Sadie is our 9 y/o Golden Retriever. shes always had problems with hotspots. She has been put on pretty much every type of dog food out there. Now, shes on hydrated chicken and buffalo meat. Her skin and coat has been 10X better, but shes gained some weight and has gotten KILLER hot spots. They aren't on her belly, but on her tail and go around and under above her anus. its red,hot and a bit bloody. it is soo painful and scabby. I try picking off the dead scabs and putting aloe on. I gave her a bath today, hoping that will also help.

Does anyone have any suggestions? these hotspots are just soo bad and sever. she only seems to get them around her bummm.

I'd shave down the area, you can try a couple of things. Desitin (as in baby diaper rash creme) but you don't want her licking the desitin, it has zinc oxide in it..Or, I use Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray, you can get it pretty cheaply thru KV Vet Supply. It contains tea tree oil mixture and works well.

I'd definately shave down the area, keep it clean, Desitin can be applied 2+ times a day. Should be soothing as well as healing.

Hope this helps

I had one Golden who had terrible reaction to flea bites... this was before Advantix or Frontline. A dime spot one day would be the size of a fist the next. It's important to cut away the hair, and dry out. Treat as soon as possible !

I own a horse and I brought home new creme to put on her hot spots.
I've been lookin' at it today and its no longer dead and dry, its red,hot and looks like it actually may heal. I can tell that she liked it today(sometimes when shes outside, she likes to lick anything that sore :( ). I put on Hibitaine on it and she didn't touch it. before I went to bed, I put on this healing cream for cuts, scrapes, etc. that i also put on my horse(its put on our human babies when they get hurt).

I haven't putt anything on her yet. I will cut the area tomorrow.

Don't put any cream or anything that is going to moisten it on a hot spot. You want it DRY DRY DRY.

I clip hair, and if they are really goopy, I make a solution of betadine and warm water that looks like strong tea. Then I gently bathe it with this until all scabbing and goop is gone.

Then I gently blot it dry, and dab it with Listerene. Once that's dry, I put medicated gold bond powder on it.

Since I have been a raw feeder I have not had a SINGLE hotspot on a dog.

Not one.

Sadie is on a semi-raw food diet. We just need to hydrate it before we feed it to her. I have a hard time with feeding her bones, neck, etc. Shes been on pretty much everything. This food we are giving her now seems to be great for her skin and coat(minus this 1 yuckky huge hot spot). She seems to be happier and more energetic, but makes her pack on the weight pretty fast. I looked at it today(the hot spot) and it looks ALOT better. its dry and starting to look like its healing very well.
