so, we were sitting thru yet another 'work ethics' thing at work. he went on and on about ' what if you took a ( pen, paper, staples) and so on, is it wrong? is it illegal? is it a win/win situation? blah blah blah. so, does anyone else on here go thru that at your job?

like in my job, it is sales, so, if someone comes up to us from higher up and asks us to hold something, we are to tell them no, with out getting in trouble. so, what is everyone else's take on this work ethics? not just at work, but in life in general. have you ever had someone give you too much change back? or not charge you for something?

Yes, I've had someone give me too much change and not enough change- I don't win anything for taking what's not mine, so I've always been honest about it.

Went through the drive-thru atm awhile back, I took out $200, it gave me $220. I was in a hurry, but it wasn't mine! So I went back, went into the bank and told one of the women about it. She was shocked, said they've never had it happen before, but she didn't think anyone would report it if it had. Shows how respectful people are these days.

I am pretty good in those situations because people assume things baized on the way I look. I like to prove them wrong because me as a person isn't like that.

I once dropped over 200 dollars out of my pocket and someone saw it fall and chased after me through a crowd to give it back. I was so greatful

see that is what i agree with Paige, if you actually see the person, you should, in all honesty give it back to them( it comes back 10 fold some say). as for buddy, Wow,that is shocking, i have never had my atm do that ;), usually it eats mine LOL.

one time i had a lady mistake a 10 for a 20 and i bought something for 5 and she have me back 15. i took it back and let her know.

the other thing that came up was if someone was the banks, and how distrustful they are. i know a few of you who have had this problem before. and that is the main reason i do not have a bank account, dishonest people, that and to many bank robbers out, theyu only hit 90% of salt lake city ( which i live in about 40 minutes away from.)

Sometimes I'm too honest. Like one time I was trying to get gas and the "pre-authorize" at the pump was screwed up. I didn't know this until I went in to pay and get some donuts. It would have been an error in my favor, I would have gotten like half a tank free or something, but I kept trying to straighten it out. We got the gas thing figured out and they kept saying "10 gallons of gas, $20" or whatever it was and I kept going "and two donuts." "So that's *10 gallons of gas, $20*" "Plus two donuts!"

I didn't dawn on me until later that they were trying to give me the donuts for free for being honest about the gas and I talked myself right out of that one...

I worked at a vet clinic for about 5 years. As employees, we got free vet care (exams, spays/neuters) and medications were cost. Any prescriptions, shampoos, flea meds etc. were all cost and it was on an honor system. We all entered in and managed out own account transactions. A lot of employees would take stuff and "forget" to enter it into the computer. There was no real way to track what was missing so people helped themselves left and right. I never did. I have always been a firm believer in doing the right thing. It was how I was raised and it's important to me. If it's not yours and you take it then it's stealing...even if you got it by someone else's mistake. The day I quit I paid off my account which was $2000...:yikes: Needless to say, I entered in everything, lol.

That guy got bear hugged by me. Full on woo hoo jump into a strangers arm. I landed up hooking him up with my friend who he's still with so I say it worked out for him.

I'm perhaps too ethical . . .or perhaps I don't like to bother other people. For example, I am EXTREMELY fussy about pens. They need to be a certain brand, certain model, certain color. So I buy my own. I've been told repeatly that the firm will buy me whatever kind of pens I want (they'll order them). But my pen choice is expensive, and I don't want to bother the people down in supplies to place a special order, so I buy my own. Same with my legal pads, and my mouse and keyboard. I see no reason that the firm should pay for my neuroses, or that supply should have to order things just for me.

The other day we went to Walmart and we bought a big plastic tub to hold the Christmas tree. We bought several other things and when I looked at the receipt walking to the car I saw that the big tub wasn't charged. I made my fiance go back in and pay for it.

workplace ethics are to me...not taking that which does not belong to you, and representing the company in a positive light. It's pretty simple...most things at work come back to one of those things.

In life? Same deal...adding that have a strong sense of karma meaning that I seldom take, do, or cause things to happen that may bring bad things back to my door. But I am no saint,...no angel...by any means. All things have to balance out...and I try to keep my balance towards the positive.

