so here is the thing i got into a big ol discussion with a neighbor of mine, and she wanted to know why i have so many pets? the answer seemed pretty easy, because i love pets, i love their company, personality, attitude etc, but to her it was like " well, why?" they can't talk! YOU have to clean up after them etc blah blah, so, she thinks the reason i have pets is because i want to collect them?!? WTH... i mean i grew up with pets, i raised pups, cats, birds, fish, and so on. i just love being around pets. i do not look at them like animals per say, but, as a creature that needs to be loved, paid attention too and cared for. some people think that i am weird because i talk to my pets, i cuddle with my pups, and have conversations with my babies. ( all of them) they all have names, they all have their own things ( toys blankets,) so, am i crazy for having my pets??
i want to know that i am not the only one who feels having a pet is more than just a dog, cat, bird kinda a thing. it is more about companionship and loyalty and love ( giving and receiving)... so, who is with me or against me?
what was it that made you decide to have a dog, cat, bird or whatever? did you just say i want one? or was it more like going out there to pick a soul mate kinda thing ( like some of you have said before your pups are more like your soulmates)
did you base your decision on looks? character, personality? what was it that attracted you to your companion?
i know with me when i decided to get Thunder it was a number of things, i wanted to get him because he was cute, cuddly and very friendly at first, then after about a week he became my best friend. he would rely on me to do things with him and for him. Cinni was easy too, she was just so princessy like and delicate, she loves to be loved, and when you yell at her you cant be mad for more than a second.
with my turtles ( mikey, ralphy, baby "T", Spunky), that was more of a childhood thing for my hubby ( his turtle escaped from the backyard and was never found again) so, by bringing them in was more of a comfort thing, but, we still love them the same.
the newest additions were:
1 lovebird (peppermint), we wanted to get her to liven things up a bit, to add to the sound of the home with her chirping and lovely colors and she has just been the best since got her just over a week ago.
the other turtle ( captain Jack Sparrow) we got was more or less a rescue, we felt bad that they had him in such horrible living conditions ( less than a 1/4 water in his tank, no real light source, really no where for him to get out and bask) so we saved him and i am sure glad we did .
the 3 dwarf hamsters ( jasmine, cinderella, snow white) again were rescued from 3 guys who had no idea how to care for them, they had them in a tall fish tank with a bottle taped to the side of it and a wheel, they were in really great care and we felt that we wanted to add something that my son could care for hands on ( minus the dogs of course) something that was small and delicate. and since yesterday they have been really good for him, he loves to hear them sqeek and carry on. he got emotional when they started to have a hamster war, and i explained that it was ok, they are not hurting anyone.
sorry for the long post, my heart just seems to be in the right place, and i feel that every animal i have is more than 'just some pest to care for' or ' just another mouth to feed'
so what are you thoughts, imputs and suggestions on this topic, please share your story as how you ended up with your bundle of joy .
