My insperation was from my first dog and first Westie Maddie. She was just amazing and was what a westie shouls be in every aspect. She was just amazing.

When it came to CC's it was more of researching guardian breeders and coming across them. I did extensice reasearch on them and then decided that they were the right breed for me. looks wise, temperment wise.

And all the CC's I have met I have fallen inlove with.

So hopefully coming soon will be a CC puppy :)

Alfred Payson Terhune. I read all of his books at an impressionable age and fell madly in love with collies. Not that I'd ever actually met one, but I had a mental image burned into my brain.

When I was finally able to get a dog, I worried that collies were too much dog for a neophyte. So I got a sheltie instead and loved her madly for 15 years. She was everything a collie could be, only better---in my (totally unbiased) opinion, anyway!

rd's eve :)

the pit bulldogs because of a sweet cream-colored pit bull named peaches who was dumped off at the boarding kennel i worked in during college. she was a wonderful dog- everything a pit bull is supposed to be. the kennel owner wanted to take her to the shelter after the time we were legally required to keep her was up, but thankfully another kennel worker knew somebody who was interested in taking her, so she got a home.

I love his books!! Though I have to admit I already had a love of collies and my love for his books came from that rather than the other way around, LOL.

We had a collie when I was younger. My sister moved out and got a sheltie because she lived in an apartment and wanted "the apartment collie"... then she got another one. They came with her when she moved back in, then left with her when she moved back out.
Then came Auggie. And Auggie is so different from her dogs. Don't get me wrong because I love love LOVE both of my sister's dogs. But Auggie is something else entirely. So I suppose it was sort of a mistake, an accident. I didn't realize how much I would truly love the breed until I actually got "into" the breed.

I still love collies but I'm not positive if I will have another one. I like the sheltie temperament an awful lot.

I was obsessed with service dogs from the first time I heard about them, I think I was in elementary school. So I found a list of all the dogs that are used as service dogs - labs, goldens, GSDs, standard poodles, collies - and knew I had to have one of those breeds. The collie was my favorite.

Then I saw Lassie.... and hated her, LOL. All she does in that whole movie is bark! It was so irritating! So I kind of shelved the collie thing.

When I was finally able to get my own dog, I was living in an apartment and knew I likely would for a long time, so I looked for a sheltie.... and couldn't find one with the temperment that I wanted (basically just quiet). But I found Luna and fell in love.

A few years ago, I got to train a smooth collie service dog. One of the first days I worked with her, I took her on an outing to Petco, because I wanted to see if she was reactive to other animals. I was particularly concerned about the birds, so we carefully went up to the cage with all the parakeets in it. The dog looked at the birds, looked back at me, grinned and winked, and then *bonked* the bird cage with her nose. The birds went crazy flying everywhere, I rolled on the floor laughing, and I swear the dog was laughing with me. That's when I knew I HAD to have a collie of my own. ;)

I got into shelties similarly. I wanted a collie so bad but was only allowed a smaller breed. So we got our first sheltie. then another, then another. I actually MUCH prefer shelties to collies, they suit me much better. So it all worked out in the end. :)

Ella.

I wanted a dog SOOO when Ben and I moved in together. I wanted an english bulldog, so i started researching the breed. Found it wasn't for me because I wanted a dog that had the ability to go on longer walks. So, I started researching OEBs. I started questioning that breed for me, though, and read on another board about adopting, so I started looking into shelters via google.
I searched "Chicago animal shelters" and came up with Furry Friends in Chicago.
I started looking over their dogs and found them to mostly be pit bulls.

Then I found Ella on the site.
That was it.
I wanted to meet her sooooo badly. I wanted that dog. SHE was going to be my new dog, and i just KNEW it.
I talked with Ben, researched the breed, and finally got the ok to fill out the application.
We met her, and took her home that day.

So, yeah. She was the reason I started loving pit bulls.

Interesting post.

I've never heard of Paps until we were out in Hyde Park one day with our Cavalier and a really old lady had this little black and white fluffy dog in her arms. We went to pet him and she told us that she was deaf and this dog helped her out in day to day life.

We were pretty surprised that a little dog could do so much but we moved on and forgot about Paps.

When I was looking for my own dog, my mom gave me a couple of rules, has to be small (less than 20 lbs), non-shedding, and something else that I can't remember at the moment. So randomly I was flipping through the intelligence of dogs rankings online and saw the name Papillon and then remembered that little dog we saw.

I knew from meeting tons of small dogs in our area that I wasn't a huge fan of toy breeds but after I read the description of Paps they seemed to fit me pretty well! Couple of months later I got Nia and now I can't live without at least one Pap!

Before I got a dog I never really thought about what breed I wanted, I just wanted a dog in general, but I always dreampt about beagles and GSDs.

Then a relative dropped off a Rottweiler puppy at my house and I was content for 7-8 years until I really wanted an agility dog. That's when I met Popeye, a CRAZY little JRT that would jump and do flips in my arms. Suddenly we had three JRTs that turned out to be nothing like the dog I wanted, lol.

My dad always had black lab mixes growing up and he told me that we could only get another dog if it was a Lab or Lab mix and if he approved (since we already had 4). So when we stumbled upon Jack at an adoption event I made my dad meet him, and he couldn't say no!

Now I'm on the search for MY breed, and I haven't found it yet.

