when you stick your hand down his throat to pull out a bone. Ewww is was so gross.

Brutus was chewing on a rib bone...he started coughing, gagging and drooling like crazy. I tried the Heimlich Maneuver on him...that did not work, I just couldn't find the right spot...nothing would fly out. So, I had no other choice but to stick my hand down his throat, or try to get him to the vet before he choked or croaked.

I chose the hand down the throat option first. It worked, I got the bone out of his throat. Poor baby, he was so calm. Roxie and I were both nervous wrecks, she kept looking at me with those concerned eyes, and stayed by Brutie's side.

I am so proud of myself, I didn't even gag while I did it. Well, I did when I washed all the nasty stuff off my hand.

All small bones are now in the trash. I don't want to do that again, it feels really funky in there.

No it's not pretty in there, it's warm and squishy. He seems to be doing fine, he is playing with his ball right now.

He wasn't phased at all... you, on the other hand, might have some nightmares tonight!

I saty away from small object or splintery ones. My father in law had a greyhound who got a rib bone lodged in the roof of her mouth. She licked for days and days, until we realized it. By ten it had dug into the roof of her mouth so far, they couldnt remove it all. They had to leave the end in there cuz it was keeping her from bleeding to death, something about an artery in there.

Thats why you are not supp to let you kid walk with a toothbrush in its mouth.

Aint that something weird???

Keith had to pull out a bone that was stuck in the roof of the mouth of one of his dad's Labradors. The poor dog was going nuts, trying to dislodge it.

Well, I have learned from this, all old bones get thrown away. No more will be hiding in the dogs toy box.

I've pulled grass out of the back of Tira's throat. It's wet, warm and slick. YUCK! I do it to keep her from yaking the grass back up later...or having it halfway down her throat.

I had to stick my fingers down yamis throat once. He got hold of a dryer sheet. They smell good, but obviously he thought it tasted good too..

Ick.

The heimlich on a dog Brutus' size, is not easy. When he sits up he 3/4 of my height. So bending over him, he is pretty big around and trying to find the right spot...is difficult. Poor Brutus, he just sat there. While I tried to push in and up...all I could get was this sound, don't know how to explain it, but no bone flew out.

At times like this I am so thankful for a calm dog...if it had been Spike I am not sure it would have been this easy. I think he would panic, and go berserk.

Wow!

I've never had to stick my hand down my dog's throat.....Hope that never comes up for me O.O

Good on you for thinking so fast though!

I think I would've started crying, then realised I could do something about it *blush*

I think the mom instinct kicks in...all you think of is saving your dogs life...after, when they are ok...you gag and fall apart.

I've had in the past shoved my hand into so many dogs throats the yuk and slime doesn't faze me. We do what we have to do... whether giving pills or retrieving objects. Washing hands is no big deal when it comes to our dogs health.

Aww poor Brutus, he's such a good boy for staying calm and good on you for not panicking and acting on your feet.

Wow, thankfully the only time I've had to shove my hand in a dogs throat is to give them medication.

Yay for quick thinking and mom instincts!!

Wow, what a close call. =( I can only imagine how scary that must've felt! It's good adrenaline takes over in those situations!

Just an FYI to anyone... cooked bones are BAD, dangerous stuff! Any chewy can do a lot of damage if gulped, but cooked bones are in no way worth the risk. Look into raw bones for recreational chewing.

Actually it was a raw bone, but an old bone, he found it in his toy box. But, I think it was small enough it slipped down his throat. I really don't know how he managed to swallow it and get it stuck in his throat.

LOL! Welcome to the wonderful world of The Maw :D Don't know how many times I've had my hand in those maws, feeling around for something that they're trying to hide from me. Kharma's particularly adept at hiding things up in those jowls of hers. Good thing Filas are quite calm about that sort of mucking around in their mouths (by THEIR people, anyway) and seem to regard it all as a mildly amusing game. I think it really hit Charley that he'd found the right grrrrl one night when Buffy was choking on something and before he could react he saw my hand disappearing into the dark between those choppers :D
