So for the past couple days, I have been smelling this foul odor in the kitchen. I didnt know what it was, so had the front door open, just airing out the smell . But it was particulary strong tonight, so I was going to do some dishes, and then go on a hunt for the smell.

Well I start washing dishes, and taking the dishes out of the dishwasher, and they are still dirty and I notice they have some yellow-ish water in the bowls. So I am trying to figure out just what the heck is going on.. when to my horror, I see the dishwasher is full of dirty, yellow mucky water.

So of course, get on the phone to my aunt with the WHAT DO I DO!!! phone calls she has come to love I'm sure. So reset the garbage disposal, it wasnt even working when she had me first flip the switch. Just spend the last 10 mintues scooping out all the water. I managed to get most of it, and she said call her back and now she isnt answering lol. She had said earlier when I finished getting the water out, to run another load to see waht it would do, but Im kinda paranoid to do it.... I dont wanna have to do it again haha.

So my question, did the dishwasher have anything to do with the disposal not working, but then working once I reset it?

Oi vey

That's basically what happened to me ..... for over a month I was rewashing my dishes in standing water !!! ( Got sick too ! ) . Son was here over Christmas 2 years ago and installed a new disposal for me . The first thing the dishwasher repair man asked me was had a new disposal been installed . Mike had missed the instruction to knock out the " breathing " hole ! So with one tap to the area with screw driver and hammer and $75., I was in business . Thanks Mike !!! I've put in 2 myself and never missed doing it ! I ran a rinse with bleach and then rewashed all glass and dishes used ! Add: You really shouldn't have to scoop out ... reset disposal and put washer on the drain cycle . It could be your pump too .

Oh crap, no it doesnt have a drain issue.

But just learned that my aunt wasnt using her dishwasher... all by hand.. so maybe something is up. Crap.

Oh well, hand washing never hurt anyone.

I dont beleive so.... it would take long to go down, but then it went down, then I ran the disposal and some water, and it seemed to go down ok.

*sigh* I need to marry a plumber/electricial/mechanic all in one so he can fix everything. LOL

Try the dishwasher again on rinse and see what happened . You should hear the pump while draining ..... run the disposal at same time and see what happens .

I tried it on just a regular rinse cycle, and it didnt add anywater, but the little bit of standing water didnt go anywhere.

Will try to do it again while running the disposal and see what happens tomorrow, well tech. later today

Sounds like a job for... Percussive maintenance.. Louie's answer to everything, if it doesn't work, hit it with large heavy hammer and see if that works.. ;)

You need to rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Your filters are probably clogged. Take them out and clean them.

I do wash the dishes before I put them in there.... they had like a dirty film around them.

Where are the filters located?

You have to lift the blade on the bottom and you will see them under there. It is a pretty NASTY job!
