Hey all, I was wondering if any one here has any ideas on how to keep the unrine smell down in the yard. It's supposed to rain the next few days so that will help, but I'm wondering if any one has any rememdies for their yards that they would like to pass on. Thanks in advance :)

Stall Dry. Typically under $10.00 for a 40 lb bag. You buy it at livestock type stores. It's designed to eliminate the urine smell in barns and is WONDERFUL for "dog" areas.

Speaking of which, I need to go get another bag....

Just keep in mind that something like stall dry is going to change the ph of your yard. They aren't meant for use in a 'garden' area and since stall dry contains diotomaceaus earth (not spelled correctly) it's also going to kill any insects in it's path. While that may seem good you have to remember that some bugs are good :) It's also got clay and you are expecting rain ...

Plus DE is not good when inhaled so you'll have to wait for it to settle. Not poo pooing it. I think spirit just uses it in one spot and it sounds like you want something for the whole yard which makes it more difficult.

Can you hose down the pee spots?

What do you feed? I notice a distinct difference in smell according to what dogs are fed.

I didn't know all this. But, I use it in my kennel runs. I clean them well, hose them down, then spread the stall dry. So it's going onto damp ground. To sanitize, I also use another product - I think it's call creolin - now that's poison, and I only use it once to twice a year, and I rotate what kennel runs are being used so that I can leave each treated run empty for a few days. My kennel runs aren't "lived in" by my dogs, but just there to contain them when I can't supervise or when I'm house cleaning.

Thank you for the heads up :)...There's only a few areas that they like to pee, so I'll only be using it on those spots. But because all 3 seem to pee in the same spot it gets over welming, and the snow is melting, so it's like 3 months of frozen pee all at once...blah...No need to worry about a garden, I have a brown thumb and can kill any plants on my own...:lol-sign: ... I figure it will be ok to have during the times when the smell gets to be too much during the summer months, in between the rains.

Dolamite lime that you put on lawn or any acidic soil to sweeten it. You can throw it around or use a drop spreader and then water it in a little bit. It may well be what is in that stall stuff. I don't know. They didn't have that stall stuff when I had horses.

Lime is something else you don't want you or your dogs inhaling so let it settle before you turn them out! :)

When Gunnar was young he would pee in the same spot right off our deck, all summer long. It got to be pretty overwhelming. We used lime on the spot, and it worked pretty good. You do need to wet it down like doberluv says.

I know people who like to put down the lime right before it rains or turn on the sprinklers shortly after putting lime down.
Speeds the dust settling and works it into the earth better then just letting it sit apparently...
Never tried it myself... I've got a 1 gallon thing of outdoor deodorizor... I forget the name I can check it out sometime... it works ok but it's not the greatest. It just speeds the breakdown of the chemicals producing the unwanted smells. Ammonia and such...
