I'm curious . . . I've seen kibble made out of every type of meat I can imagine (kangaroo, pheasant) . . . but never pork kibble. Why?

I can't imagine trichonosis could survive the kibbling or canning process.
And my dogs certainly love pork neck bones and digest them with no problem. I wonder. you would think they would try pork before duck or venison.

Back to Basics does have a formula with pork. I believe a couple of others use pork in kibble as well, but, can't remember off the top of my head.

By Nature does have a pork and sweet potato dinner pouch for dogs.

I'm wondering if it's a marketing thing. "Duck and green peas" kibble probably sounds a lot more appealing to owners than "Pork and beans". :lol-sign:

I'd take the pork and beans! :)

We feed raw pork as a staple to our crew, we get good prices on pork shoulders by the case.

I think you could market it no problem. "Cowboy pork and beans for canines" something like that.

Interesting. I've been feeding their fish formula, which is probably why I didn't notice the pork . . . but . . . if pork is so good . . .why is Eagle the only company that uses it? I don't doubt that it is good . . . but do you think there's a cultural think going on . . . ? Or some other reason. . . considering how much pork Americans eat, it seems really strange that it is not in more pet foods.

Maybe it's one of those situations where so much of the pork is consumed by humans, it would be more difficult to make enough available, cost effectively, to the dog food industry. Think about pickled pigs feet, etc. And we do see a lot of pork necks and such in the grocery stores. Think about all the different things that are made from pork such as sausages, bacon, etc. where the not so prime cuts are used.

Just speculation, but, who knows.

By Nature has a pork and sweet potato kibble as well. I really like the results I've seen with it; it's in my rotation for my dogs.

Pork Meal
http://www.naturapet.com/tools/ingredient.asp?stype=txtSearch&SearchStr=Pork&id=144

Pork meal is the dry rendered (cooked down) product from a combination of clean flesh and skin (with or without accompanying bone), derived from the parts of whole carcasses of pigs or a combination thereof -- exclusive of head, feet or entrails.

In general, pork is an approved ingredient but there are palatability issues with pork as compared to other meats. It is difficult to make a highly palatable pet food using pork without adding flavor enhancers. Another problem is that there is an inadequate supply of pork meal that is free from by-products.

One word of caution: You should know that problems could arise when cured pork is fed regularly (e.g. bacon). It is high in salt, sugar and sodium nitrite (which has been linked to stomach cancer). All of these substances in high concentrations are unhealthy, and dogs are particularly sensitive to nitrites, which can cause severe reactions in susceptible dogs.

And there's our answer!
