honestly...I just leave it at what it is unless I suspect there will be pet damage. Lucky for me, I have been fortunate enough to have no pet damage issues and I only have 1 dog and 1 cat. My 3 ferrets have their own bedroom with a huge play pen. The landlord only knows about Aero ;p But I don't live in an apartment anymore (thank goodness) I'm in a 2 story duplex with a nice big yard! Literally right across the street from Jes (myhorsemyrules) actually ;)

Well with Logan I just kind of got him, and said "Look, I have another dog." And he was like "oh, okay then." :rofl1:

Granted I don't think that'd work most of the time. And said landlord was also like "Look, I found a creepy guy from Craigslist to live on your couch" so then I was like "Oh. Then I'm out and you can keep said broken couch, too." Sooooo...yeah lol

One of my old landlords was pretty good about it. He wasn't thrilled to have dogs in the house at all, but he met mine and saw they were well-behaved. So when I found Tempie, I took her to him and showed him the condition she was in and said I needed to keep her for a little while (*snort*) to get her fixed up and ready for a home. Then later, when I finally decided to admit I could never get rid of her, I took her to meet him again and showed him where she was in her training, and he was like, "Well, we've had her this long..." :p

After that, I moved into the city. And my landlords know about Tempie, and that's all. But that's because here in the city, good freaking luck finding a landlord that will even take the time to meet them before making a decision. They read the little application and say, "Three dogs? Denied." And that's that.

That's my experience as well.

Finding a place with two was HARD. 1 22-lb, 1 47-lb dog. CGCs, crate trained, obedience trained (no competition at that point). You'd have thought I was asking to rent with a Bengal tiger. Finally found a house to rent...what a relief. Added Mira after we'd lived there about a year...basically they didn't care at that point...since nothing had been destroyed, I guess they figured we were okay.

Bought a house after that so no longer an issue (area with no dog limit). Then moved unexpectedly...trying to find a place to rent with 3 dogs (55lb, 47lb, 22lb)?? Yeah, right, not around here. Only possibilities were overly expensive houses in areas with very high violent crime rates (yet cost more than a similarly small house in a decent area). Ended up living with family (thank goodness for that option) for several months while we sold the old so we could buy new.

Renting with three dogs is one of those things where it may very well work in your current situation but if you have to move suddenly, it can really cause problems. There's a reason renters dump dogs when moving. So have a backup plan, especially if the third dog is going to be "big" (which in apartment terms seems to be anything over 25lbs).

I just prove to them that I'm a stellar animal owner and tenant; I have references, the dogs' certificates from training classes, vaccine & lisc info, my cats are indoor only. Even before my pit bull died, I had some awesome landlords who were willing to give us a chance (who then become new references). Never lie about anything, and if your animal messes something up, fix it, don't leave it for the landlord. When renting, I behave as if I'm a guest with special privileges, basically.

As far as getting a new pet, I just talk to them. I give them the reasons why I want to add an animal, I don't lie about how big it will be or anything, and I respectfully leave the decision up to them (it's their property). To date, I've not had anyone say 'no', and all four of my current pets were acquired while I was renting. I've even been allowed to have some fosters.

This, totally. Elsie weighs about 37 pounds right now, and I'm constantly being told that my dog is HUGE by people in public. I looked at apartments in my area, and of those that allow pets, the vast majority do not allow dogs over 25 pounds.

Move to NY ;) No, in all honestly, I don't know what it would be like living with 3 dogs here....but I'd say more than half the rentals here allow pets, and most of those don't have weight restrictions.

Does this have anything to do with the free chihuahua?

From what I hear other people say, having a titled dog really really helps. CGC is excellent, as are any completed training classes.

My landlord has already given me permission to get a second dog. When I brought Saga with me to look at the place, I took her on a half inch collar and a very thin leather leash. My landlord's response when I asked if I could get a second was "Well seeing how well behaved Saga is, yeah, you can get whatever you want." My landlord is pretty cool.