The reprisenting the company in a positive light is an interesting one . . . I will say though, when someone at the firm (I have no idea who, nor does anyone else) forwarded an embarassing e-mail that a partner had inadvertantly sent to the whole firm to THE Biglaw gossip/tabloid site, I was pretty put out. Although what the tabloid had to say on the matter was pretty funny . . . how's that for loyalty? Airing something embassassing (but harmless, so it wasn't like informing people of something they should know) to not only the world, but all of our rival firms. Pretty much delibrately embarassing the whole firm in public (the partner perhaps deserved to be embarassed, but he was humilated enough internally) . . . yeah, I have to agree, that's part of work place ethics . . . UNLESS something dangerous or illegal is going on.

I work at a supermarket atm. If people give me too much i give it back. Good karma for when I might accidentally hand them an extra $50. Its happened before and I'm glad they've given it back.

When someone drops something (even money) and I see I'll give it back no problem, I don't expect the same but I do hope for it and sometimes I'm rewarded with kind people when I drop money and don't notice.

I won't track someone down if they drop money though and I don't see who did it. And no, I'm not going to turn money into any kind of lost and found type thing. Not unless it was a lot of money, otherwise their misfortune is my lucky day, sorry.

If a cashier gives me too much change, you bet I'll say something as long as I catch it myself. I know if they are short on their till at the end of the day too much they can get into trouble as well, though it was their fault in the first place. But still, a few cents isn't worth it to me. If I get too little change, of course I'll say something, as long as I catch it myself. I've had a cashier have someone yell across the store because they gave me too little cash (by like $5) and I didn't notice because I was in a rush.

As far as finding/giving back items, sometimes I will sometimes I won't. Depends on the item and where I find it. A liscence or wallet of course I will. I try and share with co-workers especially if they share with me without a second thought, but if they don't share I don't either.

I do well by my friends. Everyone else, I'm polite but won't go completely out of my way for them, unless it's a special situation.

To me work ethic means doing the job you were hired to do...

NOTHING drives me more crazy than to go to a restaurant or a fast food place and get terrible service.... NEWS FLASH it is NOT a difficult job... if you can't take my order and be pleasant and get me my meal in a timely fashion.... you should be fired.

I just dont' understand it... I have worked in fast food etc... and bad service was NEVER tolerated. EVER. I don't understand why so many people get away with such poor customer service around here. if you can't do your job the way it is supposed to be done.... you should be fired... PERIOD

AMEN Sparks...I think that if everyone in this country worked food service, retail and...I forget what the other one should be...we'd all have a better understanding and patience for the people/jobs.

I agree...

I have worked in food service and retail and I have a TON of patience for people in those fields... but when it becomes blatant laziness... Oh MAN that drives me nuts....

Like I saw a MANAGER at burger King one time... a lady was getting her meal and the manager bagged it and the lady said (in a pollite tone... not accusing at all) "OH that was supposed to be for here" and the MANAGER... the MANAGER said in an almost yelling tone..."Well it SAYS TO GO." and basically threw the bag onto the counter at the lady.... Brian had to send me away to go sit down at our seat becuase I was about to blow a fuse lol. There is absolute NO reason for a MANAGER to behave like that... if he hadn't sent me away (probably out of fear I would have gotten our food spit in lol) I would have told that manager exactly what I thought of her lol... not to mention just before that this manager totally embarrassed one of her employees in from of all the other employees and the customers... there is NO reason for that.

AHHH drives me crazy lol.

I feel bad for the "peons" in food service... they really get the bum deal... although I don't feel sorry for the lazy ones who don't do their job... but the ones that do and get trampled on... oh it lights a fuse in me lol

Oh I hear you! I try to be as patient and understanding as possible, but when you obviously screw up and don't care...that really gets to me. I will never eat at a particular Burger King again after the stupidity I ran into the last time I was there.

The problem IS that most people working fast food are there for a reason. Either they are teens just starting out and need to learn how to handle it, OR they are people who just didn't make good choices. Either way, it doesn't normally make for good customer service reps ;)

There are few who actually do a great job, like what they do, and please the customer first and foremost............and then there are customers who can't be pleased no matter what you do. After you have had one too many of those you really stop caring about TRYING to please.

(My son is working at Burger King right now........I hear his horror stories and just feel for him daily)

I am one of those people who take a job and want to do my very best at it. Doesn't matter if it's shoveling pooh or chasing kids around the playground. If I agreed to do it for the price you offered, it will be done to the best of my abilities...........my 'name' is on it and that matters to me. MORE people need to feel this way.

I am very lazy. But getting me doing something I love and I will do it happily.

Saying that, I always do what is needed of me, and have never had anything but a glowing reference :) And I have worked in a LOT of jobs in my time.... Jack of all, master of none.