I'm not sure I have a breed for me quite yet. I want another Jackson, LOL. He's a breed on his own, haha... no, really, he's like nearly my ideal perfect dog. And he's not like any other Yorkie I've ever met so I can't really say Yorkies are my heart breed. He does seem to fit the descriptions of Silky Terriers to a tee and I can say that I most likely will get a Silky in my lifetime. Jackson is my first dog on my own so I'm sure that all future dogs will be compared to him in a way.

Now as a kid, I was obsessed with dogs. I had this dog book with all the breeds listed in it and some pics and descriptions and I studied it and studied it. Anything dog-related (movies, books, toys, etc) I had to have it. German Shepherds were the first breed that I was like "I HAVE to have one!" I was about 9yrs old when I first spotted a GSD and could not stop talking about one. We got Sadie, a GSD (from a bad breeder) when I turned 10 and she was "my" first dog even though I was so young. And every time I see a GSD now, I'm just like envious. I cannot wait until the day I can have a GSD again. So maybe they will be my breed. I love their loyalty, I think they are absolutely gorgeous and regal looking, I like their 'aloofness' in a way, just everything about them.

Interesting. I know of an organization that breeds paps as hearing dogs. Most organizations that train hearing dogs use service dog washouts from their own breeding programs, or use dogs from rescues/shelters, so it's very unusual for an organization to breed dogs specifically to do hearing work. How interesting that it's the same breed as the one you fell in love with. :)

I grew up with a Mix of GSD's Rotties and all around Mutts and a Herd of Boston Terriers (mom was a breeder). When I was 15 I left home and was dogless and ended up with a Cat LOL. When I was 18 my then Boyfriend presented me with Bree she was a Greyhound/GSD mix and was only of the goofiest sweetest Dogs ever. When I left P.A and moved to Chicago it was just me, Bree and The Cat. My mom called me and asked if I could take one of her rehomes, Enter Chad...and Deron They came home the same day and were less then a month apart in age. Chad was a Boston Terrier and Deron was a Yellow Lab. 2 Months later Deron passed away, and 8 months later I brought Roxie home and moved back to home.

A LOT of people seem to think Bostons are my breed but honestly when Roxie Passes I won't get another one I don't want another Boston, I loved Chad and I love Roxie but No Boston's are not for me.

My breed is the Catahoula Leopard dog, that is my heart breed and some day I will own a Purebred one from my mentor and a Wonderful breeder. But for now I am content with my Kowalski who is belived to be at LEASt have Houla.

For boxers, I just think they're ****ing adorable ;) I've worked with a lot in the clinic and they're nice dogs. Gavroche as an individual dog was kind of a weird, unlikely chain of events, but I'm sure glad it happened! I don't think I will be sticking with boxers as a breed, however, though I may have one in the future. They're great dogs, they're just not the best fit for me.

Collies...I hadn't even considered collies until Romy told me about Logan's breeder...heck a collie **** near tore my lip off a few years ago, but I also dogsat for a collie that was the sweetest dog in the world (and she may have played a role in getting excited over the idea of a collie). I saw Amos and knew that this time it was going to work. Turns out Amos didn't work but Logan (same litter) did. When I talked to the breeder she told me Amos would not be a good fit for what I was looking for, but Logan would be a very good fit. And she was right. Logan was not technically supposed to be available, but things change, and here he is laying next to me :) Turns out it seems like collies are a VERY good fit for me, and I most likely will be sticking with them. I am already starting to form an idea of what I want to do with the breed in the future when I someday start breeding them (CEA/PRA/MDR1 clear smoothies with herding instinct that are suitable for service work).

Koolies - Traveler. Definitely Traveler. I <3 that dog. And the fact that I really want a Collie and a Coolie that are the same color just to mess with people's heads :rofl1: I still have a lot of research to do on the breed, but I will definitely have one some day. I don't think I'll be breeding them or that they will be "MY" breed, but I do want one and I think they'd still be a good fit for me.

I think with herding dogs in general it's because I was raised with GSDs. I didn't realize how much I missed herding breeds until I got Logan. There's something about them that just clicks with me. I would possibly even consider a smooth BC some day, and I didn't use to be a BC fan by any stretch (though the smooth coat is a requirement... a fluffy BC would be a deal breaker without a doubt, whereas with a collie collie I would deal with a rough coat if it was the right dog, though I prefer smooth by a long shot).

So happy I made this thread, it's been really neat reading all of these.

Sit Stay, I laughed at yours with True Blood. I remember watching that with a friend and us going "That is a really good looking dog! Is that an English Shepherd?"

:rofl1: We have to figure out a way to meet so he can bounce off of you and you can see if you still want one!

Since I haven't really been able to 'pick' my dog, I'll just say what dogs are the inspiration for the breeds I want to own in the future

Lab: My team mate has the softest nicest lab I have ever met. I sued to think they were all obese, but her and Harleigh and Caleb have changed my mind.

Koolie: Traveler. He is such a cool dog, he sounds like the perfect fit for me when I get my own place and time.

English Shepherds: Quinn :) She got me to researching the breed, and I really want one now

Belgian Malionois ****: Basically each one here. They sound like a dog I would get later on, once I have more experience with dogs like that.

**** I just botched the name up horribly...sorry guys :p

LOL Linds, no way! You're good :) I really love that dog - I sent an email to the place in CA who has him and casts him as I was curious who bred him, but no reply, ugh.

Oakash, I'm so proud of Quinn that she's gotten you interested in the breed :)

Emailed again and got a reply back this time - turns out "Duffy" from True Blood is a full brother to Quinn's granddam, Gyp!

Don't feel bad - our first time to our vet they wrote down "Mellinwa" on his forms.... :rofl1:
