Okay, maybe I am being paranoid...

Today my new puppy got his first exam and worm-treatment (Drontal K-9). Aiden isn't acting any differently, but I just noticed that his stool is much softer and he had a bit of diarrhea.

Now I'm freaked out because even though he was normal in his exam, he's only on round 1 of his parvo shots, and I know that diarrhea is a sign.

Is diarrhea normal in dogs having just been wormed? Please tell me I am being overly paranoid...

It really is hard to say, I am not familiar with drontal k-9.

The only dewormer I am familiar with for puppies is Strongid (spelling?).

Soft stool is a common side effect of deworming, but that may not be the case necessarily.

For whatever reason "common" or "normal" in veterinary medicine is defined by 1% chance.

If it has a 1 percent chance of happening, it is considered common.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the phone and give a call in the morning to ask the vet office if there is any reason to be concerned.

Make sure the puppy stays hydrated (Parvo isn't the main culprit for death, it is dehydration... That is why they have to put all the dogs on IV fluids and just wait it out).

I'm overly paranoid about things too, so you are not alone. Just give them a quick phone call and express your concern. They should be more than happy to answer any question you might have.

I used Drontal for my adult dog---he did not have loose stool as a result. Not sure what to tell you re: a puppy. You probably want to just call the vets office and ask.

I don't know if this helps... when we brought Bender home he hadn't had any shots yet or been wormed and was 10-11 weeks old. We had him for a week before his vet appointment. Right before his appointment he got so very sick and I was so scared. He was anorexic when we got him and very scared and skiddish of everything. No doubt in my mind we rescued him (awww you should see him now).

When he got sick he had nasty diarrhea with blood in it. Soon it was what seemed to be only blood he was letting out. Now Parvo when a dog poops has a very strong smell so we knew it wasn't that because his had no smell actually but he just kept going. Than he started vomiting. He wouldn't drink. The next day we took him to the vet. He tested negative for everything even for worms. They had to insert an IV bag (I think thats what they called it) to rehydrate him. His mouth was so sticky and that was scary. They gave him two meds 1 for bacterial infection and one to help him not to vomit even though they had no idea what was wrong with him and put him on a bland diet. The next day he already seemed better and two days later everything was just fine.

So while this was scary to the extreme he did test negative but he was sick and did need to go to the vet. If I were you I would wait and see how things progress and if at all in question take him in before anything gets worse. He can still catch a nasty bug even with shots. If he has Parvo his poop would stink so bad. Thats a huge symptom.

Thanks to those who replied. I think it was an adverse effect from the medication, as his stools are back to normal now. He just farted on my lap so he probably still has some gastrointestinal issues (pew! stinky boy!!!).

If I notice any more diarrhea my vet will be getting a call right away!
