Hey, just wondering without getting a stool tested if you can tell if your dog or cat has worms.

If the worms are bad enough then you will see round or hook worms being pooped out or vomitted up, tapeworm segments will remain around the anus.

If the dog is new, came from a questionable place, from a pound, or as a stray, is a puppy or was never dewormed before, I would just go ahead and deworm him. Otherwise do a fecal first.

To an extent yes. Heavy diahrea can be caused by worms. Sometimes they'll vomit up worms if they have a lot of them. They'll get a frog belly going on too (caused from the worms in the stomach/intestine eating the food and releasing gaseous wastes). Tape worms look like granules of rice in poo (well they're not really the tapeworms themselves, just the segments, the proglottids) and can be see by the naked eye in the feces as well as around the anal area sometimes.

Other worms are best picked up by a fecal and only show up to the naked eye in extreme circumstances (because they only shed eggs, not segments of their body).

Don't bother with most de-wormers you find at petco/wal-mart, etc. They're crap for the most part. There's a horse dewormer called Strongid that works well in dogs and cats too. Should be able to find it at a feed store.

worms are usually only physically present when your pup has an adult worm infestation.. you'll see vomiting, loose stools, dull coat etc etc.

Its best to get a fecal sample tested incase there is evidence of cysts... (eggs basically).. that way you can help stop the cycle before it starts.
