Yesteday my puppy Sheltie 4 months of age, Tiger took a big poo poo on the bahtroom floor. When I put him back outside to clean the bathroom, he squatted down again. This time it was dropplets of pinkish fluids+some little pieces of waste. I thought it was that once so i just cleaned it up. So I took Tiger out for a walk.
Later on.. he took about 3-4 little stops in corners and did the same. Redish/pinkish fluid+a little of waste, but this time... it was more blood like than pink. He's acting really normal, eatting, playing I think hard to sleep for him. What does this mean? I just got him 2 weeks ago from out of state. I've been reading about this condition on Chazhound. However, he doesn't vomit, so maybe its different? I have not yet gotten him a vet. The vet doesn't open on Sundays. (since it's NEWYEARS tomorrow I'm guessing it won't be open tomorrow either.) What should I do at the moment?

~(I asked the breeder that I got him from. She said it might be red things that he'd ate that maded his poop red. I didn't want to e-mail her again since I've already asked many many questions already.)~

My parents fed him some chicken bone... that was because that's a traditional thing that they feed their dogs in their hometown. Idk. I never knew that. But Tiger eats Iams...

Hookworms can cause exactly what you have described.

Has your dog been dewormed or seen a vet recently?

And if he has seen a vet, what did they do?

You can rid your pup of hook and round worms by using OTC meds.....active ingredient pyrantel pamoate. And then use it again two-three weeks later.
It is a safer dewormer.

If you are unsure or the pup is acting off....then it would be best to see
an emergency vet.

Best wishes.

Edit: Also a large infestation of round worms can cause blood too....
but so can many other things. If the pup is not acting sick, I would tend
to believe worms. Just my opinion though. :)

First I have to thank you, Bobsk8 and Julie for replying to my thread! I'm 14 years old and my parents didn't really like the idea of me getting a puppy, but since I worked my way through school they kept their promise to get me one. When Tiger arrived at the airport, they just fell in love with him :) I'm new to Chazhound.

Well hmm. My breeder feeds her puppies with purina puppy chow for over 16 years. I didn't have enough time to get puppy chow, so I just got Iams. Do you think it's because I switched his food this suddenly?

I'm looking at the Health records that my breeder gave me. No Heartworm tests are recorded... guessing he'd never had it checked! I might have to pay for the check up myself. Any idea how much it will cost, Julie? :)

Honey, you dog is verrrrrrry cute! But you really should see a vet as soon as possible. Like someone already said, could be worms , could be those chicken bones not setting right in his tummy too. So get him to the vet ok?

Please do not feed him cooked bones of any kind or any chicken bones. It can be dangerous to your dog. Cooked bones splinter. I will leave it to the experts on the board to tell you more, and give you some advice on better food for that cutie pie you have.

You should stick around this board too. You can learn a lot from some of these folks like I did.

Heartworms live in the heart, so therefore would not cause blood in the stool. They come from misqitoes that are infected. So your vet would know when preventative treatment would be needed.

When someone says..."deworming" they generally mean intestanal worms.
If your pup was only "dewormed" once, at four weeks, I would guess it would be a very good possibility it could be the case. Don't worry about heartworms yet....when you see a vet just ask about preventative and when it should be started.
As for intestinal worms you can see a vet or just do a "preventative" dosage.
Like I said pyrantel pamoate is a good dewormer for hooks and rounds.
It does not effect tapeworms though. For tapes you would need something like praziquantel. Since you are unsure, I believe your best bet is to make a vet appt. :)

And since your pup is 4 months old, he also should be getting/have been getting puppy shots to prevent other diseases. Most pups are receiving their final shots at that age. If your pup hasn't had any yet... You should see a vet asap.

Good Luck,
Julie.

OH no! Tiger had pee a total of 8-9 times today! He pooped normally today at 9am. But ever since that he hadn't poop. Now its 9:40pm. Nothing. He'd only peed! I read the Chococlate dog article and they say it increases peeing, Idk if he ate chocolate. But it seems like signs that he might have.

Puppies pee a lot, I think that part is normal. :)

It sounds to me like he might have worms, or it could also be something that is known as "stresscolitis" which basically means the dog is stressed out enough it's affecting his digestive system. With a huge move and a very sudden food switch, this is a possibility. Most times stresscolitis goes away on it's own, but it's still a good idea to get him to your vet as soon as you can anyway, just in case it's worms. And for an overall check up.

Welcome to Chazhound, by the way!

Thank you for reading about my puppy's problem. :D It might be. I just freaked out for a moment. Cause he mostly does his "business" at home. He pees at home all the time. I guess hes only "POOP" trained to go outside. I took him out with my dad and he plooped a big one. His waste is normal now. Hope it'll continue to be like that! Thanks everyone for the help :p If anything goes wrong again. I'll notify the Chazhound family! :lol-sign:

Cooked bones are very very dangerous, but only the vet will be able to tell if thats the issue or worms of something else.

Oh and welcome to the forum :) In terms of food, I don't think switching food would make it really pink or look like blood? Though I would recomend visiting the food section on here and doing research about dog food. Iams is not a good quality dog food.

Tiger is awesome again! He's been pooping normally. :) He's healthy
Make sure you take the dog to the vet and have it checked out anyway!!!!! You will feel very bad if the dog has some minor thing now and it turns into something serious because a vet didn't check the dog out....
