I know some of you don't know of or understand the subject, for those that do and/or want to take a stab at it.. what do you think of the following abstract from my thesis? Thanks. :)

The following is a qualitative, action research study that identifies the effects of facilitated sensory integration activities in an early intervention center program in Northern California. This study is conducted by a beginner educator and focuses on a 20-month-old African American male. Using observations as a baseline, lesson plans were incorporated to foster sensory development. Findings suggest that facilitation of sensory activities leads to higher quality of involvement in all center activities, a more focused and productive free play period, and increased interest in sensory activities. Results of the study provide implications for future educators, researchers, and professionals in regards to teacher observations and teacher awareness of the importance of sensory integrated activities. Results suggest further research on the availability of sensory stimulation offered in early intervention classrooms and the understanding of sensory integration to professionals, educators, doctors, and parents.

I think it sounds great...and what an excellent topic to focus on!!!!! Not a lot of educators that I have worked with in my four years teaching have really focused on sensory integration.

I see it as a fun, exciting, and educational tool and the benefits of it are astounding! To work with a child who has autism, is non verbal, and doesn't show the slightest interest in any educational based activities light up at the sight of sensory activities and actually start to vocalize is a proud moment :) Or when working with a little guy that is off the walls bonkers calm completely down and actually be able to attend to an activity (and get something out of it) is fantastic as well.

I love sensory integration and that's a very large part of my classroom routine, daily.

Rock on, Nikki! You are awesome! Good luck with the thesis, and you know I would totally read it!

minimal suggestions:

This study is conducted by a beginner educator and focuses on a 20-month-old African American male. Using observations as a baseline, lesson plans were incorporated to foster sensory motor development. Findings suggest that the facilitation of sensory based activities leads to higher level of involvement in all center activities, a more focused and productive free play period, and increased interest in sensory based activities. Results of the study provide implications for future educators, researchers, and professionals in regards to teacher observations and teacher awareness of the importance of activities directed towards sensory motor development. Results suggest further research on the availability of guided sensory stimulation offered in early intervention classrooms is warranted; and that professionals, educators, doctors and parents would benefit from understanding the use of sensory integration, and sensory based activities. :)

Aww, thanks, Megan, Grammy and Bax.

Bax, I love your suggestions, thanks so much. When the paper is done, do you want to read it again? :D

Nikki . . . can you find a better adjective than "beginner?" that's one of those words that - consciously or not - allows most to dismiss a submission before ever reading it :(

That sounds like a great topic!! I like your abstract and I agree with Baxter's suggestions. I'm not a grammarian so I have nothing else to add there, but the content looks good. It makes me want to read the paper, anyway.

The problem with taking out "beginner" is that beginner educator is an important aspect to the paper as I talk about my successes and failures. I'll try to think of a new word, but any other word I can think of denotes the same meaning.
