why do dogs have to be unconcious to be sterilized? we never did for calves & shoats to be steered or barred. heck we even did it to grown wild boars in spring & summer so they would be better eating in the fall (back before the hog population exploded). i know old timers that did their own dogs and didn't knock them out first just tied them up good.
Probably because I care if my dog is in pain or not and would do what I could to prevent unecessary pain...

I considered the option for Bandit but in the end just got him neutered. I wouldn't be pleased had a vet told me it was simply silly. That would make me feel like they thought of me as a small child and even then I'd hope no one would respond to a child asking a question that way.

They partially knock out horses. When my friends colt was gelded the vet did it in the indoor arena. She gave a shot to knock him down and a shot to knock him out--not actual anesthetic though, and did right there. She said that her BF was a small animal vet and thought it was barbaric that they didn't geld horses in an operating room like dogs....BUT they didn't do it without any kind of meds-that seems unnecessarily cruel to me....
