The problem is that it is not always the obvious!! Yes, people who want to commit suicide because their partner left them is one thing.
But people who are depressive (really depressive) can't simply see that, turn a switch and be happy to be alive. Like I said...they are trapped in a box and you can tell them whatever you want to...they will not see your point. And those people are ill and need treatment, not mockery about how pathetic they are.

Now that's social satire of the finest kind :D Maybe you should be writing for SNL.
hehehe, i couldnt help myself :p

Jokes aside though...

I DO want to point out that i agree with Jules. There are some people who do need serious help. However, that doesnt change my stance on them being selfish....its just that they cant control it, or dont realize how selfish they are being (if that makes sense...im not saying they are intentionally selfish)

In cases like the one Jenna just described...I can only hope that you guys restrained yourself....cause that is not going to be a wake up call to someone (maybe in some rare case it would be...)

I think that is comparable to making a child feel like their problems arent important cause you know, adults have sooo many more important things to deal with...who knows, a divorce, debt, death of a loved one, etc....but that child who may be upset that her friend didnt share doesnt KNOW of these issues, and shouldnt be punished for not experiencing them. Their problems shouldnt be treated as less important...

all that is going to do is make them feel even more hopeless and lost, when they reach out for help and get rejected....

HOWEVER, unless you are experiencing serious psychological issues that are completely inhibiting you from making a choice other than suicide...i have a hard time feeling much sympathy for the person...

I think everyone has the right to choose to die.

I think it is sad, but I don't think they are pathetic.

I feel sorrow, I don't feel hate for them.

Commiting suicide is the very definition of pathetic....

"hapless: deserving or inciting pity"

"inspiring mixed contempt and pity"

"inspiring scornful pity"

J-E-N-N :p ;)

We did.

Some people do need help, but unfortonetly I dont deal with them. Im ny line of work I only deal with the stupid ones. THe 17yr olds who slit their wrists because they've been dumped.

If you need help GET IT. That's just my opinion

suicide may seem pathetic to the rest of us that are not mentally unstable. It is easy to judge when you are sitting in the bleachers and not going through whatever the person is. I do believe it is the most selfish way to die..that is to the rest of the people around that person, but when someone is driven by a chemical imbalance, a mental disorder, a brain tumour that affects behavior, a depression so deep that they feel there is no other alternative, there is nothing pathetic in their decision, just a waste and a shame, and a tragedy. There's is the ultimate loss, and the family that loved them. I have read that very very few people make it through this life without considering or attempting it at least once. Jules i think you said it very well.

I agree. Calling them pathetic, well.. Like I said earlier, if you feel so **** you want to DIE.. I mean, you're not thinking rationally, and you will convince yourself that noone will even NOTICE.

And we can compare them to cancer patients till the cows come home. There IS no comparison.

I want money, people waste it. Not going to change MY situation is it?

I think it extremely sad that other people can make a person feel that bad about themselves. I think we all need to think about what we say before we say it. None of us are that perfect.

??? he was tormenting himself...i dont think he was being made fun of...

He was only 18 too...its possible he hadnt even gone through his final "growth spurt" yet...

also, ok, this sounds really bad...but i think it is a pretty well known fact (or is it a stereotype) that the average asian does have a smaller penis...and he wasnt in america, so its not like he was the only asian...i just think that is so weird that it bothered him that much. Some people really need to learn to "take a joke" or "laugh it off" ... there are some things you just cant change. Whatever happened to loving yourself the way you are?

I honestly have no sympathy for those who kill themselves. I do however feel sorry for friends and family of that person because they must deal with the pain. If you feel your life is so terrible that you must kill yourself, then so be it,thats your problem, no one's life is perfect. I feel sorry for those who get murdered by phycos, who get raped, and the innocent poeple brought into dangerous situations. I don't know why poeple pity those who commit suicide, I pity those who were innocent and had their lives taken from them.

wow - I am so suprised at people's lack of empathy...

If people are depressed and crying daily, self harming, miserable we help them and feel for them, but if they feel like killing themselves they get NO sympathy?

I just hope you guys don't ever have to face a loved one who is suicidal..

I am also surprised at some peoples lack of compasion. My sister in law commited suicide 2 years ago leaving behind 2 children, its so sad, I dont know how someone can laugh about something like this. Some people should think before they "speak", who knows maybe there is someones child who has lost their parent or a parent who has lost their child due to suicide reading this, it can be very hurtful and you never know, it could happen to someone you love, I dont think you would be laughing.

I agree with you.

I dont think most people understand suicide at all. Its more than just.. "I am gonna kill myself now, because someone said my hair looks ugly". It goes way deeper than that. Its a combination of things. It takes a long time for someone to feel suicidal or attempt it.

There are many reasons people attempt suicide....some reasons are not aways apparant to others. Almost three years ago, very late on night, I attempted suicide. I had NEVER thought of taking my own life, EVER. I was taking a drug called "Ambien" to help me sleep at night, and I had a terrible reaction to the medication which caused for me to be suicidal. It totally blocked out my memory when I'd take it, so I'm not exactly sure what happened. About a year ago, I saw an episode of the today show, and they had some guests on the show who had the same thing happen to them. It was a terrifying experience to me...I was in intensive care for a few days and am lucky that I don't have permanent damage to my kidneys of liver because of it. This episode taught me never to judge others until I've walked in their shoes. I don't share this very often but thought it would be appropriate here.

Exactly.

And people mustn't forget, that many anti-depressants can give people suicidal thoughts as a side effect. Which to me is just ridiculous.

I would have thought people would have much more empathy... :(

Me to Diz....but....it's hard sometimes because we don't understand. I used to be more judgemental then I am now until the "road of hard knocks" smacked me in the face a few times and forced me to take a look at myself.

I know what you mean about anti-depressant, it's scary that a medication to make us feel better can cause suicidal thoughts....crazy.

I think I have always been pretty accepting...

I haven't ever felt suicidal, but I can put myself in the shoes of pretty much anyone and see the world through their eyes. You have to have empathy in this world.. I often think I have too much. I can feel what people are feeling in a room, and I generally understand people very well, how they think.. A cancerian trait apparently. We sometimes joke I am psychic (I am not superstitious!).

Well.. I guess I DO forget we are not all the same though.. Some people like to have walls around them, and like to feel apart from others.. Even if we are all essentially the same..

I know what you mean Diz.....I can sometimes feel a persons pain and I take it home with me and agonize over it. I have to be very careful because of my work...I see so many people who have it so bad. I try to turn my thoughts off after awhile...it's hard though.:(
