It is that time again, our neighborhood has already started in with the random fireworks.

Phoebe is a weirdo that gets excited over them, she wants out desperately. The very last time she joined us outdoors for anytype of fireworks, she retrieved a smoke bomb which left her GREEN down the whole front (which is white normally) luckily she didn't burn herself, and she jumped after a bottle rocket and NEARLY made the catch. NOW she is always left indoors or kenneled.
She is pacing up and down the hallway whining right now because someone is outside setting off little firecrackers.

Orson on the other hand is hiding under the desk looking at ME to make it stop!

How do your dogs handle this time of year?

Sirius HATES fireworks. They scare the beejeebees out of her. She's never even been hurt by one thank god its just the loud noises she's afraid of and the bright lights. Whenever she hears them she growls and barks. She shakes an awful lot when they go off and stays really close to me.
I always pull the blinds and turn on the radio or television loud so its harder to hear them and I just pet her a lot and tell her not to worry and its ok.
She just has a really big fear on them. Even if there are fireworks on the tv she shakes and barks and comes over to me. Or even anything that sounds like one.
Since I had Sirius I dont like fireworks. They stress her out too much and its so hard sometimes to reassure a dog that everything is ok..

Milo is ok with them. Benji barks sometimes, but nothing too crazy.

However, my first dog, Cody, was PETRIFIED of any loud noises (thunder, fireworks, etc). He'd be allowed to sleep in bed with us (which he never was), and when he got older we actually had to sedate him mildly for fear he'd have a heart attack.

Max never responded to them but I have to tell about one time on the beach. Down the cape, the beach that I go to allows dogs off leash which is fine they all behave well. Well on the 4th of July they have a HUGE firework show on that beach and some stupid people thought they would bring their dog, off-leash during this in the pitch black. Well the bulldog got away from his owners at some point but LOVED fireworks. Loved them so much he tried to eat them before they went off. The people would light them and he would run up to them and try to grab them. The people who lit them went to grab him but they didn't want to get blown up so they couldn't get in close. This dog came SOOOO close to being killed like 20 times but people called or scared him off before it happened each time. Finally someone grabbed him but they were not his owners and he had no collar so he was able to wiggle away from them. He went for three more before his owners came with his leash. All I could think of the whole time was it going off and his little body exploding everywhere. I came very close to tears. Some people

Thats terrible. You would think that if they really loved their dog then they would risk theyre lives for the dog. I know I would for my pupper.
Ive heard some really sick stories about dogs and fireworks, like people attaching them to dogs and stuff...eugh its just to horrible to think about..

Maddie couldn't care less. She would go with me to watch the fireworks if I would let her. The noise or the crowds don't bother her.

Missy on the other hand... paw..? Will howl and bark the whole time. Drives me crazy!! I don't know what we're going to do this year... :(

Whiskey goes and watches them with us and really enjoys the show. We have know idea how Kahlua will act yet but so far she is as fearless as he is.

Mine were fine ... as pups I'd take them out to oooooooo and awwwwwwwww and made a game of it with treats . This will be my first with Ollie ..... Sirens and car honks scare him to death .... he may have been in a wreck at one time ( found loose on the streets ? ) When just with me , he dives in the front seat and hides . When Barb was with me , she comforted him ... he lay on the floor in the back seat and she said he was soooooo scared ! Poor baby ! I'll go outside with him the 4th and see how he reacts and go from there . I'd rather get dogs used to them than add to their fear with my reaction .

Tosca didn't pay much mind to the noise last year but that could change now that she's older. She's definitely not afraid of thunder at all, so we will see.

I dont know about Verde.

As long as BD is outside with the people and dogs he is fine.

New Years my neighbors dog kept hiding under my van while their other dog attacted the fireworks multi launcher, she managed to singe half her hair off.

Same neighbors different party, they got a mortar and when Andy dropped the first round in 3 dogs had to see what he dropped in the tube!

Fireworks is always fun at my house. I have clients who board just for the night, if they're going out. some who are here for a long vacation. We generally do a group play hours beforehand and a meal well before the evening activity starts. We have some dogs sent to us with meds (Acepromazine, and some just Benadryl.) We play a t.v. in kennel by 8 pm and monitor any excessive barking. If I have one severely effected by fireworks, they come up to the house to the family room and watch a movie with my dogs and I.

Wally sleeps through it. This will be Teeny's first fourth of July, but she isn't bothered by the vac or the lawnmower, or the blasting at work (we work across the street from a rock quarry) so I don't think it will bother her too much.

Molly is fine with them...she's put up with them for 10 years, lol.

Lucy's not afraid of them...she just barks whenever she hears them. But she barks at every noise she hears, anyway.

My sister's dog, though...she runs to her crate and refuses to get out if she hears fireworks, haha.

Ripley doesn't care, which I find really odd considering he's noise sensitive. I still keep him away from them because there's no need to subject his ears to that sound.

Dakota doesn't like them. Someone once fired a gun near him and he went nuts, and since then every time he hears a gunshot or fireworks he goes crazy trying to find the source.

I'm not sure about Eve, she hasn't been exposed to them yet.

I know of a really good dog that was competing at a 3 sheep dog trial, when fireworks went off that night and really scared the hell out of him.

Ever since he is only half as good when competing at trials.

makes you think that when dogs are about that fireworks should be banned

Cheers

At our old house we were able to see three different fireworks displays. There was one from the City, one from the County, and one from these people that always had a monster blowout party and hired somebody to do a display. Daisy would come outside with us on leash and watch the fireworks. The only ones that scared her are those kind that are real high pitched and SCREAM across the sky. The kind we set off in the driveway kinda freak her out too, so we would leave her in the house for those. I don't remember what Benji did last year. I don't think he was scared though.
