As the title says "Why did you name your dog the name you did"? I know we have had a thread about this in the past but oh well.

Maggie May I named after one of my favorite songs :). And it really fits her I think.

Dozer was given that name simply because we knew he was going to be HUGE. And when he was a little puppy he had a big obsession with rocks  .

Tucker is named after two books "The Trouble With Tuck" and "Tuck Everlasting". It fits him too I think.

And just for the heck of it

Freddie Mercury my Betta fish was obviously named after the lead singer of queen. I really thought it was the PERFECT name for a Betta ;) .

Oh Lord, I was going to name squirt something normal, like Norma, and my daughter came up with Squirt, and it just stuck. My cat is Mr. Houston, but he came with that, and the dog I named, is Jessica Beans.

Phoebe was called Gazelle at the humane society.........I guess she jumped a few barriers in an escape attempt, LOL...But to us she just didn't look like a "Gazelle" and the kids were torn between Phoebe and Freckles.......I think they made the right choice :D

Orson is a character in a set of Dean Koontz books that I enjoyed. NOT to be confused with Orson Wells, LOL..........In the books Orson is a genetically engineered dog (Lab I believe) that is super smart, and loyal!
(Orson should be glad he isn't a cat, the cat in the book was named Mungojeerie, LOL)

Meg's name was originally "Spice". She didn't know it at all, and I hated it. So, sticking with the theme and her color, she became Nutmeg, and then Meggie, and now Meg.

We always name our animals 'human' names... Madison and Rylie were 2 of my favorite names. Chloe's breeder started calling her Chloe from a young age... when I got her at 10 weeks old, I couldn't think of anything I liked better ;)

Okay so... Nikki was named Nikki because I liked that name. LOL good reason, huh?

Trey came named. I think Trey's probably the MOST un-doggy name ever. I really don't like the name, but hey, it's been his name his whole life.

Beau was named by my mother NOT after his father who is also Beau. So he's technically Beau Jr.

Rose came named as well. I think it is quite fitting for her though. It's also weird because what happened with Harry was identical to what happened to my first dog, Rosie, which is a similar name. I was the exact same age as Josie when it happened and Rosie was still a puppy. It is almost like it's come full circle or something.

Maddie is named after Cybil's character Maddolyn aka Maddie on Moonlighting

the shows were rerunning on USA when I got her as a puppy... I was pretty much obsessed with it, and the name fit her really well

Missy was already named when I got her from the pound, and she knew her name
Charlie, too

Bluedawg-because he looked sad in the first picture I saw of him.

Perro Verde-kinda a color theme going with the Bluedawg. Plus it was the first one out the list of
Chaz suggestions she responded too. So I guess you could say Smkie named her, it was her recomendation.

I got Lillian in Dec 2005 from the rescue organization I work with – she was so queen-like and sure of herself, and she was so gorgeous. Lillian was the first name that came to mind.

I got Pepe in March 2005 from my rescue – I didn’t name him, the rescue director did, because he was so “peppy” (which is how it’s pronounced).

I got Flicka from a GR rescue about a year ago, and they named her Lilly. I couldn’t have a Lilly and a Lillian, so I changed it to Flicka – from “My Friend Flicka”.

Let's see... my dad actually came up with "Ilsa" - I had a name all picked out for her (Cairo) but when I saw her in person, Cairo just didn't fit. She looked like a big pudgy Frau dog, so we started thinking of German names that didn't sound too stereotypical. I mentioned that I liked the ring of "Elsa" but it was too common, and my dad suggested "Ilsa" - like the female lead in one of the Indiana Jones movies... and it stuck!

Ronin was origianlyl named Hugh. I didn't really like the name and I wanted him to start out his new life with a new name. I got him on the 4th of July, so I wanted to name him "Roman", as in Roman Candle. But, at the time, Rumor was living with me... and I couldn't have a Roman and a Rumor... too similar. So, I settled for Ronin. I really like the name, it's very strong. Ronin almost ended up being a Basko or a Jarko!

I already have names for my future cats picked out... Jacques Louis David and Pierre Eugene du Semitiere. Both are crazy long awesome names of artists. Teehee!

I have guidelines that I use to name my dogs .. *L* .. it works for ME, anyhow.

First, the names need to start with a D, K or T sound (C, Q will work too - hard consonant sound). Then they need to be one or two syllables at most. After that, they need to be names you don't typically hear .. I like them to be different but not weirdly different.

Dawson, Kylee, Trick, Dora, Tori and Khana were all named by me. Lady came to me as Lady and since I was dating the guy who used to own her I left her name alone (although it was NOT what I wanted to call her and she was NO lady! *L*).

Dawson was just registered as Dawson (UD) (ILP'd GSD).
Kylee is registered as Kylee Cub (CDX NA NAJ) (ILP'd Chow).
Trick is Hawks Hunt's Tricky Saxon (CD RE NJP NAP)(GSD).
Dora is Eldorado's The Midnight Sun (NA NAJ) - she was 14 months old when I got her, originally called "Sunni" (she's BLACK) and I pulled Dora out of her name instead. (Chow)
Tori is Viktori vom Zwilling Bach (GSD)
Khana is Clos de Lion Red Hot Khana (RA) (Chow)

It's hard enough choosing call names, registered names are a pain in the butt sometimes!

i let my mom name VIctor because she is our grammy doggy sitter and i thought since he was so impossible maybe it would help her like him more (plus she was determined to come up with the right name)..so Victor was vigorous Victor for quite a while. Mary was named after a little girl that i babysat and thought the world of.

Spider - It was a halloween themed litter, and her papered name didnt have much space left after both kennel names were added ( since it was a co/breeding) so I needed something short & halloween-ish, and Spider was the best I could do. LOL

Naughty - The litter theme was "designer" so we went with Nautica, and Naughty just seemed to fit. And I kick myself everytime, because she has DEF. lived up to her name.

Kodak- I was watching tv and a old Kodak Film commerical came on ( hadn't seen one on in forever) & just loved it. The registered name came after the call name in this situation ( Picture Perfect)

Shooter- She was only 1 of 2 puppies, and it was a "cabo wabo" theme. She is Desmolin's Cabo Wabo Shooter & her sister is Desmolins Cabo Wabo Stinger.

Pearl- She just LOOKS like a Pearl. She has that "huh" look most of the time, and pulls Pearl off great. I originally wanted to name her Fergie, but had to come to a aggreement with my mother, and Pearl Jam it was.
