I had been without a dog for 10 years before I got Beau and I picked that name out many years before I actually got him. I thought of naming him Angus (Gus for short) but I'm glad I didn't as it woudn't have suited him. Belle was going to be Bella or Chloe. I tried Bella for a few days and kept shortening it to Bell so Belle stuck. When Ben came along I knew it was going to have to be another one syllable "B" name and finally decided, after trying Bob, Bruce, etc,....it was going to be Gentle Ben..suits him perfectly.

Whimsy is short for her registered name Whimsical. The only debate I had with her was to name her Whimsy or Whim.

Savvy came to me named Benjamin (and is still known as such to people who knew him as a baby) but Benjamin isn't really my style and to me, was way too proper. I wanted to call him Figment because I love the name Fig, which I'd have called him for short. But Having a Fig and a Zig seemed like it wouldn't work out so well. Plus Savvy just seemed perfect for him. His registered name is Savoir Faire. He very much follows my theory that you should name dogs things you want them to live up to :)

Ziggy was Chase at the shelter. I wanted to name him Ziggy (Ziggy Stardust) and Jeff didn't think it was bad, so that was that. Pretty easy.

Loki came to me named Nikki and well, can't really have a dog with the same name as you LOL Loki fits her a bit too well, hence the rule about naming dogs things you want them to live up to ;)

I wanted to name him "Lestat" at first. It would SO not have hit him though! There were a ton of other names. Noah was second place, but I didnt want to confuse him with the "no" command. "Noah no". Riley it was. He was a Riley, and I couldnt see him as any other name. No regrets!

Reggie my cat "came" to me as Noodles (he was a barn kitty that got injured and came to my work, they called him Noodles). I hated the name, and Noodles does so NOT fit him! Reggie is PERFECT for that cat! He just looks like a Reggie!

I have 2 names picked out for the new puppy. Ill see which one fits better once I meet him. I am not the type to wait until I meet a pet to pick out a name. I like to have one ready.

Riley has always been Riley and it totally suits him for whatever reason. We had only a few picked out on our way to get him and as soon as I picked him up, I knew his name.

Aura was going to be Moxie, but then we decided that having two names ending in the "ie" sound might not be the best idea. It took us a long time to agree on a new name for her, thankfully a friend suggested Aura and it stuck. I wouldn't change it now, it suits her for sure, although Moxie would have been great too.

On the list of possibilities for Eve were Dash, Jett and Blitz. I know there were a few others. I think part of me was expecting a super rough-and-tumble tomboy dog, and Eve was a quieter, softer puppy. Her breeder picked Eve out of the list of names I sent her.

Ripley was Pepe before I brought him home.

Dakota was Bruiser before we brought him home.

Dash was always Dash. It suits her well.

Well, Jackson just fits him. I do recall having a few other names lined up that I liked. Before I met him, I had a picture of him, so I just stared at and would say the names out loud... there were some others I liked but Jackson just kept coming back to me and I just couldn't get it out of my head. It totally FITS him. My mom was the original one who came up with it because we had watched the Johnny Cash movie and LOVED the song 'Jackson'. I also was/am a Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 fan, so it worked in that sense too. So I am not sure if I could ever change it even if I wanted or whatever, because it's just the thing where I can't see any other name suiting him, even from before I met him. I guess the only thing is sometimes it can be hard to say - it's only two syllables but sometimes it seems like it's three for some reason. I often call him Jax.

I thought I was being all unique and original but suddenly, Jackson is a very popular name and it angers me, LOL. Good thing is I meet more kids named it than dogs. I've only actually ever met one other dog named Jackson. I don't like anything too off the wall or crazy but I do like to keep names not super popular - I'm not a big fan of Bailey, Max, Lilly, etc (all of which we have in our family, multiples have had the same name, haha). Jackson's on the top people list but not dogs - yet. Hopefully it stays that way.:p

Ozzy went through a crapload of names. I wanted to name him a bunch of things, but none of them fit him. Steven wanted to name him Spartacus, lol, and I said absolutely NO. One of our friends named him actually. We were all sitting around playing with him, calling him puppy puppy, and he said, "Hey, what about Ozzy?" and it stuck.

Enzo came to us "Taylor Kina" which is a terrible name for a dog, lol. Steven wanted to name HER Janis. I said hell no! lol. I named her Enzo Ferrari after the racing track she put in in the backyard and the book "The Art of Racing In The Rain" that I read after getting her and tentatively deciding to name her Enzo. I read the book and said it must be a sign that I picked this up to read the night after getting her.

Knox came to us Simon. He's definitely not a Simon. Simon is a shy retiring name (in my opinion) more for a cat than a dog. We went through a TON of names for him. I wanted to name him Kracken, Steven used his one veto on Kracken. My boss/friend/mentor actually named him. He was talking about how obnoxious he is, and what a jack@ss and I said we should name him Johnny Knoxville, and he shortened it to Knox, short for both Johnny Knoxville and onKnoxious. :)

I named Kiba and Stryder before seeing them.
Tsuki's name from the "breeder" was Tori, then she went through being called Q, Bounce, then eventually Tsuki.
Lincoln didn't have a name, I called him Red or PupPup before thinking up a name.
Charlie's name at the shelter was Peggy (omg really?), kids named her Dixey, and I switched it. Definitely NOT a Dixey lol

Todd came with the name Todd. We were thinking in the week before we collected him, that we would have to change it, as we really didn't like the name Todd. Then we picked him up, and realised, he was in fact, a Todd :rofl1: there was no other name we had even thought might suit him!

