you to be gentle with animals as a small child? my mom is so critical of Hyia, saying she is to ruff..that she WILL NOT LEAVE the dog alone..and so on. She says MY children never acted this way..as if there is something deep down wrong with Hyia. I have thought hard on this and then oh yeah...it was the cat. WE got a siamese when i was almost 4. My father was going to take that cat to the woods more then one time with a visit to a hammer for what she did to me. SHe scratched my face more times..up the nose once, even inside the mouth..i think i tried to put my arms around her when i said hello and she nailed me right then. She always went for the eyes. I would cry so hard my father would relent, and somehow i came out with my vision intact. She taught me to be gentle indeed, and she died 18 years later in my arms while i felt my heart break apart. She was the queen of all..she ruled..doors opened not because a human assisted her, but because she willed it to open. I was wondering how other people became the way they are..and if there is an animal back there that taught you too. When i said Pheobe taught me mom, and she said oh! yes she did.. I hope this makes her a bit more patient with Hyia..she gets timed out everytime shaffy roars. Shaffer doens't want to be messed with, he adores mom and wants Hyia to leave him alone so he roars if she tries to hug him or play with him..She spent the night last night with Victor who is on the same wavelength as she is. She giggled most of the night and his tail was wagging right along..she never hurt him, or made him say ouch...i told her as long as the tail is going it is fine with me. I am glad she and Vic have made a bond. Mary is too old and doesn't want to play like that. She should have this experience and it is good for Victor too.

I honestly don't know who taught me to be gentle with animals. I know it's not my parents, as they are strict on raising our pets. I think it just came naturally to me to just spoil them rotten. The first pet my family ever owned, was a dog when I was like.. 4 or 5. I can't remmeber ever teasing the dog or hitting him like how my nephew does to my puppy these days. As far as I remember, I've always been gentle with animals and my pets, which probably helps because I love them oh so much =).
I've even been known, among my family members and closest friends, as the 'dog/cat lover', as I don't really have experience with any other animals.

A mutt named Buddy, would take so much abuse from me when I was 3. Then I actually grew a heart :D (my parents say I was EVIL when I was 3) I loved him... He lived a long 10 years with my grandpa and grandma. I felt so bad when he died, I got upset because when he died in the morning (5:00) everybody knew except for me... My parents said he died from heart failure... He is and always will be the most nicest, loving, patient (and my fav.) dog. Sadly, I'm slowly forgetting how he looks like... *sigh*

Since my house was always crowded with dogs when I was little, I guess I just learned naturally. If not, I'm pretty sure it was my dad who taught me.

My mom. We had cats and I remember her showing us how to pet them with the hair not against it. And when friends visited and did it backwards I thought they were so rude.

It didn't go over very well the day we vacuumed the cat!

Rocky

he is the dog who taught me to have compassion for animals I always had a tendincy to be gentle afterall I grew up on a farm with a kennel full of Australian Shepherd, ACD's, And Dobies but I never really had a "connection" wih an animal until I got Rocky he just taught me that there is more to an animal than its "self" (if you know what I mean) I always loved animals and grew up and went to school to become a vet tech but after the experiences with Rocky I now know that there is more to a dogs soul than meets the eye

I'm pretty sure it was my mom. (And my dad too.) She would let us know if we were being to rough with the animals.

Ever since I was a lil tot I'd go to work with my dad (he's sorta a vet) and I learned really early to be nice with the animals so as not to spook them. I remember scaring a farmer 1/2 to death when I wandered into a pen with a mother cow and her 2day old calf. He was positive she was going to kill me for being too close but she didn't even flinch! She just watched me as I carefully waked up to her and started rubbing her all over and then moved on to the calf (this was a beef cow who is semi-feral due to living most her life out in pasture except for when it's calving season)

We had a cockerspaniel when I was littlebitty. A old man next door taught him tricks and taught us kindness.
We moved to a farm when I was 4 and from there continued to get lessons. We helped dad try to save a baby lamb, bottle fed him in our basement. He made it and became a great friend to us kids. From there we tried to tame every animal on the farm. We had a cow we tamed and rode, we caught 3 young racoons with the intentions of taming (dad stopped that one). We adopted a horse that had been abused. We was always getting kicked or bucked. We had to give her to my cousin who was great with horses, let him work with her. That broke our hearts but we knew it was best for her. Had my feet stepped on by cows, chased by bulls. Since dad could never keep us away from the animals, he and my grandpa just taught us things as we went. And since they didnt trust us to pay attention, bulls went to grandpas.
We grew up to have great respect for animals of all kinds.

My parents (mostly my Mom) and older sister.....we got Colby when I was very young, so they taught me how to be gentle with her and treat her well.

I don't think anyone ever "taught" me, per se. When I was two my Dad rescued a puppy out of the street and brought it home. It turned out that I was the only person Copper would have anything to do with . . . I've always felt that animals communicated much more clearly than people - as long as you want to listen.
