We got a puggle last Sunday...Monday we took him to the vet with slight case of kennel cough and we gave him the antibiotics. We also had his stool sample taken just to chack for any problems. Friday we got the results and Coby tested positive for coccidia and giardia. That day he slept alot and began vomiting, having diarrhia, and quevering.

We rushed him to the emergency hospital Friday night and it is now monday and he is still there. We visit everyday and things just don't seem to be getting better.

He is now very conjested, still having bloody mucusy diarrhea. His head is hanging and his tail is between his legs. His does not want to eat or drink and looks very skinny. His is on IV, albon, panacur, metronidazole, and anti-acid and anti-diarrhea.

We are vey upset and not sure what the outcome usually is with these illnesses. Any help or experiences would be greatly appreticated.

I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy. My adult dogs contracted giardia about 10 years ago, I can't remember all the particulars but I do remember that it seemed to take forever for them to get well. Have you contacted the breeder to see if they will help with the vet costs? Did you by any chance get a health guarantee?
Keep us updated on his progress, I'll say a special prayer for him tonight....

is cureable, if its the sickness i'm thinking of, our Male Sheltie got it. Its caused by stagnent water that has contracted bacteria in it. Within a night at the vets, he was back at home, but still very groggy. he had to be on IV all night, the poor thing!

I'm not sure about the other though. I hope everything turns out alright!

Where did you get your dog from>

Thanks for all of your support and encouragement. I just received a call that he is the same or a little worse and they now think he has pneumonia. I will let you when I come back from visiting.

I would think your puppy already had the Giardia and coccidia when you got him and the kennel cough
I would expect the breeder to pay your full vet bill
I hope the little guy pulls through, this is such a sad thing
some breeders should be shot

saying prayers for you and your baby

If i"m not mistaken, Grammy is talking about the new dog virus that is similar to kennel cough that was found recently through the Greyhound circuit in NY.

Correct me if I'm wrong though Grammy :)

Anyways, if its the right one, this virus is extremely similar to Kennel Cough in symptoms, but there is not cure for it yet.

Does the diarrhea have a horrible smell to it? You stated it was bloody and sometimes that is parvo? I would think your vet would know since the puppy is in his care. This puppy is 10 weeks old and you have only had it a week, this is such a shame it is so young and you obviously have gotten attached in this short amount of time. I would definitely check into the health guarantee you were given from the breeder, I guarantee they should be responsible for this vet bill. I hope everything works out o.k. the poor baby

Your dog is in the best possible hands right now, so think positive. On another note, coccidia, giardia and kennel cough are all highly contagious and are illnesses that your puppy would have been sold to you with. In other words, contracted at the breeders! In fact, coccidia and giardia are both something that a pup would contract from the ground it is living on. Coccidia is a parasite that is usually found in raw meat and is easily spread from dog to dog. Giardia is a parasite found in stagnant water. Your pup is on all the right medications. I really hope it's not pneumonia, my friends pug just survived a very bad case. Please let us know your pup's progress.

Yes, Summer, that's the one. It mimics kennel cough , but the death rate is high . It's spred more since the evacuation from Katrina.

We just got back form the hospital, they took X-rays and as of now he does not have pneumonia but they put him on Zithromax just in case he is starting to develop it. He still did not want to eat so they feed him through a syringe and has has held down the food so far. He is very weak and drepressed; he can not even stand or hold up his own head, but the whole time he was awake and very alert. We are just hoping for the best.

It probably seems crazy to everyone that we are so upset considering we only had him for 5 days, but we got very attached being home with him the whole time.

I asked about the flu that is going around and the vet is going to look more into it. They would have to swab his throat and send the results to some research center; I guess they have not given a way to test to the vets yet. Thanks for the help!
