Um, hi. There's lots and lots of info on raw vs. kibble feeding on this board already, and it isn't a rehashed article. :)

Yea - maybe someone should write an article on "Why you should learn more about the message board you're a member of before posting ". :p

Many of us feed raw here! Even those that don't usually feed some very good kibble :D

Very good example about why someone should at least do a quick "search" before spewing off on a topic.

Lots of raw feeders here on the forum, and lots of available advice. Much of what you posted I completely disagree with, I'd like to know where you got a lot of this from...

Nope me either. I do VERY minimal veggies. And when I do (like once a month or so) it often includes broccoli, no gas problems with any of the hoard lol. And NEVER grains. Why go raw if you are going to feed all sorts of plant matter? But what ever, its still better than the average kibble.

But it is nice to see someone pushing raw, even if its not how most of us feed, vs coming on and going OMG SD is the best EVAR.

Just trying to help. I was looking through a bunch of article packs I had to do some research on raw food and I liked what this one had to say. I think it makes a lot of sense. No need to get hostile. I learned something from it.

I don't think people are getting hostile. It just seems very counterproductive to do a raw diet and then have half the diet be grains. There are lots of raw feeders here so if you have questions about how different people do raw then ask away! :)

I agree to an extent, but it seems like the veggies will provide a lot of great nutrients. I think this sounds very well rounded. I think it's more in terms of raw food in general, not just raw meat.

It also states that veggies like Kale have lots of healing properties. I've seen other raw diet recipes, and this one seems great. It seems like it's got everything the dog needs to really feel great.

In addition to the proper nutrients, I'm thinking of these ingredients in terms of being good for his coat and teeth as well. I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

Nope, this one is not great. I see nothing about the importance of bones and organs in this. It blah blahs along about veggies which is not something that is integral to the dogs daily needs

I noticed that too, when talking about meat it only mentions ground turkey... that leaves a LOT of the equation out.

azpoochluvr, this article appeals to what people *think* dogs should have in their diet, but the diet described is far from what a dog actually needs. In fact, for adding so much that the dog does NOT need, they left out some very vital factors to any raw diet. Where is the calcium coming from? They claim carrots!? That in itself is a reason to disregard the article.

While dogs might benefit from some veggies, (it's hotly debated) they certainly don't need grain, and the proportions in this "recipe" are nonsense. Most experts in raw diets say that a dog needs no more than 15% vegetable matter, IF they are to be included at all.

Also, recommending to feed the amount you currently feed in kibble? How very vague. Everyone who's done any reading on raw knows the golden rule is 2-3% of your dogs body weight in food a day. What if they were feeding garbage kibble that required them to feed their 60lb dog 4-5 cups of kibble? Feeding that much fresh, raw food would lead to diarrhea due to over feeding!

Basically, what we're all saying is that if you're looking for resources on raw feeding, this article isn't a good one.

Yes this article does not reflect the normal practises (such as they are) for raw feeding. I try to follow the prey model as much as I can (and importantly wild prey, which is much leaner and lower in muscle meat than domestic animals.)

No grains. Minimal veggies. They do get green tripe (great source of digestible plant bits) and kelp meal occasionally sprinkled on. They do get lots of raw meaty bones such as chicken necks, chicken backs, elk ribs, pork and beef neck etc. We now have a source for chicken livers and hearts, horray! I know breeders who have been feeding this way for long before it became mainstream.

But yes this article is about what will sound good to people vs what is actually needed by the dog. You won't kill your dog feeding like this, but you aren't really doing your dog a huge improvement over average/good kibble. Personally I would feed orijen before this raw diet as it has less filler and more meat.

I think the veggies appeal to most people just because that's what would make sense based on our own diets. But dogs are carnivores and require diets of at least mostly meat. I do occasionally give veggies but there's really no need. I have never seen an article about a raw diet recommending so much of the diet be veggies.

The golden rule on raw diets is about 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ.

I give veggies mainly because they' get so little of the raw if i didn't. Pugs gain weight just looking at food. The veggies don't contribute to the weight gain so i use it to bulk it up a bit.

But they only get them at 1 meal a day.

my dogs get veggies, cause the little shits eat our asparagus before we pick it :) and they eat raspberries off the bushes, thorns be damned, and scavange mulberries off the ground and low lying branches. But I don't usually purposefully give them to them. Except for the asparagus that gets "woody" and some left over veggies our ours occasionally.

anyone else's dogs go crazy over asparagus?? I find it pretty funny myself.

mine don't like many veggies at all. They'll eat cooked ones but raw ones they won't hardly touch.

But *I* love asparagus.
