I just discovered that our new dog probably has worms. We noticed this as she pooped this morning. I will be taking her to the Vet tomorrow. Can she give worms to our other dog? Or does our other dog have to ingest something in order to get worms?
They usually spend most of their time apart.
First, you need to get the new dog to the vet and take care of the worms (which you said you are doing). Second, yes, your other dog can get the worms from your first dog. Third, roundworms are gotten by ingesting worm eggs from contaminated soil/infected poop. The same goes for hookworms, tapeworms and whipworms (as far as I can remember). Remove dog poop from back yards, use appropriate vermicides (under veterinary supervision), and have the dog's poop checked frequently in persistent cases. Do not mix wormers and do not use any wormer if your dog is currently taking any other medication, including heartworm preventative, without consulting the veterinarian.
When walking the dog in a neighborhood or park, remove all poop so that the dog does not contribute to contamination of soil away from home as well.
That's about all I know off the top of my head and from what I've heard from vets/other chazzers.
