True ... but the puppy mills will breed more ...........Uno sure is a wonderful specimen !!!
LOL and when the mill dogs look like Uno...it might be worrisome lol. But from what I have seen...if someone wants a hound that looks anything like that boy...they will need to look in the right places and with the right folks!

As has been said...it's already quite out of hand as far as rescue.

I won't take anything from his win...he did a wonderful, wonderful job out there!

Yay Uno!!! He is one handsome little hound.

I love the look of a well bred beagle. Unfortunatley most of the beagles we see around here are from BYB's or "Huntin' " dogs. They are so far off from the breed standard that they almost look like they could be a different breed.

As for it being bad news and the popularity of beagles, I don't think it will make much of a difference. They are already one of the most popular breeds. Maybe, just maybe people will see what a well bred beagle really looks like and will think about going to a responsible breeder---probably not but one can dream , can't they?
My father's hounds aren't registered with the AKC, but they are pedigreed, and they definately look that way . . . they just look rather old fashioned. So not all working beagles are 'huntin' dogs . . . however, that aside

I saw a beagle meet up recently (they happened to be occupying the dog park at the same time I was) and they were the strangest looking bunch I have ever seen. All but 1 out of maybe 20 were downright ugly (beagles . . they were mostly cute dogs). I don't mean not to my taste, I mean outright strange looking. So I know what you mean. There seem to be a lot of really poorly bred, funny looking beagles out tehre . . . they seem to rival Goldens for the breed with the most odd, of standard members.

Someone(s) out there has got to be crossing beagles with bassets because I have seen some absolutely MONSTROUSLY-SIZED beagles at the dog park. And they do look like basset/beagle crosses and are easily 30-40 lbs. And of course all obese and nearly crippled because of their crappy conformation.

I didn't even imply that.

There is a huge difference between the dogs I was calling 'huntin' dogs and the working beagles. The dogs I was referring to as the 'huntin' dogs are the backyard bred beagles that you so often see advertised as Beagle pups for sale- come from good hunting dogs, who probably have never scented a rabbit. Just advertised that way so that the pups will sell. Not all beagles will make good field dogs. Our own beagle came from CKC registered, trialed and proven parents. He on the other hand could care less about scenting. He had shown great potential as a pup, and my husband had hoped that he could be trialed as well. However when assessed by our local beagling club he did not show the drive needed to make a good sporting dog. Oh well, he makes a wonderful pet, and that was what was the most important part of adding a beagle to our family was about.
