so here is the thing i got into a big ol discussion with a neighbor of mine, and she wanted to know why i have so many pets? the answer seemed pretty easy, because i love pets, i love their company, personality, attitude etc, but to her it was like " well, why?" they can't talk! YOU have to clean up after them etc blah blah, so, she thinks the reason i have pets is because i want to collect them?!? WTH... i mean i grew up with pets, i raised pups, cats, birds, fish, and so on. i just love being around pets. i do not look at them like animals per say, but, as a creature that needs to be loved, paid attention too and cared for. some people think that i am weird because i talk to my pets, i cuddle with my pups, and have conversations with my babies. ( all of them) they all have names, they all have their own things ( toys blankets,) so, am i crazy for having my pets??

i want to know that i am not the only one who feels having a pet is more than just a dog, cat, bird kinda a thing. it is more about companionship and loyalty and love ( giving and receiving)... so, who is with me or against me?

what was it that made you decide to have a dog, cat, bird or whatever? did you just say i want one? or was it more like going out there to pick a soul mate kinda thing ( like some of you have said before your pups are more like your soulmates)

did you base your decision on looks? character, personality? what was it that attracted you to your companion?

i know with me when i decided to get Thunder it was a number of things, i wanted to get him because he was cute, cuddly and very friendly at first, then after about a week he became my best friend. he would rely on me to do things with him and for him. Cinni was easy too, she was just so princessy like and delicate, she loves to be loved, and when you yell at her you cant be mad for more than a second.

with my turtles ( mikey, ralphy, baby "T", Spunky), that was more of a childhood thing for my hubby ( his turtle escaped from the backyard and was never found again) so, by bringing them in was more of a comfort thing, but, we still love them the same.

the newest additions were:

1 lovebird (peppermint), we wanted to get her to liven things up a bit, to add to the sound of the home with her chirping and lovely colors and she has just been the best since got her just over a week ago.

the other turtle ( captain Jack Sparrow) we got was more or less a rescue, we felt bad that they had him in such horrible living conditions ( less than a 1/4 water in his tank, no real light source, really no where for him to get out and bask) so we saved him and i am sure glad we did .

the 3 dwarf hamsters ( jasmine, cinderella, snow white) again were rescued from 3 guys who had no idea how to care for them, they had them in a tall fish tank with a bottle taped to the side of it and a wheel, they were in really great care and we felt that we wanted to add something that my son could care for hands on ( minus the dogs of course) something that was small and delicate. and since yesterday they have been really good for him, he loves to hear them sqeek and carry on. he got emotional when they started to have a hamster war, and i explained that it was ok, they are not hurting anyone.

sorry for the long post, my heart just seems to be in the right place, and i feel that every animal i have is more than 'just some pest to care for' or ' just another mouth to feed'

so what are you thoughts, imputs and suggestions on this topic, please share your story as how you ended up with your bundle of joy :).

There's a dog quote that sums up how I feel:
"My dogs are not my whole life, but they make my life whole."

That's why.

I have dogs because I love having an active companion. I have rats because they are the only pocket pet that I have ever been able to bond with. I have a horse because I was raised with them (plus my mom still pays for him so he is really hers I just do all the work with him. I have a cat because.... well I actually have no clue on that one. I love my cat dearly but cats aren't my thing. I just feel like cats need homes and hell if I can give one a home and properly provide for it why not? So that is why I have my cat.

I grew up with pets. To me a home is not a home with some fur/fethers/fishtanks around. I have known no other way. Growing up we always had 3 dogs in the house, birds flying around, small animals in cages (such as hamster/rats/mice) rabbits running around and some fish tank full of somthing fish/turtles/lizards. And we still have a house full of animals. I am so glad I was able to grow up this way. I adore the companionsip I get from my pets. Although I can say i dont have a great connection witht he smaller critters like I have with my dog. I live with the smaller critters but I couldnt live with out a dog around. I always feel bad for people I know who were never allowed a pet growing up. I have animals becuase i enjoy having them. I love having a dog to go hiking/camping/swimming with, or just stting in and watching TV.

I too grew up with pets. Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and hamsters. I can't imagine my life without any animals in it. My dogs keep me grounded, and have helped me through the darkest of times, something a person couldn't do. They need me and I need them just as much. They are my comic relief and my ray of sunshine in a cloudy day.

My golden I got because my exhubby wanted a purebred golden and refused to get one from a shelter. I got him because he was the cutest and chubbiest pup in the litter, one little kiss from him and I was his. My dane x, I got from the shelter, he was dropped at the shelter with his brother when he was 7wks. He just had that look in his eyes, of nothing but innocence, trust and love. He was mine from the minute scooped him up. My shepherd was my mom's, when she passed I took her. She has so much trust in me she never bonded with any one, even my mom. I had her for a few days after mom passed and she had more of a bond with than she had ever had with any one. I just couldn't break that trust she had in me and send to another home to learn to trust again.

heh. that is, quite literally, why i got my first cat, skorch.

the rest of them not so much. companionship, because i enjoy taking care of them, because they help fill my lonely house, because i enjoy dog training and dog playing, because they needed homes. lots of reasons.

I love that quote. ;)

I did, too, grow up with dogs. I come from a huge animal-loving family (My dad's side of the family).

what was it that made you decide to have a dog, cat, bird or whatever?
I'd been wanting a dog of my own for a lonnnnnng time, then my parents finally gave in at 11 years old.

did you just say i want one? or was it more like going out there to pick a soul mate kinda thing ( like some of you have said before your pups are more like your soulmates)
See above, lol.

did you base your decision on looks? character, personality? what was it that attracted you to your companion?
Sadly, looks. I'll never do that again, though.
