Layla is our new rescue dog. she is repeatedly peeing on my other dog's nylon rope. she goes outside usually but when she does go inside, it is on this rope. different places, same rope. she also peed on louie's blanket once and her own towel once. so far she has not peed on the floor, just on these things. when she pees on the rope there is no blanket or towel in the room. she was rescued from a place where she was tied in one spot. my wife thinks she was tied with the same type of rope, but we have no basis for that.

Does anyone know why she is doing this?

It could be because she was tied to a similar rope, or it could be because she was kept in a cage for a long time and learned that peeing/pottying on top of something (like a toy) kept her floor space clean and try (I have absolutely no scientific basis for this theory, but a few dogs I've known that have been kept in cages for extended periods of time have gone to the bathroom ON something, be it a bag of trash, pile of rocks, bush, or their own toys.

I'd wash the toys in nature's miracle or something, and just continue housebreaking her as usual. If she's not going on toys outside, and she learns not to go inside, it won't be a big deal. If you're crate training, keep her crate empty, sometimes it's hard to crate train a dog that has already HAD to go potty in a crate.

She may actually have a bladder problem, dogs usually try to be clean where possible so she perhaps thinks that by urinating on the toys it's better than going on the floor and in his own little mind he thinks it is ok.
