Thanks so much guys! They make us happy...and busy (mainly Seagle!).

Bogart, yes Hutch is a smooth coated Saint. The reason you don't find much information on the smooth coat alone is because they are in all ways the same as their counterpart rough coated dog. The smooth coated Saint still has a very thick insulating coat. They were the original way the breed was developed. Once the rough coats were developed the munks realized that the snow would clump on them and actually hinder their performance in the snow. So the munks would keep the smooth coated puppies and send the rough coats down into the valley to live out their lives on farms etc. So in short, a Saint can live in a warm environment but special precautions have to be made. They need to be able to have access to air conditioning, excercise in the early morning or the evening when it isn't so warm outside. They love to swim, so this is how we get activity in the summer months. They can suffer from heat stroke easier than some other breeds because even those smooth coats have fur to withstand a cold environment.

Dr.Mom, Seagle has never had a clear seperation between the white and red on his muzzle. In the white area he actually has red spots flecked throughout making it look the way it does. I don't know about early graying and beagles. A friend of mine however has a beagle mix who by the time she was 5 had a complete gray mask. Maybe other hound owners here can chime in?
