Know what? I think they are jealous..cause they don't have that kind of love in their life. Why do people always think that their way of living is the best and only way to go? the people who can extend their love outwards to include a larger circle around them are getting the very best of life and giving their best as well. Must be hard to see when it isn't u doing that.

I am the oddball animal lover in the family. I tolerate the furkids far better than I tolerate my human family..

My extended family doesn't particularly like my dogs, or my obsession with them. I have no idea why, especially considering that my dogs have never done anything to them. But, if they don't want to be around me because I always have a dog with me, it's not going to harm me at all.

Yep same here. Two of my sisters in the UK have their children which are always the main part of the conversation but can't understand when I want to talk about Misha....in fact one of them won't come and visit us now because she she doesn't like dogs, especially airedales which she says bite.........her loss...........

Ohh now that is another thing that irritates me.. I know people who will talk 24/7 about their kids if given the chance, but they find it ridiculous that I can talk equally as much about my dogs, which, to them are "nothing" compared to raising children..

Well, if that's nothing, I like it. I prefer dogs to kids.. The most annoying thing a dog can do to me is bark. Kids.. uggghh.. LOL. :D (I do like most kids, but they just can't compare to dogs.)

I am so glad to find out I am not alone in the fact that my family won't come to see us because of my furbabies. These are our children and if my family can't except that, then its their loss. My in-laws on the other hand are animal people, my mother-in-law keeps pestering me for a picture of her grandpups. I think animal people are the nicest people because we get so much love from the animals that we just can't keep it to ourselves. So for those of you who have family that won't except your furbabies, tell them that if they want a relationship with you, then they have to except your little ones as well, I did and I am much happier.

i think it is your corner of the world, and it is your responsibility to make it suit you, not them,,,,,,if you want to fill yours up with love i think it is a wise choice..has any one watched the wife swap show? They did a military/peace rally type swap..last week.i would love to have them put a non teenager..non dog lover here.she would run out screammmmmmmming all the way! Actually last week's show was the best one i have seen where people really did learn to open up thier minds and find that their way was not the only one to exist on the planet and that maybe there is more to life then what they have believed is the "right" way. I use to dislike the show until i saw this episode.

People are always ragging on me because I love my dogs, and all pets so much...even my mom tells me to relax every now and then...I do get offended..because everyone has their own passion in life...and it just seems like everyone is always talking about their kids...like I give a poop about how many diapers you changed today!?!

I'll probably have kids one day, but its not a big deal..people have kids all the time and I don't see why everyone seems to be pressured....and if you don't, its like your some kind of weirdo? I see young mothers spending hours talking about how their kid learned to make chocolate chip cookies? WOOoo..big whoop de doo dah...*rolls eyes*

I hope society changes its point of view sooner than later because its becoming annoying. I just have the fact that there are so many people that don't like dogs or even hate them..its sooo offensive..but if you ever said anything like "oh I'm not too fond of children" they'd send you to a nut house..lol

I'll be honest..I'm not a kid lover myself...maybe its because I'm only 20 and never had to deal with them..but I just don't feel comfortable around kids...the ones living in my building, for example...are ALL...too noisy, messy, and whinny...one came up to Messina and started poking the poor dog in the eye while the mom just stood there and laughed..I thought to myself...like uhm..put your kid on a leash! *no offense to anyone that has kids! Just feeling rantish today...:(*
I hear you sister! ;)

