    Sit from a Down

I use hand signals with almost all of my commands, which my dogs tend to respond better to than a command alone. For sit I bring my arm up to my shoulder and for down it is the opposite. It seems to help for my dogs to have a visual. And you may need to use a little gentle guidance as stated...

    Training vs. Genetics

So can I ask, what is the difference between a well bred dog and a poorly bred one?

    Training vs. Genetics

Sorry to disagree, but if Chows are not properly socialized, especially with their litter mates, learn no social skills they are very much aggressive, protective, and territorial. They were bred to protect kings. Huskies on the other hand are very gentle, well socialized dogs and are never...

Trainging a dog to run with you.

My dog is hard to walk, pulling and such. A halti works great for walking. But when running I'v always just let him run in front of me. He likes to stop and start quite a bit, but I've gotten used to and just watch his body language. Works for me.

    Training vs. Genetics

I have a almost purebred Husky with about 1/8 of Chow in him. He was taken from his mother at four weeks old, and placed with large agressive dogs and an abusive home until we got him at six weeks. Not knowing any of this info at all. He had agressive, dominant, possive and territority issues...

    Head Halter success!!!

Yes, I learned the most important thing was the fit had to be just right for it not to come off. It is a real pain in the a** to get right, but once done, there's no need to adjust. And yes the Halti brand is excellant as it has an extra clip in case they do slip out. I had to buy the Walmart...

    Head Halter success!!!

I have always been horrible at teaching a dog to walk on a leash and being consistent with it. With that said, I'm tired of being jerked, pulled, and dragged anywhere and everywhere. lol My body just can not take the abuse any longer. I flirted with the head halter idea for almost 8 months...

    Fear of a Brush

Thank you Athebeau, I really appreciate your insight as I am sure half of it is in my body lauguage. Sometimes I just jump right into it not really thinking of him, just that it's got to be done. And the last time I did it must have really scared him. I tend to give baths the same way though...

Big dogs or little dogs, do you prefer one over the other?

I love and respect all dogs, but my husband and I are definetly large dog lovers! The bigger the better! Right now I have 6 husky/labs ( parents and 4 kids) all house dogs all at about 75-80 pounds. I would love to own a Great Dane and a Bloodhound, my husband would like to have a St. Bernard...

    Fear of a Brush

I have a husky/lab mix who has lab fur, but has a thick husky undercoat. He's been back with us (he is from one of our litters) for almost 4 months and was abused and I doubt was ever groomed. He let me brush him the first couple of times, but now he runs when he sees the brush. He will do...

    fence climbing - help please!

I would also agree with recall, but I would work with stopping her before she gets to the fence. Like when you notice she is even starting to think about it. Is it possible to work with her in the fence in area, with no other dogs around? Letting her run around and interrupting her thoughts...

How do I train my dogs to poop in one area?

I have 6 adult dogs, 4 in the backyard and 2 in the front. How can I train them to poop in one designated area? They keep their main play area clean, but there are a couple of spots they have chosen that I would like to change. Anyone know the best way of going about this? Would I do it...

Your Dogs Name: Why You Chose The Dog Name You Did

We got Silver when she was 7 weeks old. She is a black lab/husky mix, that looks exactly like a black lab, except for a small white line on her chest, hence, Silver lining. The breeder named him Hercules for being the biggest of the bunch of Huskies, so we named him Brut. He has lived up...

    Close call!

I know what you mean. I never had a problem with this one loose dog the first year we lived here and I would walk my two dogs every day. The following year suddenly for no reason at all the loose dog started charging us and there have been small confrontations. It isn't fair to me or my dogs...

Do you treat your dogs as individuals?

I have 6 dogs. A mother, father and 4 pups from the same litter who are now a year old. We orginially kept only 2, who have been bonded from the start. Though they have different personalities and needs. Then we had 2 of the pups returned, (the families were related so the 2 pups grew up...

    Help for fighting dogs

Thanks to everyone for tips. I've been keeping them sepersated outside and rarely have problems in house. Though I keep a close eye at all times. And I've been only letting them out together when I'm out with them and have some constructive play or training. It has been working out and is...

    Help for fighting dogs

The father is not fixed and everyone else is. I used to walk/run with each of them at least 2-3 miles, but I am unable to do that at this time. I'm trying to find a treadmill to help with that part of the load. But this was going on whether I ran with them or not. I work with clicker...

    Help for fighting dogs

I have two mostly huskies mixes, one father (2 years) and son (11 mos.). They are the only 2 males in house. They can and do play together, but it will eventually lead to a fight these happen mostly outside. Most of the time it is a lot of noise and when I walk out to them they stop. Though...

Angel -A Survivor! *Warning Graphic Pics of Emaciation*

I once nursed a dog that was in the same state as Angel back to health after the owners wouldn't care for her anymore. She was a beautiful black lab mix. It is disgusting that people actually let this happen to such a beautiful creature. She was actually unable to eat anything. Luckily a had...
