Would you kick a dog attacking your dog?

I would kick whatever dog I felt necessary, to stop a fight like that... I can understand the other owner being upset in that type of situation, only because I don't like the thought of somebody kicking my dog. Even if I knew it was my dog's (and subsequently my own) fault, and necessary, the vision of somebody kicking my dog is awfully painful.

ANY dog that tries to attack my dogs will face whatever I feel necessary to stop it. What you did in that situation was IMO the right thing.

My dogs have beem attacked and I have kicked other dogs. However if my dogs attacked someone else's then IMO it is a two way street and that person would have the right to kick them which I am not comfortable with BUT that is why I do my best to keep them under control.

Yes, I would kick a dog to get it off of myself or my dog. I know a lot of service dog users who carry mace/pepper spray too. You do what you have to; the bottom line is, the attack dog's owner should have known better, and should have been watching the dogs more carefully.

With dogs as small as mine I NEVER walk anywhere without pepper spray. Kicking would be too late. But yes, I would do ANYTHING to protect them.

I have lobbed a rock at a GSD's face and connected HARD when he went for Lilly. I have pepper sprayed numerous dogs. If I am uncomfortable and they will not leave at my command, they get sprayed. I won't take that chance with such tiny dogs.

i have kicked rushing dogs, little and big. never with the intention of hurting them, just the intention of deflecting them.

I wouldn't hesitate to punt any dog that was being aggressive towards my dogs.

I think you'd have to be careful of a 200lb dog though, I know a kick to Gunnar's face will barely phase him and if administered by a stranger would most likely **** him off. A 200lb dog might laugh at you!

I would kick as well. And you are right DAB. You have to be ready. I have never had to kick a dog, but I have been in the postion to be ready to attack. This summer we were camping in the mountians and it is crown land so you can camp wherever and it is not regulated. Anyways there were these two young guys in a jeep who come up to our camping spot asking for some drugs which we had none and told them to go away. But they had these two pits loose running around and one went straight for teagan as soon as he saw she was in my arms, but luckly the owners grabbed their Pit. But let me tell you I was ready for a fight and to protect my baby girl!

Poor baby. Our first dog park visit was very civil, but they did have signs saying the call 911 for any misbehaving owners or dogs. Shame on that owner...

I've kicked my sister's dog. He's 140 St. Bernard mutt and most of the time he's calm and quiet and just wants to eat sleep and drool but every once in awhile he gets into it with Murphy (who is approx 1/3 his size). And when they do get into it....neither of them stop. The first time it happened I kicked Buddy then grabbed his tail and pulled him out of the way, which I think stopped him cuz I popped his tail - lol. The second time I had to pick Murphy up and take him out of the fence while my sister grabbed Buddy by the haunches (Murph bit through his lip that time). And this last time was actually Saturday night and I almost had a heart attack because my sister's bf reached for them and I was sure he was going to get bit.

For future reference though we've found that if you can get to their hindquarters you can pull most dogs away. You really need two people to do it and I would probably only do it to my dogs in case of a redirect. Anyone else's dog would most likely get kicked as far away as possible.

absolulty would have.
first id try a yell, but in a split moment if a dog attaked my dog (no matter hwat its size) you can put money that my foot or a large stick will be making contact with the attacking dogs body.
my dogs and my self come first.
if that means kicking an attacking dog clear across the feild, then thats what it comes down to.

Last time, I went to a dog park. Someone's dog attacked a little puppy. I never went again after that.
I can never understand how someone can bring a DA dog to a dog park. Kicking would been the least
worry for that dog. Poor baby.
I'd do whatever I needed to in order to protect my dog
Same here.

I would. I was on another forum sometime last year and said something about the 3 kelpies that always used to rush me a nd Buster when we passed their house. I used to threaten them if they got too close and I sure as hell would have kicked one of them had I needed to. Someone had a go at me about it but I would do it again. it was a quiet back road and if they got too close then Buster WILL fight and the last thing I need to be fealing with alone is a 4 dog brawl.

Honeslty, I've kicked Buster when fighting before aswell. Another dog approached him andstarted it but in the end it was Buster withthe upper hand and I wanted it stopped. I wouldn't do that again because I think I know more effective ways with him now.

About 6 years ago Bertie was attacked from behind by a German Shepherd who was off leash, he nearly lost his front leg and still somtimes limps on it. If I had been there (my granda was walking him at the time) I wouldn't have hesitated to kick it, especially since the owner didn't care and didn't attempt to stop it. I agree with corgi.

My husband and I did when Zoe was only about a year old. We didn't even think about it- it was a reaction. In the dog park (of course) a lab/pitt mix just went after her for no reason. The woman with him (we found out later she was not his owner) just stood there horrified, not knowing what to do. My husband, wearing heavy boots kicked the dog's butt hard enough to startle him for a moment. In that time I grabbed Zoe. The woman got control of the dog and leashed him. We started to admonish her, then found out he was her husband's dog, and that her husband had passed away pretty recently. She just didn't know he would react that way. Since Zoe wasn't hurt and the woman meant no harm, we just advised her to do some training with him and keep in out of the park.

But in answer to the original question- yes, in a moment and without a second thought.

Ive done it.. The first kick didnt get the 60+ lb huskey off of my keely puppy so I kicked it again until it did get off. Then I kicked the goat that was attacking BOTH of us.. I do not regret it. And I would definatly do it again.

I've never had to kick a dog but then again I'm like a pretty strong guy and I have a pretty good feeling a lot of the posters here are female.

Anyway the proper way to stop a dog fight is to step over the dog and hold it's hips with your legs real tight because that's what they use for balance and position. Just by doing that most dogs will give up because it's like trying to box without stepping into your punches or throwing a ball while sitting down. After that grab the scruff (back of the neck) with a firm grip and pull it back and (if you have one) insert a break stick into the back of it's jaw (behind the teeth) and twist so it pries the dogs mouth open.
If you're like a 90 lb woman though I can see how some breeds might be able to simply overpower you and you have no option but to strike it in some way to save your dog.

I think pulling the dog away with it's tail is also another alternative but I've never done it. Maybe pulling it away by it's tail then holding it in position by locking it's hips and holding it's scruff until you get help? I dunno.