When I was growing up my mother ran the daycare in the home..I was never,,but never,,but never going to have children..until i was told that i just might get my wish..then i changed.. I was one of those terribly obnoxious young mother's who could tallk about nothing but how wonderful my child was..i lost a good friend because of it..then i got a bit older, my children were a little less dreamy, more trouble, and effort, i still loved them, but the honeymoon was over, and i envied the free life of so many of my friends that did'nt reproduce, i learned a little about tact and talked about other things when i had the chance to visit outside of my family..my best friend had a baby at this time and it wasn't suprising..she talked of nothing else for about 5 years...this time i understood..you have to be like that to keep from running into the night..mother nature was very smart making a mother have eyes for no one else, it all came in the protect and care mode of living..after awhile..she too came back to earth. She loves her children as much as ever, but now her world can surround other things besides a baby. Now she talks about her dogpark, and her work, i love her now, as much as then..and i learned a little bit more. We love our dogs, but maybe it is like a young mother..we are all in the care and protect mode since our dogs are mentally the age of a child for quite sometime, plus we know that they are a gift of the gods that will not be with us for but a blink of the eye...and are focus is there. because it makes us (and them) happy. I never forgave my father for having no interest in my life, my letters were curt and purposely dull. I tried to inflict the pain on him that his disinterest had done to me..i doubt it served any good but i would do it again anyway because he was just that way and it gave me a slight bit of personal satisfaction.
There should be something in all of this to learn from..but i will be danged if i see it clearly..if anyone else does..maybe they can tell me.

I dont know if they do talk about how neurotic I am with my "precious-can-do-nothing-wrong-Yorkies" (haha) or not but I dont care. I know my father and my mother in law both have framed photos of my two dogs with the rest of the framed photos of their human grandkids. I think my brother and his kids are a little jelous though, I spoil my dogs more than he does his own children.

I don't know if they do or not - they wouldn't have the nerve to tell me if they did. They all know I'm perfectly capable of never being bothered with them again
Same here! :D

When I was a child my mother was (and still is) director of a day care. Naturally I hated kids, never wanted them or anything to do with them. Now that I'm older I am lead teacher in a toddler room (kids eighteen mos to 3yrs old), go figure. I do consider that the best form of birth control! :p lol
So OF COURSE all I talk about is dogs! I'm 100% DONE dealing with kids by the time 5oclock rolls around. The only good thing about being lead teacher is I can have pet week and bring Carly into work with me. Not Maddie, because like me, she doesnt like kids that well (lol!)
My mom once called me obsessive about it. I just laughed and kept talking about my walk with Maddie  They whole family just kind of deals with it in a nice way, because they know there's no way I'll stop. When they're tired of hearing about it after failing to change the subject they'll call someone over and say "Don't you have dogs?" I get excited and it all starts with "ooo what kind?" as the original person runs away... hahaha
So, obviosuly you guys are Not alone!

Yes, my family thinks I'm nuts. Sometimes they'll either give me "signs" to shut my mouth or tell me they aren't really interested at the moment (or both). The only person in my family I can really "talk to" about animals is one of my older sisters who is also an animal freak (she has eight dogs, eleven to twelve cats, a rabbit, rats, fish, etc.). Not only does she understand me 100% when I'm speaking of training methods and rare diseases and things like that, but it seems like she really cares and listens. Sometimes it just hurts because it feels like I can't talk to the rest of my family about one of my greatest passions in life. :(

You all make me appriciate my mum more than i ever did before..when it came to the animals she never said a word about it.she critizied a great deal of things, but this she left untouched. .she really understood that i couldn't be me without them..when i brought something home, she made room, if it was hurt, she helped nurse it. When i grew up, a single parent, and hit poverty straight in the face, she never critizied my having a dog even when i had to borrow money. I do not think a single other person in my life has ever completely understood. I will tell her about this tomorrow.

So what if you love your dogs? A lot of people on this forum do. Or better yet, a lot of people all over the world do. And if she doesn't like it, that's her problem, it's not like you HAVE to send her pictures or communicate with her. I think she's a little rude. But anyway, good luck on this topic.

My Mom was exactly the same way about the animals, SMKie, as was her mother (Nanny). Nanny even had a wild cardinal that would perch on her shoulder and go in and out of the house with her. There was a time when we were sooooo broke - long story - and we must have eaten peanut butter sandwiches for a month at least. Got to the point we were grilling them just for variety. And I never want to see another bowl of pinto beans as long as I live! But Purdue, my GSD and our cat, CJ always had dog and cat food. There was never any question of anything else happening. They depended on us to take care of their needs and that came first.
