IMO the fact that she can sing, allows her to do drugs with some amount of impunity. If she could not sing, she'd likely be on a streetcorner turning tricks to support her habit.

The non famous and non talented die everyday because of her same habit. Her talent is not due to her drug use, IMO...but her talent can save her from it...if she cares enough to try.

If you are referring to my response. What I meant to say was that many respectable(or at least I think), did drugs and made great music....so why do people make such a big deal about Amy Winehouse? It's the same thing. Never said drugs made her make great music.
But it's not like she was the only one doing it.

If we look back through the history of the arts, it is rife with substance abuse . . . . back as far as you want to go, not just the modern era.

Edgar Allen Poe, for one example . . . . Opium's historically been a muse.

There does appear to be a correlation to seeking altered mental states and creativity. I write far better when I've loosened up with a couple of glasses of wine - not too much, just enough to break down the barriers of the mundane and allow the creative, free consciousness to come forth.

even if she is on drugs I think it makes her a great singer..
One thing you (general) should do, as an artist/aspiring famous person, is learn from the past...but I'm not sure repeating it...or considering it glamorous, makes much sense at all.

I think the girl has issues...evident in her choice of men...self destructive...she should be seeing a counselor. Cuz she's coming up on age 27 and we all know what happens then!

Renee...the man thing says to me it's less about her creativity outlet, and more about her self contained issues. I have known women who make similar choices in men...and lifestyle and it's sad.

As a fellow woman I worry about that on her behalf almost more than the drug use. It's hard to allow yourself to allow good things to happen to yourself when you DO deserve better...when there's something holding you back. I feel for her, on that score.

I listened to a few of her songs on YouTube, and she has great control over her voice.. and is definitely different.. but I don't like her. I don't find her voice appealing at all, it reminds me of nails on a chalkboard.

I'm really sick of the drugged out stars getting so much attention. Maybe part of getting a multi million dollar contract should be taking a drug test:rolleyes: Its not acceptable to me that someone is really this screwed up-And I read a bio of her on yahoo after I saw her on tv once, its just nutts- gets put up there were kids can want to be them and see all the attetnion they get for it etc etc. And I know rap and some other music is not so great but this girl is literally an overdose waiting to happen. And until then there are little girls who are big fans of her and its sick.
(this is all very conservative for me to say since I usually just say don't listen to it but maybe it was her bio that threw me over the edge-doesn't even try to better herself)
I do like her rehab song cuz its catchy but it sucks when our patients sing it instead of answering you;)
Ditto.

I look at it this way... I am not going to let a person into my house via TV or radio if I would not let them in my house in person.

No way would I want Hannah to associate that type of person with success. Talent or not, no way.

Still, I hope she can overcome her obstacles.
Great way to look at it. I'll need to remember that.

I guess I'm one of the odd ones out- I love her music and I like her and her style. *shrugs* That's me, though.

I'm rooting for her all the way to get help for her substance abuse issues. I don't want to turn on the news and see she died from an OD.

For those of you who won't let the art in because of the artist..

Will you sensor Paintings by Piccasso or Van Gough as well? Really I see these things as an educational tool I can use with my child. For example. Darien has taken to liking this online gladiator game that is pretty violent. Now I could just say.. nope you can't play that, be the mean mom and not teach him a thing. Now he knows it is a game and isn't real, but I worried about him thinking violence is fun on some level. So together we watched parts of the movie gladiator, and talked about what it was really like to be in wars back then, and what it was like to be a gladiator in ancient rome. WOW was I ever impressed by my child.

If my child developed a love of Ms Winehouse's music, (or Aerosmith for that matter) or Pablo Piccasso paintings, I would discuss with him the beauty of art, and the values of the people and of us. Cause one day they are going to have to grow up and make thier own decisions. The worst kids I know were the ones who never got the chance to learn this vital skill.

any way. Not really a fan, but I don't really care one way or another what she does with her life.

Well gosh that sounds like one of those decisions best made by each individual parent or set of parents, based upon thier wishes for their child's education...doesn't it?

I couldn't do that. My favorite artists both in music and in real life are some messed up people. Doesn't make their art any less important or influential to me, though. Knowing Van Gogh's torment and psychological problems might provide some insight into his paintings, but his issues for lack of a better word do not make the art any less beautiful.

And I love love love love Aerosmith, btw. And Van Gogh is my favorite artist. (Thank you Dekka) xD Sorry, just had to let that out.

You don't have to idolize the artist to appreciate their work.