Maddy's list of names were: Maddy (another word for black dog/wolf in Gaelic), Skye (the rescue centre she came from was on the Isle of Skye), Bella (I was really into Twilight at the time) and Caley (said like Caledonia).

Lucy's list was: Sula, Megan, Miley.

Katy's didn't have a list, the only other name we liked for her was Darcie. Looking back, I wish I had called her Nala, she suits that way more than Katy.

Off topic but my mechanic is also from the isle of Skye ;)

Liz, Bear & Daisy all had their names long before I met them - Liz just fit, and I was dating the guy who named Daisy at the time so there was no changing that ;)

I named Rage, and it fits well enough. Plus it makes me look badass in a sport that is still very much a boy's club ;)

Buster was almost Spike and Frog but Buster suits him perfectly so I'm glad thats where we stuck.

Quinn was Quinn for years before she was born. Thats what I wanted to call my first female BC and the day I met her I knew it was perfect.

Poppy was almost Birdie, we were even discussing it last week if we should change it but i think Poppy works.

Chloe had two names before we got her. She was Nina at the shelter and then Alex at her foster home. Chloe's perfect for her IMO (but we end up calling her weenie anyway).

Violet was almost Bella and I think either one fits her.

Of my two, Summer came named. She was 4 years old and it's a really nice name in my opinion. So I kept it. It fits her extremely well, she's a soft, sweet, beautiful dog with golden fur.... can't think of a better name for her.

Mia was a tough tough dog to name. I wanted something short and easy to yell out for potential agility training. Her name was originally Gayla (can you imagine her as a Gayla?) I tossed around a lot of names and Maya was a top contender. For some reason it just wasn't working for me. She was called Gayla and puppy for the first few days when my dad was throwing out some name ideas and said why not use the name Mia instead of Maya. It's a common name for a dog, I know, but it just really FITS. Short and sweet, feminine but not too feminine.

Beau my mom named. It was between Beau, Napoleon (Leo), and Gaston.

Rose came named. It fit too well to change, she's such a soft, sweet dog.

Nard... Bernard was called the Saint Bernard puppy when they were first born. He was really fat compared to the other puppies and brown and white with floppy ears (they thought he was a phalene for a long time). That got shortened to Bernard. The really funny thing is originally we were calling him Bernie (I even found threads on here where he's called Bernie). He is sooo not a Bernie. He's a Nard.

The only dog I REALLY wish I'd changed their name was Trey. It never fit him even after having him 13 years I never liked his name nor thought it was the right name for him. He should have been a Buddy or something of that sort.

Lucy came to us named. That day I wanted to name her Hannah (we picked her up from the shelter during Hurricane Hannah), but Zachary vetoed it--he really hates that name for some reason. I still think it would be cute, but Lucy fits nicely and I've never wished she was named anything else.

When I first adopted Chloe, I was going to name her Raina. No one else liked it, though, so we ended up changing it to Chloe. Chloe fits her stupid side, but Raina does fit her more bitchy personality, I think.

Apollo came to us named Apollo, but I was thinking about changing it to Dexter...again, Apollo fits him perfectly, but sharing the same name as a TV serial killer would have fit, too. ^^

Rose was always Rose. Blackie was always Blackie. Cora came to us Cora, and I love that name so it stuck.

We threw around Buzz and Domino. Buzz stuck but Domino is in his registered name.

Bailey was Bailey before she was born, before I met her. It fits. :)

Rascal is frequently called Baxter by Tim, so much so that I refer to him as RascalBaxter these days.

Rasza is most commonly called "Raj"

Kaylee's first name was Dee. I hated it, so I called her Serenity for about a week until her breeder found out... she hated the name. So we compromised, and I renamed her Kaylee. (Of course, she mostly gets called K now. We went from one letter "D" to another - "K!") Of course, if I'd had known her personality right away, I'd have called her Vera... like I always wanted.

Jayne
's first name was Louie. When he was returned to the breeder, she changed his name to Newt. When I got him, I renamed him Jayne because there was no way I was calling him Newt.. People either love his name or hate it. :)

Revy was always Revy, though her breeder's nickname was "The Holstein" because she was fat and ginormous! If she'd been a boy, her name would have been Saxon... I still intend to use that name someday.

Ronin's name had been Hugh, and I couldn't say it easily. So I changed it.

Tallahassee
was Ella for a short time, I think. I like Talla MUCH better. :)

And Jador... poor Jador.... she's had SO many names. She started out as Halle. Breeder decided to change it to Star. Then she still didn't respond to it, so she got the generic nickname of Baby. Eventually she started responding to the name of another one of the breeder's dogs (Dior) so her name became J'adore. I've altered the spelling because apostrophes in names annoy me, but I mostly call her Jado (JAY-doh). But her silly nickname is.... Halle Starbaby J'adore. Like a hippie name!

My parents liked Lady and Buffy, all of those "classic" Cocker names  but once we thought of Maddie THAT was it!! ;)

And Bailey was Shelby when I first got her, it didn't suit her at all.

Missy was a Missy, and always will be ;)

Luce was Grace at the shelter. Yeah, she is so NOT a Grace. I don't remember having any other serious frontrunning names for her.

Mushroom came with the name Mushroom. I considered changing it to Linus, which would be totally fitting, but having a dog named Mushroom is hilarious.

Steve was very nearly Tag. He comes from a long line of dogs with names like Sprint, Race, Dash, Speed, Drive and I wanted to stick with that theme. Tag is cute. It totally wasn't him. At all. Not even remotely. He looked like a Steve, and I can't honestly imagine him as anything else.
