I'll be going to college in the fall to major in Biomedical sciences with an option in prevet. I want to become a vet.

Tattoos (and scarification) and piercings are somewhat of an interest of mine, and while I think my abilities as a vet should be what count, and am curious as to whether or not people might be turned off by visible piercings and tattoos.

Just curious, feel free to be honest if you think it would look too unprofessional, etc.

Depends on your community that you intend to intern or work in. Some communities especially with younger and more nontraditional living situations probably won't blink twice at you.

Personally I don't care what race/creed/hardware/horns whatever people have who are my vet. I just ask that they are competent, not every interaction involves selling me something I don't need, and that their office is clean. Whoever is left after that (all two of them I expect) can be my vet and my backup vet.

The vets I work with don't have visible tattoos, but one has several piercings. However, they wear exam coats at all times, so I doubt if a client would see any tattoos they did have.

It wouldn't bother me either way

My own vet doesn't wear an exam coat. He says he noticed that some dogs were so conditioned that white coat=negativity that as soon as he took it off some would relax. I think that's very interesting.

I totally could care less. I have tattoos and piercings so maybe that's why I don't mind. I love my tattoos and piercings too. Honestly... I seriously wouldn't care.

Nope. Unless they were decked out with 50 rings in their face. But I find that weird looking in any person. I mean, if they were an amazing vet, then I probably wouldn't care about that either

I don't really care what my vet looks like, as long as they are good at their job, willing to keep updated on the latest research, care about the animals and I'd appreciate a bit of people skills.

I would be a little bit hesitant in the face of extreme stuff, yes.

But non-extreme body piercing and/or tattoos wouldn't bother me.

But I'm young (er, sorta?) and I don't think the young generation is the one you have to worry about with this kind of stuff. I know my mom is still very turned off by tattoos and body piercing in someone who is supposed to be a professional despite my being tattooed and pierced.

I don't care but I think the advice about looking at your area would be best. You could potentially hurt your chances with certain types of clients.

I think you'd also have to consider who you would be partnering with, or interning with. Body mod's can influence people's opinions of you--so I'd be careful to not have anything outrageous done.
Do I care personally? I guess not--I'm not into body mod's--but don't think negatively of those who are/do. But there are plenty of people out there who DO take offense to it-so it does warrant thinking about it carefully.

Not in the slightest. I care if you know what you're doing and if you're good with animals. I have met so many 'properly' dressed vets that look nice and cleaned up, but they don't know what they are talking about and they either don't like animals or have no clue how to be around them.

Wouldn't care... Skill is what I care about when it comes to a vet!

but I don't know if I could focus on what someone was saying to me, if they had a forked tongue  I was just thinking about that.... :p lol

If the tattoos were symbols promoting hate, I would not see that vet. Of course, any of our vets could hypothetically have these sorts of tattoos in more concealed locations on their body. We would never know. But if it was in a location where I could see it, I would feel as though his/her decision to put it there speaks volumes, and would consider it my responsibility to not go to such a vet.

(I only posted this to spice things up a bit from everyone saying 'couldn't care less'...which is a good thing, by the way! :))

Good point.

BUT... if said vet was THE BEST at their specialty or whatever, and one of my dogs needed it... I probably would still go to them. But only because I would do ANYTHING for my dogs....

I wouldn't care even a little tiny bit. I love tattoos, and piercings are fine as well. The forked tongue I would be a little 'ehhh' about, but even with that if they were the best vet around I think I can overlook something like that in favor of my dog's wellbeing.
