My 1 1/2 year old dog often makes high pitched whimpering sounds like a squeak toy.

For example, dinner time is 5:00. Beginning at around 3:30 he starts whimpering and continues until he's fed at 5:00. Another example, when guests come and he's told to go lay down in his bed, he will whimper until after they leave. Third, if I have to occasionally leave him home alone for a few hours he may then squeak/whimper for the rest of the day.

Mostly I just ignore it but I have to admit the prolonged whimpering is very stressful for me. I'm reassessing and considering making a tough decision. No health issues; it's behavioral. Any ideas?

I've had a couple of dogs that did this. Both were high drive, high energy intact males. I don't know if being intact was a part of it?

It seems to me that it's a way to release some of the stress in situations where there's no other outlet or when they really, really want something. Eagerly waiting for dinner or being asked to lay on a bed while people are visiting or being left home alone would certainly apply.

I'd suggest coming up with other outlets for him. Letting him interact with visitors - it can be a great training opportunity. Have him do some training for a snack before dinner. Give him an interactive toy when he's home alone.

Is he neutered?
