I can sit back and hate "bad" people, but if my genetics and enviroment were the same, I would be one.
There are an awful lot of good people who came up with bad circumstances. I agree that poverty and personality (ie, genetics) have a lot to do with crime, but the element of choice is inescapable.

Re: juries, I have to say I think the popular characterization of jurors as the fish too dumb to swim off the hook is ridiculous. I've done jury duty, and it was damned hard to get out of it. The judge turned down everyone who tried to pull the 'I'm too important for this" routine, and most of the medical excuses. Then he chewed them out for wasting his time. It was funny and intimidating at the same time. I personally enjoyed jury duty - not so much in the actual activities, but in the sense that, well, it's one of the few things we're actually asked to do as a citizen. Pay taxes, vote and sentence our fellow man to prison. That's it. If you were Israeli, you'd be expected to serve in the military. I think we have a pretty good deal here.

I've had to help pick juries in enough cases that I lost count long ago . . . The ones who are important enough to get out of it have already been excused before voir dire.

That's part of the problem - the viewpoint that that is what you're on the jury to do . . . I hope that was meant to be humorous!

Did the officer involved have a revolver? Or cops carry Glocks, so here the count would have been 10 shots or more.

The worst part is Mom making excuses for her poor Baby.

"Officers had options other than shooting her son, she said."

They tried to. They sent the Dog after him first.

"Daphne said she tried to persuade Kirk not to leave his halfway house but he didn't listen."

Seems to be a pattern here. He's told all kinds of things in life: "Don't rob people, don't do drugs, don't assault people with weapons, Stop! Police!" But "he didn't listen".

If he had listened to any of those solid recomendations, he wouldn't be on life support right now. But to quote Strother Martin in "Cool Hand Luke": "Some men you just can't reach".

Thank God the Dog is going to be OK.
