I couldn't remember. I was planning on researching it anyways, but I thought I'd go ahead and ask him while I was there. This was his reply: "I dunno. You should just feed it to her and see how she does." :yikes: WHAT?! So, people who aren't sure about rat poison should just eat it and see if they survive? I mean, don't get me wrong. If you don't know, that's one thing. But don't say to just try it and find out! Either say "I don't know, but I can find out for you" or say "I don't know. But you should find out more information before feeding it to your dog."

Some people... Or it could be because I'm just in a pissy mood. But it really made me mad.

On a side note, I'm changing Raja's name to Roger. And she's officially a boy now. Because EVERY time someone asks her name and I say Raja, they say something like: "Roger? Oh, that really suits such a handsome boy!" lol It's gotten to the point where I don't even correct strangers anymore. If I know I'm never going to see them again, I say something like "Why, thank you. He is rather handsome, isn't he?" lol

I was planning on asking Red because she's better than google when it comes to feeding raw. :D And so far, I've seen conflicting answers. Some say yes, some say no, some say only if it's been frozen first. lol

I say yes and that's all that should matter.

Are you a member of the rawfeeding Yahoo! group?

It's fine. As with other raw meats, I'd freeze it first, though.

Middie had pork chops last week, and you wouldn't believe what they did for his teeth. :yikes: I hadn't noticed how nasty they were getting...

Nope. And thanks, y'all. Raja's teeth are already gleaming white, though. :D And Tempie can only have beef right now. But I had a lot of pork given to me, so I'm glad to hear I can feed it to Raja.

I'm still irritated with the vet, though. :p

Sounds like a VERY uneducated/apathetic Vet...
On the up-side, at least he didn't have you arrested for endangering your dog's life by feeding lethal, filthy RAW FOOD! And force a bag of Science Diet on you.

Pork is perfectly fine. In the US, the risk of trichinosis is incredibly rare. Where is the pork coming from? If it's actually wild caught, I would freeze it for a few weeks before feeding it. (Freezing pork less than 6 inches thick for 20 days at 5 °F or three days at −4 °F kills larval worms.)

He actually did recommend I switch to a much safer food. He even mentioned the Science Diet outside in the waiting room. I've gotten used to that, so I just politely declined. Every time something is wrong with Raja, one or more of my family blames the raw diet. I'm surprised they didn't say the smell of the raw diet MADE that snake come over and bite her. :p

Some of the pork is wild and some isn't, but it's already been frozen longer than that. Thanks!

PW, you always have the best solutions to everything! :rofl1:

MyHorse, As for the gender confusion, we get the opposite with Morgan all the time. He MUST be a GIRL! Because ONLY girls are named Morgan. Nevermind that it's historically a male name. I do the same thing you do, if I don't even know the person's name (aka, will never see them again), I don't bother correcting them.

I swear though, I could make Morgan wear a blue vest with "I'M A BOY" written in huge letters all over it, and people would still call him a she. :lol-sign:

What a dink, LOL (the vet that is) Perhaps he figured YOU weren't paying for the visit so he didn't need to go out of his way to give you a good answer

I also think Roger will do fine on pork. Some dogs have trouble with the pork fat, most don't.
Orson is one of these dogs. I'm not talking about raw, but pork in general gives him the runs and sometimes causes puking. I think it probably is the fat content, but we just avoid it completely now.

i find that feeding dogs raw meat is very healthy. and not to metion harmless i looked it up and here`s what i found.

Pork in itself is as harmless to dogs as chicken, beef or any other meat. However, there is a slight risk of your dog being infected with trichinosis by eating pork. Trichinosis, also known as trichinellosis, is a worldwide, food borne disease caused by an intestinal roundworm, uncommon in the United States. Both humans and pets who eat raw or undercooked meat of infected animals can develop the disease. Undercooked or raw meat of infected animals contains the roundworm. The disease can lead to muscle soreness and pain together with swelling of the upper eyelids in mild cases but can lead to more severe symptoms.

If you would like to feed pork but want to take all necessary precautions, it is recommended that the pork be frozen for 3 weeks to kill the parasite. The most important precaution is to make sure that all fresh pork and pork products are properly cooked. Other raw and undercooked meat should also be avoided, especially meat from wild animals.

hope this helps

i think the vet's point is you won't know what it'll do to/for her until you actually feed it to her. some meats just don't sit well w/ some dogs and there is no way to know before hand.

haha. Not how i thought the thread was going to read out....

I was expecting a vet response like "your going to kill your dog feeding raw pork!! Here have som' science diet" at least you didn't have to go down that road with a vet yet...

Im an occasional raw feeder and i prefer pork over most stuff....plus its ussually on sale....NICE.

Eta: i agree... kill the vet.
