I'm not a fan, but that's because to me the accomplishments of a dog on paper mean nothing unless I can see the dog in action. I'm sure there would be an exception (there is an AMAZING Great Dane breeder in France, the likes of which I have never seen around here at all), but right now I'm lucky enough that my breed is pretty much only in the US (a couple in CA and England), and the best breeders of them are the ones that I work and train with every week.

As far as GSDs go I would say that there are loads of AWFUL breeders out there. My aunt and uncle have gotten screwed by two different breeders because they didn't take the time to ask me if I knew of anyone.

But there ARE some fantastic GSD breeders in the US, many of them with imported Czech dogs because like you, they became disenfranchised with the breed. As far as I understand it, unless you have an "in" quite often getting a working line GSD imported can be a crap shoot because quite often the breeders don't want the good ones to leave the country, thus sending out only their sub-par dogs. Just something to think about ;)

Very possibly. My Boone's sire is a British dog, and his breeders work and show all of their dogs, which they think is very important, and I agree. They've got some real beauties. What I'd really like to do is to go over there when they've got a litter, spend a week or two seeing how they train for the field, which is quite different than how they do it here, and then bring a pup home with me.

I plan on rescuing all future dogs, so no, unless, as someone said, you could rescue from another country.

If I was interested in breeding or getting a dog from a breeder, it's very possible.

I can't say for sure that I'm going to buy a presa, but if I did, chances are about 100% that it would be imported. I don't think there are many Afghan hound or Flat coat Retrievers locally, either, and I would probably want one or the other of those if I don't get a presa.

There are a handful of working borzoi kennels in siberia I'd be really interested in a dog from. Though, if that were to happen I'd like to visit them personally and meet the dogs and make sure I like their temperaments. Something else I'd consider, if I had a good enough bitch that I wanted a litter from, is importing semen.

FYI I see some awesome Flat coats around that were bought in Ont.. so there must be some local breeders. I see a few afghans around (a few times at the CARA meets) but they don't seem as prevalent.

are you wanting a performance presa? Juan just had pups from his PP titled bitch by Johnny's PP titled dog. both parents go back to Red Star and are titled for 3+ gen in PP.
ETA some weight pull & TT on both sides as well.

Hey M&M, you could always adopt a galgo from spain. :D Galgo rescue international brings a load of dogs over every year. The ones I have met are extremely sweet and awesome. We almost adopted one, she came from a band of spanish gypsies who didn't need her for hunting anymore. She was a galgo/podengo cross.

The weird part about that is Isabella was being fostered in AZ and that's where we almost adopted her. Then we moved to WA, enrolled in an obedience class and she was one of Strider's classmates! Talk about coincidence..lol.

One day I would really like a Pyrenenan Shpherd or a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, at this point there isn't a single dog of either of these breeds in Aus but I'd onsider importing them to own one one day. Depending onmy situation

Depends on the breed, but I can't think of any reason I would need to look overseas for any of the breeds I want. But that's just me...if I was looking for a particular line/breed, then yes, I would consider importing.

I prefer local breeders whenever possible. However, I wouldn't compromise the quality and type of dog I want. If I couldn't find what I want locally, I would go with importing.
