I met three beautiful Whippets when I was out jogging today. They were so cute and the old man who owned them was such an interesting fellow. I realised I knew nothing about this breed. Someone educate me please?

(don't hate me if I spelt the breed name wrong)
:)

Whippets are sweet, intelligent, livly and a very devoted dog and clam in the home. They should NEVER be harshly trained for they are very sensitive, positive training works the BEST with them. They are an independent breed and you can never acheve perfect obedience although I'm sure its possible but just not part of the breed. They are good with kids and dont have much doggie odor. They are a good watch dog, and good with other dogs but will KILL cats and rodents :( Since they have a short coat they need to pretty much be an indoor dog and when it gets cold they should where a coat.

We had one that boarded with us. Very sweet, very gentle and very opinionated. When she wanted to go somewhere, she was going to go there. period. Always interesting when we brought her in from the yard. We never knew if she was going to go in her run or go wandering around the kennel.

Strider's obedience trainer uses her obedience trained whippet as a demo dog. He can jump a 6' fence, and return with a 5 lb. roast from off the neighbors grill (as in, jump back over his own fence, with said roast). :D He also fetches still warm, fully wrapped burger king burgers from who knows where....

I have whippets, they are the long haired version.. but the only difference is in the skin and hair.

They are not as fragile as they look.

Whippets are rowdy puppies, and this is coming from a JRT owner. They are very sweet dogs with gentle natures. I was at a LHW get together this winter. There were 18 dogs there, regular whippets, whippets of long haired descent (look like normal whippets but carry the LH gene) and LHW. Many were intact young males. They all got along and played together. This-as a JRT owner-floored me.

Whippets are very athletic dogs they can jump and wiggle-over/under fences. They can run like the wind. When it comes to training they are smart dogs but aren't going to work endlessly for you (well Bounce is a freak...) they will do a few repetitions then wander away or start to shut down. They tend to be very sensitive/soft so are easily shut down.

They get very attached to their owners and some are aloof with strangers. (once again Bounce is a freak she loves everyone)

That all I can think of at the moment.
