Pretty much what sparks has been saying, but it really is a work in progress. Feel free to vent and provide suggestions. As I noted previously, I am in contact with the owners/admins and we're sharing information and trying things out.

In the mean time

I agree, I think the CAPTCHA thing going away after like, [incert number] posts & excepting members who have exceeded the chosen post number prior to the rule being erected or something to that effect is also a good idea.

I'm another one that can't decipher the words!

I can deal. I think the cat above is our IT department at work! Seriously, just turn off the computer and turn it back on and your good. Still not fixed jack.

There's a captcha system I saw once, but don't know how widely it's utilized.

Instead of words they show 5 or 6 thumbnails, and you have to click one it asks for. Like it had a bunch of animal pictures and you had to click on the dog or cat when it asked. Or carrot vs. other vegetables, etc. Something like that would be way easier to deal with and hopefully just as effective if it's an option.

ETA: something like this http://www.confidenttechnologies.com/products/confident-captcha

But why say its going to keep you from posting if it's not?
Because it does. I have problems with them as well. If it gets annoying enough it cuts down on a persons willingness to participate. Fewer participants, fewer viewers, fewer advertisers, eventually a site dies or becomes a pay to use site for a very small group.

Something like this would be great if it was in addition to toX number of posts. The Capcha in an of itself is annoying but Im sure not near as bad as having to wade through hundreds of spam posts before you could even really enjoy chaz EVERY time you log in.

Not a mod but what I gathered from Eddies announcement post is they are trying to figure that out. How to do that and if it will work and how to make it work. I think this is as new to them as it is to us.
A lot of sites already require an introductory post before being allowed to post in any other forum. pitbullforum is one of them. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, the mods here could ask those forums how its done, and who's software they use, etc. Might make things a little easier. :)

We have already discussed that option. :)

Unfortunately, we are dealing with the same problems you are. I've had the pleasure of numbers on top of numbers, letters that must be part of an alien alphabet, cause I sure don't recognize them, and fuzzy wuzzies that look like they came from my dryer. (I'm just lucky that way.) Like I'm supposed to know how to type this stuff when it isn't on my keyboard? But, I'm sure it will be fixed eventually... I know there is the audio challenge, but that might be to simple. :)

The good news...only a few spams this morning.

We could always compare captcha war stories to pass the time. :rofl1:

I miss quick reply, BUT I'm glad the captcha helps! :)

Ack. As I forget to do the captcha. It's going to take some time getting used to. :p

:rofl1::rofl1: my captcha says "gangdam safer"

But she specifically said it wouldn't keep her from posting, after posting that it will stop her from posting.

So... Can we get a like button while we're at it? LOL I keep looking for one an realize that this isn't facebook. >.<
This is possible on newer versions of vBulletin. There were concerns that like the picture threads wouldn't get as many replies and just a bunch of likes, but I think it turned out OK.

Perhaps she meant the comment as a bit of dry humor? At least that's the way I took it.

Mine says "cullage base" lol, but at least you don't need to do another one to edit, so that's one plus.

Question though: how does the spam get past the CAPTCHA thingy?

Have to be a human to pass the captcha.

There are sophisticated spam robots that read and pass captchas. Hence why there IS still spam popping up to the mods. Might be less than before but it's not a perfect solution.

In fact many places would say it's not even really a good solution. But I've probably read too much on anti-spam procedures having had an old crappy proboards account that attracted spammer attention...

I've seen sites ask a bunch of random and easy questions in order to join and register, such as "What animal has four legs and barks?". I'd imagine it foils spam bots.

reqnts apoplectic

I think what she meant is that it would probably lessen her posting quite significantly. And I'd imagine it will lessen some people's posting quite significantly. Maybe not so much the really 'established' people but especially newcomers. I have to say if I joined a forum and found out it required a captcha every post, I wouldn't stay.

I'm just going to start titling my posts with the captcha.

Oh this is irritating. TBH, I preferred sifting through the spam. I posted my first post since this went up a few minutes ago and it took three tries and somehow my post got deleted in the process.

If this sticks, my posting will probably decline. Especially when it comes to quick comments in the picture section, etc. It's just not worth the time to have to refresh the page three times to make the captcha work just so you can write "cute, love your dog!"

A big frowny face here with regard to the captcha update. :(

They've already said they're trying it and accepting feedback. For every bit of spam we saw, the mods saw TONS more. It was becoming a fulltime job for them to remove spam. This moves the spam aside for the moment and helps the mods focus on helping the owners improve the forum further.

I believe they've already taken other suggestions into account as well.

Yep, and that was my feedback.

If they manage to find something that removes the spam without the captcha, that'd be perfect. I have no suggestions, just feedback that the captcha isn't working for me. I've only tried a few posts since it's been in place and each has taken a few tries.
